Done lots of heavy structural fabrication through my apprenticeship. Since then have been working doing fixed plant shutdowns chute repairs, parent metal repairs, general repairs for anything damaged along with and other misc. Works that needed doing. I have done some small project works at dampier salt and GTU fabrication and installs at cape Lambert and East Intercourse.

Only what has been leaked on posted on Perthnow http://www.perthnow.com.au/business/man-presumed-dead-after-workplace-fall/story-e6frg2r3-1226069260377

I'm guessing if he wasn't found straight away, chances are he'll be recovered by divers (if at all :( ) as chances are he was knocked out by either falling scaffolding or simply by impact with the water if it was a big fall.

ryanr32
04-06-2011, 07:13 PM
If he was errecting/dismantling he may have been hooked off to the scaf. It's deep on that wharf if he was double hooked he would have stood no chance or knocked out. Sad thing to hear.

Passage GT
04-06-2011, 10:49 PM
i've worked with a lot of scaffy's though and if there's a drop of even a couple metres they wear a harness and are hooked up with all the right heights gear, if he's been working at heights and fallen it's because he's done something wrong, with the correct equipment used in the correct way it shouldn't happen.
it's a damn shame either way,

ryanr32
04-06-2011, 11:31 PM
He didn't fall the scaffold fell into the water presumably with him still attached. Rio require a harness to be worn at all times when there is the potential to fall from one level to another whether it's 1 metre or 10. If there is no suitable anchor point they are permitted to work with a double hook up system so there is every chance he was doing everything right and made an error in dismantling the structure

Passage GT
04-06-2011, 11:44 PM
they never mentioned on the news etc if the entire scaf had fallen into the water, only that they found his helmet in the water and were searching for his body, i spent a lot of time working with scaffy's at cape lambert so i'm well aware of their procedures on the matter.

ryanr32
04-06-2011, 11:52 PM
The memo from rio tinto executives said the scaffold had collapsed into the water no one saw him fall in but they found his helmet. Sad something he did everyday and 1 mistake can be fatal

sorry for your loss mate, and that's a very good argument, no doubt whatever he was hooked onto fell as well and kept him down, life jacket and no harness may well have saved his life in that instance, but the big thing to remember is, there is no place for common sense or logic on a mine site, evil things!

Down at Binningup, riggers where to wear a floatation vest over thier harnesses ( some special one where the lanyard goes through the back) while working over tanks. They filled the tanks up 3m with water, so if the lanyard or whatever else they were hooked onto went, they still could float.

+1 Condolences on the loss of your mate. As you said same old story. Sometime the most obvious safety improvement gets missed.

I got laughed at for suggesting life jackets in HME working in the main pit at Koolan Is. May sound silly initially but if your working below sea level protected by a shaky at best sea wall I know what I would like to have as a safety measure.

most the time we'll still get a hse notice describing the incident and what they've discovered so far, will just say something about it pending investigation before they can discover the cause and what could have been done etc.
we didn't get anything like that so far though.

btw on the hr thing, i had mine when i first worked in the industry, got on site and was one of 2 people on the crew with it, helps more to know someone in the industry than it does to have tickets and licences, saying that a heights, confined space and forklift would most likely be at least as useful in getting your foot in the door

I've been there three months and I rate it.

The rail operations rooms are fucking awesome (see pictures)
The location is awesome; in the best & most expensive part of Port, a short stroll to everything; shops, beach (100m), bottle'o etc.
The food is good, because they're not cooking for 2,000 people, unlike Port Haven etc.
They even run you back and forwards to the airport, so your colleagues don't have to do it.

What's not to like? The gym could be a bit bigger but it's still got everything.

Jizz-Lebrity
17-06-2011, 06:56 PM
Yeah, pretty much.

Despite troll; I'll happily take my large salary, most of which is disposable - given the expense-free living I enjoy for the 7 months of the year I actually spend "working", over the awesomeness of being home every night.

