View Full Version : My V35
So... This is my 5-stud conversion...
Sold my 180, and picked this up. I was set on a V35, I wanted a stocker but couldn't go past this one. Some may know it. Its the old VDIRTY5. Bought... not built, but getting rebuilt. The engine is blown... literally. Getting some quotes on rebuilds atm and will take it from there.
Already have some plans for it so stay tuned ;) It had 20" GT-Cs on before but the owner sold them and slapped on some china 19s... needless to say, those are going as soon as something suitable pops up (and if I'm lucky they will be here when I get back from my holiday)
Some pics

Fark looking a little worse for wear, my mate owned this for a bit. Moves for a big car, GTC's were the shit - find them and buy them back!
Yea it is a little worse for wear, but I'm working on it. GTCs won't be making a come back. Already have something on the cards ;)
mitchy you had your chance!
Noice!
V35's are pretty killer.. with a new motor and some big rims, it'll be farkin excellent.
Looks to have a few mods! Got any details?
Off the top of my head...
Vortech Supercharger
Borla Exhaust
3-1 headers
Tein CS Coilovers
Whiteline F&R swaybars
Burnout Ks CF lip kit
Plenum spacer
That's pretty much it... and stock brembos :D
Theres a set of pistons rods etc on sale on boostcruising for 1600 bucks if it helps.

The crappy thing is that I will be away for 3 weeks from next week, so all these will have to get done when I'm back! Hope to get the engine rebuilt while I'm away so I can get back and run it in and have the new rims put on.
Shane don't tease! I won't go all out with the build, I will only boost it 6-7psi max anyway!

I'm not a fan of concave rims alot of the time, I like my dish. In saying that, I think the rims will suit this car nicely.
Though GTC's look titties.
I had my heart set on Work Varianza T1S with stepped lip, but decided to try something different. So many cars out there with GTCs, and in the US, lots of v35s with the T1Ss. Deciding to go for something different and see if it pays off ;)

Same engine (VQ35**) as the 350Z, Maxima etc right?
If that be the case - is pricing for servicing and parts (OEM) much the same as an Australian model?

Yup, exactly the same as 350Zs, Maximas run the VQ30. Parts are interchangable (most of them) with the 350z etc as well.

The plan will be set in stone once we find out if the bores are scored by a broken ring or damaged ringland. But in short a OEM spec rebuild, perhaps with forgies depending on the bores. Kuek wants to keep it simple and reliable, not chase power.

Problem is jd, most forgies are 8.5:1 or 11:1 CR, stock is 10.3. From what I've read, the ECUs aren't the most tunable thing unless I went FConV, there is a small tuning box with the vortex but its a bit tricky. So I just want to go close to stock as it isn't running massive boost anyway.
The VQs have weak rings from what I've heard as well, and forcing more air down its throat has lead to this. Hopefully it won't be a nightmare when Josh pulls it apart. And yes I want pics too, only way to see its progress while I'm away haha

Get stronger rod bolts for sure, and possibly think about an oil pump from the later HR motors.
Just in case it is decided that more boost is wanted down the track, as the OEM rod bolts fail at around 400rwhp, and the HR oil pump had the design changed slighty to better suit sustained high rpms.

The point of the rebuild is more to keep it simple, there are many many things Kuek could do to this engine to make it stronger and stronger. Headstuds and Rodbolts are certainly fesable options, but once you go down the upgraded oil pump pathway you may aswell do this and that and this and that. Sending part prices skyward
As Josh said, power isn't my goal, reliability is. If I was chasing any more power, I'd put in cams while the engine is apart and drop the CR to about 9:1 etc etc. Don't want this to get out of hand, just a nice luxo cruiser with a bit of poke.
As is, the auto gbox is having problems handling this kind of power (potential problems anyway), so will need to be strengthened. Thinking of a v/b upgrade and a trans cooler as the next step.

