Clownbreak got one flight in Mon. None Tuesday. None yesterday morning so the night shift who was meant to go home got stuck at site. My day shift crew got out on the arvo all be it delayed. Site kept running for about 36 hours after it started raining. The road network is destroyed. Any extra production they managed to get out while it was raining will be lost in the weeks worth of work it'll take to fix the roads again.
And apparently there's more rain predicted in the next week or so.

How are they operating now? When I left there was the big slip that closed one ramp, and the bottom of the pit was so small there was only enough room for one truck, and they had started drilling and blasting right behind the byrnecut workshop.

Got the talk this morning in open pit.
All normal for this financial year. Come July things will start happening..
Going to cut back to 1 digger working and 16 trucks. Other ancillary gear, (drills, dozers) to be reduced redundancies to follow in all departments.
West dome, stage 6/7 will be shut down, and only working stage 4 (where Leighton are leaving).
Details on who and when haven't been told to us yet. What we were told is that they will be sort notice.
Newcrest has figured this plan based on a 1350/ounce gold price. If it drops more expect more cutbacks.
This was from the site manager so it's the official word no gossip.

13-06-2013, 01:57 PM
8/6 or 2/2 require 4 crews for operational roles. 2/1 requires 3. On a large scale operation personnel is one of the largest non capital costs. Going to more operationally focused rosters will save big dollars.
8/6, 9/5 or basically any even time roster only makes commercial sense in this climate for professional or day shift only roles where you need 2 people per role.

Likewise. I doubt we've hit the bottom of the market yet and there are rumors of some more pain coming all the way from juniors to the major mining houses.
The best thing we have going for us all at the moment is the falling AUD. The sooner and the more it falls back the better off some of the more marginal operations will be.
I posted about a month ago asking if people were feeling the pinch..

Meh, has been happening at WorleyParsons for the last few months - entire departments laid off, managers having to be escorted out of the building because they're irate (presumably because they thought they were safe). Though I'd have really thought employees of operators would be some of the safest.
Neither oil & gas, nor mining & resources are easy industries to be in at the moment...
Need to soldier through an election. Let the commodity price lift somewhat, await the fall of the aussie dollar into the 80c region. This will be at least 12 months in the making and subject to consumer sentiment. Don't expect too much market movement/ potential growth signs until this time next year. At which point the labour pricing may have adjusted to a reasonable level and maintain a viability within the resource sector. If We continue pricing ourselves out of competition globally the Australian resource sector will not exist in 20 years.

Simple rinse and repeat scenario ... companies get too top heavy ... choke off new positions ... cull double ups and pointless made up positions ... rinse .... and within 6 months they are at it again employing for made up positions to supply to the demand.
The industry will plateau ... when they say the "mining Boom" is over in a sense i think the best way to describe that is most of the yobbo's and TA's and unskilled labourers will loose their jobs and will have to come back to Perth and will be hit with a reality check.
Skilled labourers will always have a place in the industry - if i was looking to secure a long term career in the industry get into the maintenance side of things - there is always going to be a need for repairs and maintenance to be done.

Precisely. There was an article on PerthNow of how some FIFO workers are already needing to take pay-cuts to retain their jobs.
About fucking time IMO. There are a LOT of skilled people working up there and they do deserve to get paid handsome salaries, however there's also a tonne of drop-kicks who get paid much the same amount with very little, if anything, in the way of skills.
Also does nothing for the cost of labour in Perth. $120 call out fee and $80 an hour onsite for an 'average' skilled labour force. The pricing isn't the issue (to a degree) but the problem lies in the fact that there is no experienced labour here, thus a 4 hour job takes 2 days and the end result is satisfactory at best.