Hell, I could get into jew mode by getting back on the 4&1 roster projects where you gross the best part of $200,000/annum in wages and never spend a cent of it while at work. It's not pleasant, but that's how you end up buying your second house before you're 21 and being otherwise debt free.

Jizz-Lebrity
17-06-2011, 07:12 PM
what is heaps of cash to you guys? how much in your hand a week?

I grossed $108,000 in my last six months as a direct hire employee (with leave entitlements etc) at MLJV, so on average, around $2,500 net each week.

My new staff job with the company my old company used to contract to (not allowed to say I was poached, so I wont) is $136,000 base salary + 14% super + 10% bonus + 27 shifts leave and I barely work half the year.

I live in an awesome room in town with everything I need available for free, get enough frequent flyer's to fly to Phuket each year and then some, I'm home every 2nd weekend, plus as above - most of my income is disposable since I don't pay to drive to or feed myself at work, for flights, or my gym/Qantas club membership.

Working away fucking sucks man.

We currently fly several employee's from over east (white collar), and I know of several blue collar companies that fly from the east / thailand / bali / NZ. All working on our site (karratha).

this is too true, first camp i stayed in was the old pub motel rooms in roebourne, 3 times the size of any donga i've seen with solid brick walls and big bathroom, couldn't hear your neighbor even if he had music cranking

IMHO, your best bet is to register with a heap of the recruitment agencies. Alot of the big mines are owner/operator and as such are hiring from agencies and then recruiting from there. You can also look at the main companies webpages which always have vacancies under the Career tabs. (ie: www.riotinto.com www.newcrest.com.au www.newmont.com www.bhp.com.au etc)

The good old "who you know" stuff isnt as used as everyone thinks, as most people who have been referred have fucked someone over at some stage. From my experience, no one refers anyone now-a-days.

Been 3 weeks since I asked my uncle to find out about getting me a job in the mines, dunno what's going on. Really want to get out there and make some money

I want 2x1, who exactly do you apply to. Just go directly to Ausdrill? Don't really want to go underground if I can avoid it.

If you have a HR licence your pretty much guaranteed a job as a RC offsider, will probably be exploration 3/1 though. I did this 4 or 5 months ago and was offered jobs with Boart, Wallis and Mosslake.

Has anyone here done shut down work for an extended period of time rather that becoming full time? Would like to get an idea of the ups/downs of this sort of work, company is Monodelphus.

they always have work, i worked for mono's but for their fulltime crew at cape lambert before my current job, spoke with heaps of construction and shutdown guys and the most they were ever out of work was like 6 weeks and that was a rarity, so much expansion going on at the moment it's probably even less, they were on decent money too.

not sure if shutdown crews are different but my brother left 2 months after getting forklift, dogging and ewp tickets through them, they weren't happy but he'd been there for 2 years with nothing but promises and he was really unhappy there, has been heaps of staff changes lately.

Nothing wrong with Orica mate. We have just had them start here at Citic on a new contract. Solid company with good prospects.

And while I'm at it if anyone on here was part of the contractor scums RDO night party at Citic's Errumurra camp, your a bunch of fucking pigs. I feel sorry for the ESS staff who have to clean up your mess + damage. Also there's a good chance the wetmess rules and going to get tougher and ruin life a little bit more for everyone else. Enjoy your day off today and I personally hope a few of you loose your accommodation / jobs !

This happens all the time all over the state. Contractors come in for a anywhere between 1 and 6 week contract, get a day off or it's their last day and they fuck everything fo rthose that work there full time. Wet mess goes to mid strength only (same price!!) and usually only get one or two open drinks at a time. Shits me to tears.

I work at both Rio and BHP, it seems that big incidents keep happening while I am up the NW. Atleast this time I wasn't on the site. It's a humbling feeling, when you know that even with all the safety systems, that we still manage to kill or seriously hurt people. I'd like to see the odds for the people working in the Pilbara vs Aus troops going into the middle east for military work. I think people would be surprised at the fatality rates.