Kuek asked me to take some photos along the way, so no better place to pop them than in here.
I pulled the timing chains off the other day, and then heads, couldnt see obvious scars in the bore, nor melted piston crowns or ping marks. I still had a gut feeling we had piston problems (rather than just re-ring) so i had to make a decision to order some JE 10.5CR's from a contact of mine over east to make his Saturday 10th shipment, the price was comparable from the ebay ones so i jumped and got them ordered for Kuek. Our problems with this motor were confirmed tonight when i pulled #1 from its bore.
Bore is in good order, so will get a light hone done to suit the new pistons, go with some ACL race bearings in STD/STD size. get the heads faced and pressure tested.

If you need any random bolts, cover etc. Let me know. I bought a shagged long motor the other week with the hopes of rebuilding, but it has suffered MASSIVE end float and the block is cactus. Only going to keep the heads and related bits, and turf the rest.
Is that #2 ring land? Thats fucked haha
Shane what are you going to do with the motor now? How many kms on it? I'll see if my valve covers are leaking as I initially assumed but may not be, if they are, keen to sell?

Drivers side bank cover is pissing bigtime Kuek, passenger side not so much.
All the pistons are destroyed, all have cracked ringlands bigtime. On #2 piston the ringlands have collapsed onto the oil scraper ring, i cant even get the rings out, they are completley crushed into the piston

NICE!
That is a decent effort, I wonder what cause a catastrophic failure like that?!?
10.5 CR is pretty high for forced induction, how much boost does it run?
Stock cr is 10.3, most of the shelf pistons are either 8.5 or 11. I think it runs around 10 psi max atm. Will get it on the dyno after its all run im and might drop the boost a little to around 8psi.
Not sure what caused that much damage. Can only assume the vq doesnt like that much boost crammed down its throat
joshg123
14-07-2010, 10:16 AM
Deto has caused this, i think its had a hard life with this charger on it
Hmm.. but wouldnt deto cause the crowns to be fucked? I have a feeling that tune is to blame as well as the 2.73 pulley. Might put the 3.12 back on
ring lands would have a harder time of it than crowns i'd say.
just out of interest, do you know who last tuned it?
As far as i know allstar had a look at it when jai had it back in 08. I have a feeling when the car changed hands, the 2.73 pulley was slapped on. Thats just what i think. Hence going back to 3.12

^^no worries (was just askin since ive just bought an ex c-red car)

It wasnt charged when c-red owned it, so c-red have nothing to do with the deto problem. I dont think you could really fault asg if thats where it went either, its a high comp motor with aftermarket charger, not intended for boost with a unknown piggy back. I think it was probably destined for trouble whichever way you look at it.
Turns out the motor has also been hot, the bore is 5thou out of round. We are unable to use STD size pistons (which means we cant keep standard compression) as once we get the bore square the std JE bore pistons will be slappy as all hell.

how much are VQ37's worth these days?
Just spoke to josh and wanted to clarify it wasnt actually tuned at asg either, just had a run there and some fuel added in.
Change of plans, i'm going with 11:1 CR now as the block needs a rebore. Basically n/a power with a bit of boost. Will put the 3.33 pulley on to run about 5-7psi

what ecu it is running now?
if you are still thinking of running piggy back u better ditch it..
piggy back ecu eats 2 of my old car engine lol
its just not going to work
nice car mate!
The piggy back will work in this case for what i need. Essentially just need to pull back some timing. At lowish boost i even think thats unnecessary but will see what sean says
Lonewolf
14-07-2010, 05:26 PM
high comp build ftw!
i'd expect aftermarket pistons to be a bit more detonation restistant anyway.
Likely the old owner may have just slapped on pulley for more boost without retuning?
what piggy back is on it out of interest?
Its called a FMU that came with the vortech kit. Allows for abit of playing with fuel and timing. Sort of like an safc.
Btw vq37s run stock 11:1 cr and from my brief googling, many are running around with 500+ on stock bottom ends. Not saying that it will last but a lot of high comp + boost combos work with the right fuel and tune. Will have to wait and see what kind of lazy power this will make

