View Full Version : 4wd / offroad toy options

Fellow A-lagers.... being stuck in Karratha is boring me, I need a fast toy up here.

Not being a 4wd man I have utterly no clue what makes a good 4wd toy.
So help me out with some theories, somewhere under 15k budget.

Would like it to have a bit of power so I can enjoy a normal road drive also or powering around on sand / salt flats rather then just slow rock climbs I think...
Thoughts of buying a cheap GU/GQ patrol then putting a rb25, with gate, into one have crossed my mind (Paycheck spec conversion)... dunno how things like that would go offroad?

Also,
If you have something interesting that fits the bill PM me... GO.

a pootrol with a twin cam RB would be pretty cool, but i dunno how well it would cope lugging around a big car in the heat up there...

4.2TD pootrol would do the job just fine!

if it were me...

GQ Shorty 4.2TD with 3" zorst
5" lift
35's
throw some lockers on there and that should sort your budget with something that will get you anywhere!

With appropriate cooling an RB in a patrol would be fine in the north west...

..until you got to the servo and tried to fill it up lol, you'd probably be better off with a diesel.
We always had Cruisers when I was living in Karratha, after going pretty much everywhere in the Pilbara and Kimberly with them I'd vouch for them until the end of time.

Although it depends on what you're definition of fun is..

Heaps of 4WD with lift kits etc. for sale around the Point Sampson, Roeburne, Wickham and Karratha area from what I saw (just flew home). I am sure you could find something up there already modded and ready for everything for cheap?

FJ20 Land Cruiser sounds awesome though, or the short wheelbase Patrol.

Failing all the above, hit up a lada and source the roof mount gun attachments for it. That'd be a hit :P

Whats the deal with SWB's? More capable? To me they just look odd...

^^^ See this is more what I'm talking about... there are a few v8 conversions floating around, bit more fun then a standard diesel no doubt?

Continue with theories! Also, not interested in paying Karratha prices... work have agreed to transport it up from Perth for me for free so not an issue.

Exactly... DO you plan on 4wdriving or just for getting around with the offchance of a bit offroad?

If you're just going to go offroad, go LWB... But if you plan on proper 4by'ing, go the short. More clearance, less chance of getting stuck!

80 series will drop an LS1 is with minimal modifications...

That and GAS injection will be the best performance mod you can do it makes them unstoppable and the plus side is they are much better on juice as well for the tarmac.

We tow a trailer full of trailbikes and kite durfing gear up the beach with the back of the wagon full of camping gear and have no problems stop starting or getting stuck

actually a short wheelbase doesn't automatically mean better off road
better ramp over angle etc yeah, but it all depends on the track your driving, i've been on some tracks where my brothers shorty struggled and i cruised over it and vice versa, also shorty's are less stable and more prone to tipping back etc
depends what you want, i got a lwb cause i have a family and prefer the extra space when camping etc

for 15k you'd find a gu with a 4.5 petrol and manual, got heaps of grunt and live axles front n rear, awesome off road and can always turbo it if you want more grunt, also the nissans have the best lsd in the business, a 500 buck front auto lokka and it will be super capable
tell me when you find one and i'll come out with you, got a couple guys keen to head out on sunday hopefully, just gotta find some tracks to hit up here

Im with trav when he says shortys arnt everything. Way less room for camping stuff and they dont really rein supreme offroad like everyone assumes they do.

Go for the lwb wagon instead, they are way cheaper and still have good enough departure and approach.

You shouldnt need to spend 15k if your looking for a fishing/camping/screwing about 4wd. If it was me and i wasnt planning on driving it to work or anything i would be getting cruiser/patrol with a v8 fitted and some chunky tyres and at least a rear locker/decent LSD. Will get you most places and with a bit of power they are pretty good fun too.

if you don't need or want a large 4x4, look at sierras, super capable and unlimited mods that can be done to make them more capable, also very cheap
examples below i found in 2 mins on gumtree

supercharged sierra, plenty of money left over for lockers/tyres/susp etc

http://perth.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehicles-Motorbikes-Parts-cars-Supercharged-1-5-EFI-Suzuki-Sierra-1990-6-months-rego-150-BHP-W0QQAdIdZ219369040

cheap sierra, heaps of room for same mods mentioned above plus baleno 1.6/4agze/commo v6 conversion

http://perth.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehicles-Motorbikes-Parts-cars-Suzuki-sierra-1992-W0QQAdIdZ215951666

this probably best project base, front locker and engine conversion and it'll go anywhere

rb conversion gu means you gotta buy one with the rd28 turbo diesel, it's a bolt up job to the gbox then, but they will smash box's with a rb30det
and jay's wrangler would shit on my patrol lol, has a 3 inch lift and 33 inch muddies
i was referring to his patrol shorty
