From the targa website:

The first stage of the rally however, spelt disaster for defending Competition Modern Champion Steve Jones and new co-driver Ben Searcy when their Nissan GTR 35 suffered engine failure at the end of the stage.

Jones, who was looking to be the first driver to win the event for the third time, and his crew are still looking at options for him to rejoin the rally for the start of stages tomorrow morning.

Can't vouch 100% for the accuracy of this but apparently the Jones GT-R dropped it's engine oil due to landing heavily after a jump on the first stage.

Motor sport can be fucking cruel sometimes.

26-08-2010, 09:48 PM
I saw some photos after the incident in mind, looks like he had a hard landing after one of the speedbumps on the course. I walked past him having a chat to someone (didn't go say hi & interrupt because I figured he had better things to do) and i heard "engine light came on, lost all power... and then there was a fire"

crappy blow to him, but as he said "thats racing"

obviously more accurate details will come out in the next few days and sorry if i've gotten anything wrong

Is that a fucking speed bump at 0.53???

yeah there was about 4 or 5 speed bumps through the course.
Also, every single cone you see in the video apart from the chicane i had to put up and then remove ! whos idea was this...

TJ
26-08-2010, 10:42 PM
So Steve's smashed down off one of those and probably ripped off/cracked the sump. Shite.

Brockas
26-08-2010, 10:43 PM
yeah there was about 4 or 5 speed bumps through the course.

Not just jumping on the bandwagon because of what has happened with Steve, but who's idea was it to run a stage with speedbumps??

Obviously if anyone wants to top the stage time they're going to have to hit it flat out. That can't be good for safety!

Lonewolf
26-08-2010, 10:51 PM
thats pretty fucking gay.
That said, all competitors have to put up with the same

jaybee
26-08-2010, 11:15 PM
i guess it introduces a new dimension, either go over them fast and risk damage to get ahead, or slow down to be safe and lose a few seconds - only reason i can think of as to why they would include speedbumps in the course, or perhaps they are newly installed bumps on the existing course? either way, i don't agree and think its a silly idea to include them, and dangerous as paul pointed out.

Rhys
27-08-2010, 12:14 AM
Unfortunately for steve the car will not be returning to racing tommorrow. The car didnt break due to becoming airborne. Seems its been a mechanical failure.

RK 86 WA
27-08-2010, 07:03 AM
What a shame :( Bad luck!

It is a bit odd to run a stage with speed humps but at the same time, to be fair, surely there would have been a sighting run/prior notification/prior drive throughs etc etc so it wouldn't have blindsided the drivers.

Having said that, I do agree with the general consensus about the humps.

DCEVO
27-08-2010, 07:37 AM
Speedhumps on a race circuit !! ?? WTF
Sure everyone has to drive over them but that cant be good for some of the much lower cars
Stupid idea IMO !!

[Jacek]
27-08-2010, 08:01 AM
its not a race circuit, its a carpark

read above, the engine fail was NOT due to the speedhump

And it's called Tarmac rallying. You deal with it. I don't agree with a stage with speed humps myself. But if that's what on offer you drive to suit.

Before you all jump on the criticize wagon, how many stages in not just targa tas but also the likes of wrest point, east coast and wa have competition stages with sharp crests.

Loads. And you drive them to suit your car, it's a prologue stage. Go over them slow enough so you avoid damage and make up the spots in competition. The affected time difference will be five fiths of fuck all in the competition world.

And he's already done back to back ;)

Brockas

were none of the drivers aware of the road conditions beforehand? did they not do any recon work at all?

Of course they all knew.

My only point is - to be the fastest you know that others are going to take it full tilt.

This means if you want to be at the top, you're going to have to take it as fast as you can, cause you can be assured there are others who will.
IMO that's not a great idea, but it doesn't look like it has claimed any victims (and those speed bumps are quite gradual) so it's not that big of an issue...

27-08-2010, 12:34 PM

today was great, sat at one of the hairpins during the early stage, just about every car had a decent line. the majority of the porsches and the r35's flew around and up the hill, the big heavy holdens had a hard time controlling the understeer - but man there were some impressive cars through the field.

once we arrived at the mundaring weir stage, we saw the hankook evo 10 parked up in a ditch, wedged on a tree stump. quite lucky that tree stump was there really, who knows where it would have ended up otherwise. after it all got cleared up and watched all of the field go through there, its quite easy to see what would have happened, with the road sweeping down and off to the right at the speed most of them are doing, would encourage the tail to get quite happy, especially if your heavy on the right foot and it slopes down - one silver r35 in particular (not pete major, the other one) was pointing at a tree at one point but luckily corrected it well. the sounds of the gt3 RS and pete's r35 in particular sounded unreal through the hills.

Was there for the 2rd time around, but was in a spot where I couldn't really see that part of it, did seem tricky though.

