Need some advice. :)
I will be taking out my gearbox on Saturday, I was wondering when anyone else has done it - what have you used to sit the gearbox on? What did you use to move it around? Or should I just get a pallet? Is there a generic stand that a gearbox can sit on, on wheels so it can be pushed around easy? Or should I just get a wooden pallet?
As the car will more than likely be cut in half (unless someone wants the shell for pittance) I will need the front cut to sit on something as well - probably a pallet for easiness and availability (unless I remove the engine - at that point I will need to get an engine stand).
Is it hard to make these stands? Or cheap to buy them from somewhere? Or has anyone got something I can borrow and return to them with a carton?
Any help/advice is appreciated. :)
Cheers,
Paul

unless your working on the engine, you dont need an engine stand. if you want to becareful, get something absorbing like a spare tyre and sit in engine in that.
to make life easier, your probably better removing the engine/gearbox in one hit, disconnect everything, put a small jack underneath the gearbox to take the weight, undo the gearbox crossmember/engine mounts et etc, then lift the engine up and out with an engine crane while lowing the jack supporting the gearbox. it would be alot easier then trying to remove the gearbox separately and then the engine if the car is on jack stands.
half-cut, put it straight on a pallet and tie it down.

Sounds like you're in over your head.
But anyway i prefer to remove the engine and box as one. Some of those bellhousing bolts can be a real pain in the arse to get to.
Elevate the rear of the car so the angle does not need to be as great when removing both or you can cut the rad support and pull it out almost horizontal

My front end is fucked, and I can remove the whole lot then horizontally as rad support etc. was raped hard.
Would prefer to leave engine in due to half-cut. But might be easier then to remove whole lot as one.
It is a big job, I know, but I need to learn this stuff at the same time.
I have spare wheels and tyres, I will sit the wheels under the car as well just in case to hold the car up.
Going to grab some pallets today hopefully. :)

If it's anything like pulling my gearbox out, get a lot of friends. It took us 4 people to get it in and out without a gearbox stand, that said also having 4 sets of hands makes undoing shit and generally getting shit done a lot easier.
I'm going on a whim and assuming your gearbox is setup the same as mine, but with a different gearset. You'll need to undo the inspection plates and undo the pressure plate bolts to fully separate the box from the motor.
I had next to no clue when I did mine, but great learning experience.
Get plazma cutter, Cut car in half, Cut rear end up into little pieces, sell as full front cut. Why waste time and efffort pulling it appart. you wont do it any damage putting it on a pallet.
This has gone a long way from a repairable write off that could have been fixed to a waste of a chassis pretty quickly...

No one wanted it - I have no intention of having it sit there for another couple months. Worth more in parts.
Plus, too many fucktards wasting my time. Changing their mind, pulling out etc. Pissing me off - I want it gone.
Might have to do that, will see how it goes. Depends what offers come through and on what. I need to figure out how to remove the windscreen too. :(
remove the windscreen with a hammer or do you intend trying to sell that too?
