I'm probably not going over the weekend so thought this would interest those heading up to the rally with their cameras.

Cheers

QUIT Targa West gives photographers the chance to win a new laptop

QUIT Targa West organisers in conjunction with Thinkin' IT are proud to launch a new photo website for all photographers, both professional and amateur, to display a selection of their photos of the 2010 event.

This exciting new innovation, the brain child of Keenan Haigh, General Manager of Thinkin' IT, will add another dimension to the already strong online presence of the event.

Photographers who display their photos on the site will be in the running to win a Toshiba Laptop valued at over $2000!

“The nature of rallying means the official event photographers can’t be everywhere and often some great images are taken by spectators along the course but are only displayed on personal Facebook pages or personal websites,” Haigh said.

“This website will provide photographers at all levels the opportunity to display their images of the event which will ultimately provide the best exposure of the event, the competitors and sponsors.

“It will also give amateur photographers the opportunity to get out there and start making a name for themselves in the industry,” Haigh said.

Uploaded photos will be judged by a panel of judges and the winner selected shortly after the event.

Visitors to the site wishing to purchase any of the photos on display will be directed to the contributing photographer to do so.

Photographers will also have their own profile page that will allow users to contact them should they want to learn more about a particular photographer.

Photographers heading out to QUIT Targa West should register their interest to have photos on this new site and send in a sample motorsport photo that could be used on the site in the meantime.

To register interest photographers are asked to contact Keenan@thinkinit.com.au

Looks to be a pretty forward thinking initiative should expand it to all WA motorsport.

What is a good lens to shoot such events that wont break the budget i read through all the photo threads and the Armin Ausejo link how too etc and tripod is essential over 200mm.
Would a 300 lens cut it or is something around 400mm a better investment?

What works and what doesnt.

All depends on where you are standing...

I had a good run with my 70-200L at the prac yesterday and it was more than sufficient!

tripod isn't essential over 200mm, i shot at AHG with a 100-400 hand held no worries!
not to mention they are going pretty quick, so you can use relatively quick shutter speeds.

both the 70-200L and 100-400L are expensive lenses... (2k+)

a 55-250 kit lens would do the job as long as you're not miles away.

Awesome idea! One central location to view snaps from 100's of togs is a smart move.

Pffft...too much focus on equipment!
I won a $7000 photo contest with a kit lens.
It will be more about capturing the right moment.

It is a good idea... but what are the terms and conditions on this?
Click through to their privacy policy (which is what is linked as T&C from their sign up form) and you get a summary of the event...
Which doesn't inspire confidence.

I was about to sign up then saw that they make the photographer's address public and aren't clear about the usage rights / ownership of submitted pics.

Potential free laptop or not, I want to know what my rights are. I'd rather post the pics up through flickr and here where I at least have some basic control.