Was anyone at the hotel part, sounded like there was quite a bit of wheelspin there, couldn't see it though.

I was up at the hotel watching the racing when the Hankook Evo went in, the accident was bad enough but then the driver got out and was on the other side of a crashed vehicle that hadn't been stabilized with a pretty hefty drop off on that side. Rule #1 of road accident rescue don't touch the car unless it's stabilised that situation could have gotten a lot worse. Other than that it made for an awesome day watching some damn fine cars out for a run. Hopefuly a few more of us (myself included) can get out there next year.

FranZ
27-08-2010, 09:46 PM
Awesome day out today. Great weather, great roads.

Regarding the speed bumps: its part of the road and what a fantastic bit of road it is. There are only 3 speed bumps on the course, one near the start, one where everyone was getting air off - Jim Richards had a full foot of air under all four after hitting it flat out and it landed perfect. This year was a test to see if Whiteman Park are still happy after. If all is well and they use it next year, Targa West will try to have the bitumen speed bumps cut out and have removable metal ones installed instead so they can be removed.

Hope to see people out tomorrow at Zig Zags, Toodyay and Bullsbrook. If you're out there, please get a picture of me. Im in my Evo with 00 on the door cards; I'll be following the 000 cars checking the stage and will be the first through with a siren blaring. :)

YES. i saw you drive through twice, after commenting and saying i would love to have your job of doing that, i was trying to think why that evo looked so familiar! Now i know!

spectator car hit a tree from what i was told (was about 100 meters back from it), hence they cancelled the last few stages of the day, bit of a shame but i hope the drivers ok, must have been a big hit, they were saying it was going to be an hour till the road was cleared, and that was after waiting for about half an hour

Yes it is!!
I spoke to Dave about it last week. He said he was going to hit it "flat out" like it wasn't there.

Hope the spectator was alright, but from the sound of things a few stages are going ahead this evening. Does this mean they will be racing during dusk because that would be fucking dangerous up in the hills.

^^^^ FARK thats an epic shot in flight, i was a lil disapointed with the view points i could manage for the stages i saw today, darn trees in the middle of some good shots (thats a man blaming his tools a bit but still, i was hoping to get some better panning shots in.

I noticed on the targawest site that they did run the rest of the stages once the road opened, one of the officals told me that they were canning it till tomoz, apparently not, might have to go back out there to see some of the rest

What an up and down day... I think it was a local more than a spectator but alas, them crashing made things very difficult. He's lucky that Targa West had Paramedics on hand, I heard this evening that there are fair chances he wouldnt have made it if there hadn't of been.

Ended up moving rather briskly from the accident scene back to Toodyay down to Midland then back up to Bullsbrook to give Bullsbrook Long the green light. Heaps of spectators around there which was great to see, pity that it ran so late thanks to the temp closing of Julimar Road causing the last 15 or so cars going through as a transport as it became to dangerous to rally. Last three cars that went through at pace reported seeing alot of kangaroos. Thanks to the detour to Midland I only just cleared the stage with enough fuel. 20l jerry can into a 55l tank and the fuel gauge still only reads a quarter is bad. Big thanks to Todd and Turks for helping me out there!

6 stages in Toodyay tomorrow then the Perth city stage. Lets hope the weather holds off and makes the atmosphere on the foreshore a great one!

PS. Pete Majors 35 with a full exhaust sounds awesome; the crackle on overrun is awesome too! Love it!

Few from me for now... First time actually shooting the Targa West and even though I was only shooting for a few hours over the entire weekend, I still enjoyed myself. Will definitely do it's entirety next year!

Troy Wilson's Evo 7... this thing sounds insane... and he pulls off a few nice handbrake maneuvers at the end too!

Nice - that was a great looking Evo. The vinyl wrap was smart upon close inspection.
Not shy using the antilag either!

They were one of the few AWD cars that threw it around in the carpark - great to watch.

Troy Wilson's Evo 7... this thing sounds insane... and he pulls off a few nice handbrake maneuvers at the end too!

As far as I am aware that is the Evo 7 that Daryl Sosa built and then sold to Kevin Simonsen. I think Troy and Kevin are mates.

Dont know what motor is in it at the moment but it has had some monsters over time.

Uhhh, Troy Wilsons 7 came from LWR. Daryl Sosa ex 7 got sold to Kevin Simonsen. Mark Greenham now runs it at Barbagallo in Improved Production - not the same car Brendon!

pretty sure Trop Wilson's Evo is the one he has had for a long time - the red one he used to drive at no limits.. open the doors and you can see its the red one thats been repainted/wrapped

In other news, the car which we dad and I won Targa West 07 classic outright with has now won the event 3 times.

Once with us, then with Alister Mccrae and then this year it won again.

Good car that 1 ;)
