What's a good point and shoot camera that's small, easy and gives good pics?
Been looking at a Sony Cybershot DSCTX5. (http://www.sony.com.au/product/dsc-tx5/sku/dsc-tx5_b+++au2) Seen some shots taken with a similar model and the panoramic sweep shots looks awesome.
Any others similar or better out there at a good price?

i literally just got off the phone with Digital Camera Warehouse and put an order in for a point and shoot for my parents for there wedding anniversary next week.
got them the:
Canon IXUS 130 IS in black (as well has 8gb memory card, extended warranty, pouch)
http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod1868.htm
they are the cheapest place i found and you actually get canon warranty for the year where Direct Cameras are imports and you get there own warranty for a year where you have to send it back to them not the manufacturer warranty....plus they were $50 dearer!
Canon IXUS 300 HS
http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod6827.htm
was gonna get this one for them but was outside my price range plus would be a bit hard for mum and dad to use. the 130 IS buttons & menu is similar to the IXUS they have had for a couple years now.

The Panasonic Lumix range is awesome.
My wife has one (TZ7 I believe - the super zoom one), and in a lot of situations it will produce a great shot with FAR less hassle than my DSLR.
I don't know if it is their partnership with Leica, but they have the metering sorted out really, really well. Leica lenses means the shots are crisp too.
It is the sort of camera that makes you feel like you've got more talent than you do, purely down to the results.
I'm a Canon guy, but there was (basically) no contest when I did my research. I've recommended it to others who have been very happy too.
If I was traveling and had to leave the DSLR at home, I'd be buying myself a Panasonic Lumix Zoom... or just stealing my wife's one.
Got the Canon 100is. Piece of shit can't focus at night (think nightclub self portraits) to save itself. My old canon ixus i zoom is still in use for this very reason.

I use a Lumix FT-1 as it is durable and I tend to drop mine.. also I like being able to take it in the snow/near cars without worrying about damaging it.

this amazes me, I purchased the Canon Ixus 130IS some 9 months ago in Singapore for $299SG with 2 x Sandisk 8gb cards, mini tripod, spudz cleaning cloth and travel case. At the time, the dollar conversion rate was $1.00AUD = $1.18SG meaning the cost in AUD was approx. $253.oo.
As for warranty - I think its a 1year global RTB international warranty.

Have used all, The FT2 is a big improvement over the FT1, but the Sony TX5 is my favorite point and shoot at the moment.
3" touchscreen, waterproof, shockproof. The best, and easiest panorama mode in any camera to date. And a ridiculous 10 photos per second at full res (10MP). Not to mention it looks a shitload better and smaller than the FT2.
I like the IXUS 130 too, nice and small, bit of a chicks camera but.

I'm looking at an FT1, should have it by the weekend if you want to have a look. If my Gecko mount arrives in time I'll have movies to show you also.
For a minor thread hi-jack this camera uses an SD or SDHC memory card - SDHC is obviously better when capturing HD video which the camera does, but will my laptop still recognise the memory card? Sure I can use the cable but it's easier not to :)

I picked up a Canon PowerShot SX210 IS recently and am loving it (some others are hating it when I bring it along to gatherings).
14x zoom and producing great pics. Picked it up to get good happy snaps of my son. I'm no photographer and it's the only one I have used so don't have anything to compare it to, but I'm very happy with the purchase.
Does HD video recording at the touch of a button (no need to turn the dial to video to make it record, which I love and is good for capturing moments immediately).

Anyone played around with an Olympus Tough3000?
Does underwater, SDHC (probably standard in most nowdays), 720p HD video 30fps, 1x MP, optical zoom without protruding lens etc..
Panasonic lets you zoom during movies, not sure if the Olympus does.

I've got an FT1, had it for about a year and its been solid!
Video and image quality is great from what it is, Use it mainly for concerts/festivals where I cant take my DSLR/expensive glass.

FT1 is ass. FT2 is a considerable improvement.
And yeah Dan, SDHC is anything over 2GB, very common. All the last seasons range now actually have compatibality with SDXC, which is capable of holding up to 2 Terabyte. Its about $700 for a 48GB, and close to 2 grand for a 2TB. And if ur laptop is the one you bought off me then yes it will, if its within about 2-3 years it should.

Why is FT1 ass? Keeping in mind if I want anything above drunken nightclub shots I use a professional :) I want it for videos and underwater fun, and don't intend on going below 3M water level. Of course if I can't swing a FT1 cheap enough then the FT2 is my next best bit.
The Sony TX5 gets rave reviews but I agree with the reviewers that it's a camera designed for asian girls.. Looks super girly with the slide down front etc.

FT1 has been out of production for over 3 months in Australia. I wanted to order some 3 months ago for when I was at Harveys and couldn't.
I just find the sensor pretty slow and its a chunky camera. TX5 is dope, much more powerful and faster sensor. I would love to see a good underwater panorama shot with it. Plus its small and no one would ever guess it's WP/SP just by looking at it. I wouldn't say it's perfect but its close to it.
IMO the Canon D10 would be perfect if it didn't look like a bubble.

Who buys a camera, going on its looks?
Deans on the Money, the IQ from those are great. But as i stated before...
Someone with an iPhone could take a better pic than someone with a 5k lens and body set-up!

Appears to be more of a fashion accesory than a camera.
I just picked up an FT1 for under $300 brand new to my door, happy days.

The other cameras offer the same features without being queer as aids.. Aesthetics aside, the Canon is good, but I picked up the one I wanted dirt cheap, so I'll hand this thread back over to Lewis now haha

Definitely not recommending an olympus FE 3010. Took decent photos in the shop but when playing around at home takes really shit photo's it's shutter speed is piss poor so if the camera isnt completely still its a guaranteed blurry shot. Light has to be perfect as well. Waste of money.

Went around Cape Range national park the other week with it. Tried getting some underwater panorama shots. REALLY hard to stay still enough in the water to get one to work. I got a few and they worked out amazing. I love this camera a lot. Battery life is the only negative for me.
Will post shots i got soon.

These were taken at Oyster Stacks probably 2hrs before sunset so lighting wasn't ideal. Some visible vertical lines through most of them. Hardest part is holding still enough while swimming to get an even sweep. Still pretty cool though IMO.

Taking and underwater pano would be a nightmare, waves rolling in and knocking you around and shifting sands would have made it almost impossible to catch a picture that you could stitch together. My camera assists in pano shots by lining up a portion of the previous photo but underwater that wouldn't look like anything!!

THREAD REVIVAL!!!
Car got broken into. Camera stolen. Need a new point and shoot. What's good these days?
Was looking at the Powershot SX230 (http://www.canon.com.au/For-You/Digital-Cameras/SX230HS) to replace the SX210 I had.
Also thinking about the Panasonic Lumix FT series for durability (considering I have a 3 year old) and to be able to take shots in the water with summer coming up.
I sold my 450d and bought a S100. Very impressive little unit.

I purchased a Cybershot WX100 nearly 2months ago.. it is magnificent pocket sized PTS cam and i was very happy with it.. unfortunately it went swimming in rose' not long after that..
At the time of purchase heard great things on the upcoming RX100 and not being available yet i disregarded it..
Anyhow picked up an RX100 from Plaza cameras last week and i tell you now this thing is the best dam compact cam i have ever used in my life!! Yes it costs twice the price but well worth it.. also rids of the need me needing a new dslr..
If your looking at only spending $300.. go the wx100.. my mrs has a cheaper cybershot (150ish) and the wx100 shits all over it in clarity and overall quality of images. Also has a massive zoom.