Bit of a trade off blake,
If we went 020 over 8.5CR pistons it would be a slug off the line, have good midrange (with a tiny s/charger pulley), and act like a slug once the charger becomes inefficient at high RPM
If we go 020 over 11:1CR pistons, it will be responsive off the line, be prone to detonation in the midrange when the charger is working but keep pulling nicely to redline.
The theory is, 11CR gives us the option of going with a larger (lower boost) pulley if the piggyback doesnt allow for timing to be pulled out where we need it. Or even to remove the s/charger if we have to, with teh 8.5's if we remove the charger it renders this engine undrivable.
AFAIK, the next step ECU wise is a massive undertaking being as the vehicle runs CAN BUS wiring and the engine ECU controls more than a old RB20 haha. ECU needs to talk to Trans and BCM. Only the HKS F-con can do this from what ive been told.
ARP Studs and Genuine gaskets are being used.

Have heard the VQ30DETT ecu can be used with some changes, then you can go down the nistune path.

We are starting to get into the region of what Kuek was Trying to avoid if we do that though, obviously a much safer idea motor wise than a piggy back SAFC.

if it can be made to work thats probably the best bet, keep factory ECU but be able to tune the thing properly.
How much resolution does the FMU have?
Emanage ultimate + plug in harness could be a bit better?
I definitely agree that high comp + low boost is the way to go.
jaybee
14-07-2010, 09:56 PM
imho, only keep the piggy back if it can provide a perfect tune in every area. if detonation will be prone in areas because of the lack of capability of the ecu (which im starting to think is the reason for the engine failure in the first place), ditch it in favour of the f-con..they are a very very good ecu anyway. your already rebuilding the engine, so do it once and do it properly.
Jb engine failure was due to it being untuned, not being unable to be tuned. It prob would have survived without much tuning with the 3.33 pulley but def not with the 2.87

remember that is also a lot harder to tune a high comp turbo than it is a high comp centrifugal supercharger, boost comes on a lot slower.
I'd agree with you however, ECU is where i'd spend the money to do it right in this instance.

If they're a gunmetal grey colour then they're not done yet lol. That's how they were dropped off. Either that or they're still in primer. Post up the pic! You need to get the gutter rash machined out before blasting/coating. Cost me $60 per wheel for 20s.

Kuek these guys make custom spacers, they will ask for thickness, stud pitch, and centerbore size to make them true hub centric.
http://wheelworx.com.au/spacers.html
Be warned they weren't that cheap when I enquired. I ended up getting Ichibas instead, they are also car specific/true hub centric aka matches your standard centerbore so they fit snug with 0 movement.

Build is pretty much finished, bolted the charger on and reassembled radiator and front of car - I wish to stab the man who invented that charger kit.... Its a cool piece of kit but its soooo tight to get anything to fit nicely.
Took it for a bit of a drive, drives nice... Definatly needs to have the decel throttle value brought up if possible, everytime you stop the motor drops to 600rpm and the charger drive cogs make awefull noises. Also some new silicone on the charge pipes as the old ones have seen better days.
I left Kuek a little message for when he picks up the car on Tuesday night.

Well, maybe not all... Invest in some good temp gauges. Oil and Water. I know you only want it as a cruiser, but still, keep a good eye on temps. They get very hot under the bonnet NA. Massively worse once you start forcing air into the motor.

Agree 100%, and id also suggest adding a water level alarm and install it next to the bleed valve on the heater hose. These motors are soooo easy to get a airlock in them and not know about it.
Was just looking at a set of defis... sigh, my bank account does not like me at all atm :(
Josh did the car stall at all just now? Used to stall before when stopped at the lights. Need to get the idle upped

Took it for a bit of a drive, drives nice... Definatly needs to have the decel throttle value brought up if possible, everytime you stop the motor drops to 600rpm and the charger drive cogs make awefull noises. Also some new silicone on the charge pipes as the old ones have seen better days.
If its a V2 SQ they have straight cut gears and are known for their rattly type sound specially at idle

Thats actually not a bad idea at all Josh. I may have to look into it myself.
First time I did a coolant/hose change it took me forever to burp all the air out of the system. Front jacked right up, filling extremely slowly worked wonders the second time though.