JME's on to it. China is currently transitioning to a domestic consumption based economy and as such is beginning a path of wholesale changes to the way it grows. It will still require access to stable supply of resources to fuel this however the increase in this demand will be quite flat compared to the exponential growth we've become accustomed to. The AUD falling is nothing short of a blessing and having it back at 80c would make the world of difference to our economy (and not just in mining), make no mistake it's hurt our economy badly having a high currency.
The period ahead will be rough but it's not the end of the world, I believe the real "crash" will come when the major construction projects finish up and the mythical investment pipeline the Government was crowing about dries up. I just can't see too may more major resource projects getting green lit any time soon as we've proven we are unable to deliver them on budget and on time which severely affects the return on investment. The Australian resources industry exemplifies the law of diminishing returns and the people who sign the cheques know it.

Much the same?
Site based grad environmental scientists, engineers, geologists, surveyors etc don't even crack six figures. They usually work 5/2/4/3 which honestly is a pingpingpingping of a roster.
"Track Maintenance Technicians" i.e. blokes who service and repair points, do a weld or two a day etc start at around $150,000. They work an even time roster and are salaried staff, so there's super, annual leave, share options, sick days etc on top of that.

"Much the same" was comparing people within the same field; obviously different fields are going to be remunerated differently, and that's also a whole other argument...
Generally speaking grads are easy to get rid of as well so are among the first to go.
Yup, lots have gone from WP as well. If not fired, they've been dropped down to minimal hours and have themselves decided to quit and pursue other opportunities.

Newcrest hasn't let any go yet but has retracted all offers for next years intake from what I have heard (mech/elec anyway, don't know about others). And all those coming off the program at the end of this year wil not get full time roles, unless there is a miracle.
Having said this they were taking too many on anyway IMO, not enough positions available.

Most Contractors here have received letters to cut 25% of their contract cost - interestingly enough the major cost is labor not supplies, so heads will roll steadily over the next 6 weeks or so as meetings commence.

Received this email just now from the VP of Mines @ BHP!
This is huge!!!
The Rio email I beleive was much worse and was related to job cuts!
I am hearing all over the business at the moment of jobs being revoked (just before signing of contract) even for internal jobs.
I do beleive this will pick back up shortly but until then, stay where you are kids!
19 June 2013
Dear Colleagues
Iron Ore Mines has significantly increased manning numbers over the past two years with the insourcing of HWE (~2500) and Ngarda (~200) and recruitment for our growth mines (~1000).
While not yet complete this recruitment drive is coming to an end as these projects wind down.
At the same time there has been and will continue to be considerable effort made to increase the productivity of our operations.
To prepare for this future state, recruitment of trades and operators for JB and ER will continue as planned as will the insourcing of selected embedded contractors across Mines.
Apprentice and trainee recruitment will also continue as planned.
Other external recruitment will stop. This decision will however be regularly reviewed in line with business requirements.
Internal recruitment will continue as normal.
This change will have the positive effect of creating new opportunities for our staff and further the development of our workforce to meet existing and future operational requirements.
Eduard Haegel

This more like increases your chance of a transfer as they will nly consider internal applicants.

Correct! They are merely changing the org structures and re arranging people.
As someone mentioned before, there are so many people here who were hired for stupid reasons so created a lot of double ups in the work place.
We have been removing a lot of contractors, including administrative and having those tasks taken on by someone else who is permanant (ie; removing a production training administrator and having those particular tasks managed by the dept administrator) so in fact they are giving more tasks to the permanant employees but this is ok atm during these slow times, onmce it picks up again they will deffinitely re hire contractors and so forth!

Couldn't agree more. My dream job would be to go back to BHP (or someone like it) and rid it of all the soft cocks and inefficient phaggotry it's decided to implement over the past decade and turn it back in to a lean production focused company. It will never, ever happen as it's too ingrained in the corporate culture to ever be weeded out.
If there's one thing going for working for the small junior miners it's that you don't have the ability to pander to the princesses even if you want to so it's easy to put a stop to silly little things quickly.

