Would be interesting to know the age of the guy & if he was a single bloke or had just split from his misses/gf or something.

Relationship breakdowns seem to be the common factor in a lot of suicides of late.

At this stage, I'll probably live for ever...

I was on site in QLD last week and missed the back story behind Yandicoogina incident, but got filled in at lunch and now just reading the above. Very sad all round.

On a lighter note...this was keeping us (in)sane during the shut I was at last week. I swear it's a documentary from, well, pretty much any and every site I've been to!

Every single mining company atm is screaming for "good" LV and HD fitters - problem is most of them want experience.

I am looking for some dump truck ops, digger ops, dozer ops, etc. 785/D9/10/11, EX1900 PC3000 etc etc on a 2/1 - if anyone is looking hit me up.

Try macmahons they've been looking for people at telfer, be prepared to work with some special people tho.

Being direct and straight to the point, particularly if it is potentially to the point of what could be deemed aggressive would be a turn off for people recruiting for a FIFO roster. Particularly if they are recruiting you to join an existing team, there is alot more focus on integration to the team etc particularly when employers can be choosey at the moment.

A friend of mine is a very swtiched on fitter, however he is one of those blokes who will walk around and be the authority on how things should be done.......therefore doesn't gel well with existing teams and rarely makes it from contract to permanent role.

That's standard T&Cs for recruitment companies. Otherwise the recruiter could find someone suitable then the company just goes around them and hires direct, screwing the recruiter.

2 very different sites. I assume you're going in as a contractor?

RH being a relatively new and Pilbara Iron Ore mine is a big 'bells and whistles' affair - big jets to site, big camp, etc. Have heard mixed reviews on the culture at RH

Thunderbox is 15 years old, small (270 man camp), facilities are fairly basic and you fly 30 seater twin props to site. From all reports Saracen are good to work for. Camp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7IH0jPYhrA

If I were you, just starting out in mining, I would probably go with Thunderbox. Why?
- Gold is having an excellent run at the moment
- I reckon you can't beat the intimacy and camaraderie that comes with a small team at a small site - even if you're working as a contractor
- It's not as fucking hot as the Pilbara, but does get cold in winter.

Thunder box as a contractor working for a maintenance company.iv been in an out of thunder box but never stayed at the camp.

^WHS, cut your teeth at a smaller site in a company that doesn't use "throw bulk cash at the problem" as their primary problem solving technique, you'll learn more.

Although your size/weight may be an issue if you're travelling on small prop planes to site.

Marti

Ok, that changes it a little. I would always take a job working for the principal rather than for a contractor (IMO, taking into account I'm technical services too). That said, RH don't pay all that great, so you might find a higher hourly rate as a contractor at Thunderbox.

Yeah and I think its a little unfair, if a person is big and has shown signs that they do take care of them selves eg running, eating right, good form of working out and keeping fit. Lack of fitters won't be their fault - the industry is screaaaaaaaaaaaming for people atm. Shortages everywhere.

They're an UG contractor TJ working a legacy mine that's had more people plunder & pillage it than a Langtrees hooker in her prime.

They'll be on a super lean manning schedule because they would of near on bought the job and will be looking to do all they can to maintain any margin they can, meanwhile the client will be largely in the same boat as all junior to mid teir goldies always are hence the reliance on tight arse contractors who'll underbid the shit out of work to get work.

The economics still haven't changed. I'm here digging gold somewhere else in the world for a shit tonne lower cost per tonne thanks to only needing to pay people true market rates for their services meanwhile you can't get people to work for you for $35 bucks per hour.

The only shortage that exists is foresight.

Damo 69
28-10-2017, 05:10 PM
In fairness TJ would be in a world of trouble if he kid knapped his employee's first born and held them ransom until 10,000T of gold was removed and processed.

Buckets
28-10-2017, 05:18 PM
With the average head grade of these old Aussie mines being under so low 10,000T of ore wouldn't even pay for you to go another 3km/h quicker at RW next year.

Damo 69
28-10-2017, 05:47 PM
really just plucked a figure mate, 10,000T / 5,000m3 is about half a days work for us so i am assuming a slave driver with big kit would be doing that by smoko

pingpingpingping you have a fleet of shovels and 793's(?).

If that's all you're moving in 1/2 a shift plz get me a job. I to would like an inspiring opportunity to retire.

But some "quick maths" on what 10,000T of ~1g/t dirt is actually worth.