Denver
18-08-2011, 08:58 AM
Nearly all of the accidents are avoidable, this one sounds odd, but im not going to speculate, rio is usually very open with its investigations into such events, so ill wait for the reports..

As an example of avoidable, the guy who lost his life at fmg at the end of last year, would still be alive if one simple step had been followed at the beginning of the procedure he ended up taking over<if the propper procedure had also been followed over all he'd still be alive but thats another point>, however, the night shift before him failed to follow the step, the guy before him didn't check, and neither did he, unfortunately it cost him his life.

It might sound harsh, but one persons death is thousands of others lessons, people will learn from these incidents given they now understand what can happen..

agree with denver, all our employee's and contractors were invited to a seminar in regards to the last fatality, what caused it and the outcomes they had got from it so far were explained in great detail, was a large question and answer at the end too, went for nearly 2 hours.
i expect we'll get the same next month for this latest one, hopefully it's the last one.

Yep. Spent 6 months there. Everything is brand new and rooms are a decent size. Food was average but that was probably due to the amount of people there. Probably not the best set out camp as everything is very spread out so you will have to do a lot of walking.

Got to be happy with the take-over at your end? You're much better of being BHP than a subby in all cases I've come across.

Is anything changing for you guys directly? I'm a fan of the take-over if it makes Iron Ore more profitable by cutting out the middle man (ie, bigger bonus for us) and gets the rest of the business on the 8/6 roster :)

I'm up over the hill at Area C and it is split here on who wants even time (for $$$) and who wants 8/6 or similar.... I want 8/6 with production bonuses as we had a daughter last year.

Jizz-Lebrity
20-08-2011, 07:34 AM
8/6 might as well be even time so there shouldn't be any complaints there, unless you are on a 2/2 type deal now?

I'm on 9/5 but only do 10 hour days, I'd happily go to 12s and cop the extra 6 hours per rotation for an extra day off, 8/6 FTW.

BHP gives unlimited sick leave up to 12 months paid at your total salary rate which is a bonus. Retards who use it excessively miss out on part/all of their production bonus and are marked down come performance review (read: payrise) time, but it's pretty handy to have if you're injured or need to have an operation with a long recovery period etc.

20-08-2011, 12:58 PM
Im over the other hill at Rio Yandi, office bitches are on 9/5 while everyone who works for a living and does night shift is on 2/1.

There are rumours about a 10 hour day, personally fuck that! Im here for the money, not the lifestyle.

Rio is similar with regards to sick leave, up to 18 months at a progressively decreasing rate. If you cant return to work, as in they cant find a role for you, Rio will pay you out a years wage at your base rate.

I hear this site is paid less than other sites as we employ more newbies, who in turn get experience and end up working elsewhere.

My bad, typo due to being on the nightshift.... We are on 2/1 at the moment. We've been told everything will remain as is until all the consolidation and auditing has been done (due end of October apparently) and then who knows? We all know BHPBIO love their staff doing even time rosters but that also means motelling at Area C (something BHP don't want to do but money talks bullshit walks) and also we have mining crews of 110 and probably 40-50 maintainance staff so that's another 150-160 EXPERIENCED people to find then there is OHP which would be another 50 or 60 so yeah, can't see it happening in the short term no matter how much they want it to.

I just hope as part of the contract re-negotiations ESS get fucked off so we can move Morris Corp in to cook me dinner :D

nothing has really effected us yet, the only thind so far is that camp change. theres been lots of talk (rumors) of going 8/6 eventually and people talking about pay cuts etc etc. in a perfect setup id like to go 8/6 and goto wages on same $$ but i think thats a bit to optimistic.
in regards to the 2/1 night shift stuff, people were saying its 8days on 6 off 8nights on 6 days off etc etc. none of this 4days4nights crap. bhp staff here on 8/6 are doing shared rooms too which i think would be totally shit !