Mine site affiliated companies are the same. i was at Komatsu Welshpool and a new HR girl started she was pretty hot but had the usual woman in power super bitchy attitude. After a couple months it was discovered she done a shoot for FHM so of course pictures were found and nearly every phone on site was sending them around. Soon management found out and everyone on site had to go for a 1hr sexual harrasment re-education meeting. After that we weren't allowed magazines like Zoo, FHM etc on site.
Its fucking retarded, some one shoudl of just told this chick to STFU she took the pics now deal with it they were readily available on the FHM website as well so its not like they were hacked or stolen pics.

It takes longer to do anything but that process is peer reviewed like no tomorrow so that it mitigates as many fuck ups down the track as possible.

They are only huge because of the deposits and government incentives to develop these they secured in the 60's/70's. What they do today has nothing to do with their sucess now. Think of them as the Professional Sons of the mining industry, living the good life on the fruit of previous generations work.

Your not an Macmahon employee are you? My understanding is that all the 'Contractors' have left Christmas Creek hence why we are finally getting full strength alcohol in the con-camp.
From what I understand FMG have pre-sold their ore in the CC2 expansion so fluctuating iron ore prices dont really affect the company as such. (Apart from their restructure and re-financing last year)

This isn't quite true.. Pretty sure they are just telling Downers and Macmahons to cut/suspend mining for a little bit. As we have millions and millions of tonnes in stockpiles waiting to go through the OPF and have pretty much run out of room to put it. So just cutting the ore mining for a bit. But FMG itself isn't losing anyone.. Infact quite the opposite, finally hiring back all the people we lost in september last year.

Just got back from a 2 week stint in Kalgoorlie, barmaids rekon it's been really quiet lately since the prices dropped. Week before we spent 3 hours in the bar and had maybe 15 people come in, they rekon it's usually 50+ for a tuesday/wednesday night.

At this rate, vacation work will be far and few between.
I doubt the carbon tax/mining tax will be scrapped (probably just renamed as something else and still in place) but if it does - would this turn stuff around up there a little?
People I've spoken to are considering a jump overseas for work (even Africa) so it doesn't sound good at the moment.

I spoke with the GM of Engineering for Roy Hill this week and he said as they are the only show in town (WA) atm they are inundated with applications from exceptional people! Some of the short lists are 15 people! That's huge! All of which he said were amazing fit for the roles!
So if you apply for Roy Hill via any of the contractors or direct, make sure your CV's and cover letters are excellent!!
I also know of people who were rejected immediately and not sure why! But later had it over turned by contacts so they could join the pool of interviews!
They will have jobs in both the mine and port so it huge employment opportunities!!
I'm keeping an eye on it all invade something pops up that suits me!

Why would you leave your cushy, stable and comparatively overpaid job with BHP? Serious question here and I'm not taking the piss. Leaving BHP for Roy Hill at the moment would be utter madness. RH only has partial funding in place for the project. Sure if it means a dramatic increase in wages then why not however I severely doubt that anyone with 1/2 a brain and an eye for cost management this early in the project would offer rates comparable to what BHP offered people like yourself when HWE got taken over, the market conditions just don't support it.

Luckily for me what I was offered was what I wanted, but it meant some sacrifices. Worth it for the experience mind you.

I hate the 5:2 4:3 roster. It's such a head fuck!! I'm constantly tired and stressed! Struggle to get 1 day annual leave here and there let alone a holiday. Been 3 years since I last had a holiday.
I realise this is the life for most fifo but I am just not cut out for it, simple.
I want a residential role somewhere with Tom.
Yes I do realise that no one can match what I'm currently paid, but I am happy to sacrifice some of that in order to be happy.

We had a quarterly update tonight and they went on about struggling ore prices and running costs etc etc. So basically from now on we have to do more with less staff

Haha funny you say that. The day after they did the redundancies they advertised internally for "backup" operators for the service carts! A LOT of people were quite pissed at that.
I'm struggling to make it t my 10 years next November. The place is a shit hole and can only see it getting worse as they do more redundancies at the start of October and start of December if they stick to the current plan.
I'm doing my best to make myself a good candidate for redundancy now.