10t at a grade of one gram a tonne will net you roughly 10,000 grams of gold which works out to roughly ~320 troy ounces which at today's spot price ($1282) works out to about $400k.

Fuckin yeeee haaa you say. You can almost afford a HKS wrap and a Holinger and who knows if you offset the cost of the wrap with some warm Hoegaarden maybe even a working boost controller. But steady on a bit there's no way you've actually got near enough for anything like that.

Given it's going to cost you at least 800-1000 per ounce at a tired old ore body that's had the cream cut out of it you're only looking at a margin of ~$90k on that and that's assuming 100% recovery out of the 10,000T you whack through the mill which never fucking happens because mill rats & metallurgists are thieving lying scumbags that send all the gold to the tailings dam and then concoct some horseshit excuse that the mine fed them the wrong dirt all the time.

Then there's always these pesky issues of fixing things that fuck up or get fucked up by the fuck heads that you employ not to fuck stuff up, governments wanting more cash, gold reserves that your geo's swore were there not being there when you get there because there's a fault but they're sure as shit not a fault for not finding it earlier, digger ops and their merry band of dumb truckers sending and blending shit on the fly for fuck knows why... so on and so forth.

TL;DR - The margins in gold wind up tighter than Marbles purse strings. It's a fucked game.

10 x 50-70Ts
20 x sub 50T's

~12 x 785's
~55ish 30 - 40T moxy's

it is an engineered dig to accommodate 2 x nuclear reactors and associated cooling galleries, The rock formations must meet specific criteria before being soil nailed & covered over by concrete within 48 hours, therefore you actually can't just hook into it and shift muck as you need to have the concrete crew right up your ass or the whole lot gets rejected.

PC 3000 & 785's are junk for what we need to do, are just here as mining is quiet and the company had them sitting around at the time.

Geologists bitch and complain about dirt on formations so there are blokes out there with hand brooms removing dust from rock which is about to be covered in 3m of conc.

Heavily unionised, Civil project on a nuclear facility = slow - we get about 6.2 actual machine hours per 10 hour shift. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

Been thinking about a bit of career change from Residential construction. So I started sending my cv out to a few people and it's taken 10ish months but got a start for FIFO work.
2 and 1 at Telfer with a contracting company, not 100% on what I'm doing yet but I'm pretty sure it's concrete repairs on the mill?

I've worked primarily drive in drive out for rural building so shouldn't be much of a change in that regard, but we usually stay in the local pub so camp will be a new experience.
Any pointers from oldhands on gear that's worth bringing with me from Perth? Thinking thermos, water bottle, Esky bag for lunches, anything else?

I always have a laptop/hard drive full of tv shows and movies, not sure what Telfer is like but tv choice can be limited in some camps. Most camps have a gym if your into that so I always have a personal towel with me so I don't have to use my room ones for the gym. No idea how you came to the conclusion of truck drivers haha

Our team was what was left of the drawing office (after a few haircuts in the last 5 years), so any drafting, doc control, edm system, standards etc in RTIO was managed by us.
Last year we churned through 3 principals in 12 months and honestly they keep putting people with no experience into these leadership roles and they finally threw the whole lot (and us) into the too hard basket and outsourced the lot.

Knowing my luck I'll be back at rio within a year as a consultant.

She went up there a bit producing the tourism/come to Karratha TV campaigns so got to see a lot of the area and speak to a lot of locals/etc.. which got her interested. Then her family who used to live up there spoke highly of it and so on.
It's appealing that it is such a young town (mostly young couples/etc.. heck the average age is 8 due to the amount of kids) and the facilities seem pretty top notch for schooling and so on.

I'm easy I can live anywhere as long as the money is right or even easier if my family is there with me.

Ages ago yeah and toying with going back into IT. These days i'm mostly finance/reports/management but for a while I was rigging all over the north and construction here and there. Hold C1/RA and all that jazz. Only stopped that because I wanted to settle down eventually and a 4/1 roster wasn't conducive to that, left on good terms with the mob i worked with.

I'm tired of the work I'm doing and feel like I need a change.. burnt out I guess and going back into rigging would be fun and easy enough or maybe look at getting back into IT.. starting to do some online stuff to get up to speed with AWS at the recommendation of a mate.

+1 would live in karratha, it’s an actual town as opposed to a mine based town, yes it houses a lot of people supporting rio wood side etc but it’s separated from the worksites by enough distance you don’t feel it.

Also close enough to the various national parks, broome exmouth etc it’s not hard to get away for a few days.
