So, where can I get one? And why isn't the news talking about this?
Oil companies have more than likely paid the guy to keep his mouth shut, as it would reduce the world's dependence on freshly drilled oil.

Well one could think that, but the video was released by the United Nations University. Its probably more likely that the oil conglomerate is silencing it at the media end, and not his end. In the vid he's taken it all over the world, so i'd say that its not his fault the word isn't getting out.

What kind of solid residue does it leave in the machine?!?

Output figures
Plastic bottles - 70% oil 16% gases (CO2 and Methane) 6% solid waste (mostly carbon) 8% steam (water)
so 6% is left over as carbon residue. Its probably horribly toxic lol. But 6% of an already toxic bottle is better than 100% of it.

wow thats pretty impressive.
There are probably a lot of ideas and inventions like this. But they just never see the light of day

Possibly enough to hold an RB20 together?
Fucking cool idea.. but the oil companies will ensure it goes no where.

Here's a bit more information about it: http://ourworld.unu.edu/en/plastic-to-oil-fantastic/
The company makes the machines in various sizes and has 60 in place at farms, fisheries and small factories in Japan and several abroad.
Here is the company: http://www.blest.co.jp/
I wonder if Streeter will be able to send a few over? :P

How much energy does it use for the process though?

Not a whole lot, they quote ~2c/1L oil produced.
But everyone keeps bringing that up - the thing isn't trying to produce free energy, but rather improving on the current process of dealing with plastic. It can be pretty much guaranteed that it uses less energy to turn 'x' amount of plastic back into oil as compared to bringing that much oil over from Saudi Arabia, refining it into petrol, and shipping it to Japan.
Great concept.
So now are we facing a moral dilemma. Do we want to recycle our plastic waste for more plastic material or for oil to be used as fuel?

Activated carbon. My Grandfather reckons he built an old ford truck once after the war that ran from charcoal gas. He reckoned you just grabbed the coals from your fire and chuck it in the back and the thing went.
