where is some decent shops to go in and have a look at?
price isn't really an issue, just a decent range of gear to check out would be good.

I believe "MickT" will have his account with DigitalRev in the next week or so...
If you don't mind grey import gear, that is.

haha, smart ass. i'm better than those inferior retail people. :p
going to check out Camera Electronic this arvo.
Corbs - we just want to have a look at some tripods, etc in the flesh before we buy them.. likely be able to get it cheaper through work anyway.
Camera House in Oxford St Leederville have always been awesome to deal with.

Been to a few places and camera electronics are deff the best. Got put onto them by brodie.
Had my camera cleaned just before i went on holidays and they did it same day service and managed to change a part for me as well for about half where i was charged by the place around the corner from them.

Yep... Stu @ QualityCamera is a legend... Has helped me out before and as an added bonus, all his gear is genuine Australian sourced gear, so it's actually got local warranty coverage... (Not that Camera Electronic and the Camera Houses don't have the same suppliers, but his prices usually beat them by a long shot, to the point where his competition price wise is often the grey importers...)

from the quick look i just had.. his prices are pretty average (for the items i'm after anyway, he might be better elsewhere).
ie. 100-400L, $2290.
can get it for $2200 through my own work, $2085 through cameradirect.com, or $1650 from a grey importer.

Mitch, i have spent alot with Stu and his service is second to none, its all about aftercare. That price would include a UV filter and most probably extended warranty! They guy knows his shit and Prides himself on customer service and as mentioned aftercare!
Think of it this way
Your lens fucks up!
If you bought your gear through Stu. he would give you another lens exact same whilst you get your repaired!
Grey import - Send it back OS and wait 4 months whilst the try say you're at fault!
Suddenly that extra cash is worth its weight in gold!
I used to sell camera gear and deal directly with Canon and get better pricing through the rep.. But now I'll only import through a reputable online store like DigitalRev.
Fuck warranty, Most of the time paying for a couple of repairs rather than trying to claim international warranty will still end up cheaper.

there is no mention of a filter and/or extended warranty... even if it's just for the aussie warranty, i'd be buying from camerasdirect and saving just over $200.
or i can save $640 and have an international warranty...
i'm not trying to deny Stu's service or anything, that kind of service is pretty fucken good actually...
but i just don't think that service is worth $200 to ME, maybe if i were to use that lens every day, i can see the $200 being a worthwhile investment.

Noted and im aware of your needs Vs. Others... I thought i'd just outline why his prices are that little bit extra!

fair enough... was more to whoever said his prices were on par with grey imports.
if i were in the photography game, that backup service would come in very handy i'd imagine!

Ive had 6 or 7 L lenses in my time and never had one with an issue, few bought from Stu the rest were grey imports, most the issues you hear with lenses is mostly user error!

Go a Lowepro Slingshot bag. A 200AW size should fit all what you said in it. And Lowepro have lifetime warranty if you get a bit rough with it and bust the zips from time to time.

i will buy the grey import lens and save myself $500+ then, and i can do a warranty claim through work if i ever need to.

Yeah. There is zero disadvantage with buying Canon branded lenses online. I just ordered a 17-40mm L for my future 5d. I think they do need to be an authorised dealer overseas but.
