How'd they go with the SS box?

Get some real power, you big fag.

R3N
02-09-2010, 09:14 PM
Need a scanner first so I can put the graph up.

Final figures were 339hp/408nm @ 8.5psi

Funny thing is, the car made 360hp with the old set up running 6.5psi! But Sean had to pull some timing out and chuck more fuel in due to high comp and higher boost. We were baffled by it but it was pretty lean when it last had the run (2 years ago).

Also found out that the dyno run/fuel add was at 6.5psi so somewhere along the line, more boost was added but was never retuned. At least now I know it won't ping itself to death.

There was a lot of fucking around with the SS box, Shane but was sorted out eventually.

Ben go play with your rb20 somewhere else

It is a whole different car to drive now, pulls alot harder throughout the rev range. Overall I'm happy and will enjoy it as it is.

No carbon boot, bank account needs to recover

leaner tune would have made more power, but obviously not as safe!

R3N
03-09-2010, 03:49 PM
Chris I think that's when the bypass valve fully closes and boost starts building, so before that it was all N/A :D Should have get Sean to give me a printout with the boost as well, will go get that another day.

350hp and 440nm... so both :)

not keen on the face shooting though

torque starts at 0, doesnt get good till a little later on though :P

R3N

I meant when does max torque start coming in :p

Damn turbo cars... should go good with the E85 yea? When are you taking it back? Might go get the AFRs from the old tune as that made 360hp/424nm @ 6.5psi. Curious to compare. Mine could do with a little leaning out at 6000rpms onwards but the SS box is really a piece of shit.

Spoke to Sean about Cobb tuning and once he gets his hands on his software, might be very tempting to get the Cobb Access port, basically just plugs into the OBD II port and has switchable maps. Maybe go bigger injectors, de-cat and more boost by then :D

why only a 6000rpm limiter? :(

Dropped in and spoke to Sean about that, its just the dyno reading and actual rpm was slightly off and also at redline it just wants to shift into the next gear. Ahh the joys of tuning auto. Which also explains the blip in the power curve.

Anywho, went down and saw Sean today and got an extra 3hp! He gave me a lower reading graph last week. So I'm currently at 343hp! woot

Also now showcasing some more of Karl's handywork.

Looks like I will be keeping this car for now as I am staying put for the time being. So, time to test a theory I've had for a while. As it stands, the car puts out 343hp @ 8.5psi with the built engine running 11:1 comp, which was slightly disappointing as the it previously put out 360hp @ 6psi. Now, because I am running higher comp (stock is 10.3:1), Sean had to pull some timing out to be safe. My theory is that if I put back the 6psi pulley, timing can be put back in and I should see the same if not more than my current hp. I'm not necessarily chasing more power but want to test my theory. I'm not sure what the AFRs were for the 360 tune but will go and see Sean probably next week to have a chat with him about it.

Piggyback is halfway to the US now to be tested and/or fixed because it was keeping my car in limp mode. I will probably take it back to Sean once I have it back to give it a run to see that everything is still good and possibly a retune at lower boost. Thought I might as well order some "high flow" cats from the US while I'm at it.

Is it possible for cats to become clogged over time? I'm assuming the stock ones in there have had about 100ks use out of them.

Oh, also took it to the drags a couple weeks back. Best run was 13.4. I'm crap at drags and can't get the launch or the shifting of the AT box right. If I don't shift in time before redline, it won't shift at redline because of the lag. But not too fussed, I'm sure I will be able to get it into the 12s sometime.

Did you try leaving it in D for the drags? From what I remember reading, a lot of guys found that D worked better than manually changing. And as for track work... Get a shift kit, and the works bell flappy paddles and give that a try.

R3N
18-12-2010, 03:04 PM
I did think about that but didn't get to try it shane, only got 5 or 6 runs in that night, was packed! will try to leave it in D next time. Do I need to put it into "sport"? I spoke to some people who left it in D but they had shift kits

Ok, so the latest news is that I have sent my piggyback back to the manufacturers, a week later I get an email saying they've tested it and its all working fine, which is surprising and puzzling as I had pretty much narrowed it down to the piggyback being the culprit. So I reluctantly accepted the fact and asked them to send it back so I can do more troubleshooting.

Decided to try and start up the car without the piggyback after talking to some dickhead, so off I went, wiring it back up. Put the battery back on and start it up. Et Voila! Starts up first time and runs perfectly, no limp dick mode! So I am convinced that the piggyback is/was the problem. Back to the fact that my unit was tested and it was working fine. I am even more puzzled. Could it be they missed something? Or could it be the piggyback just playing up? I'm at a point at which I might just bite the bullet and order a new one even though there isn't any explanation, if it works and I can drive it again I'll be happy with that!

Such a nice build. Good to hear you're planning on holding onto it for longer.

Reguarding the piggyback unit a friend had a similar fault with a different unit; manufacturer said no apparent fault but sent a new one back in replacement anyway and all worked fine, manufacturer was still adament that the previous unit still was fully operational...

Hopefully this works out for the best.

Well... a weird thing has happened last Friday, drove the V35 to work and back and to ossy park and took Josh for a quick squirt and back home again and then to a cruise meet point after which I decided to bail and head home. On the way, pulled into a servo to grab a drink, came out, car wouldn't start. Tried giving it some fuel and when it did start would idle very badly. Was diagnosed as a misfire and got the car towed home. I put it down to coilpacks, so pulled them out the next day and inspected, seemd to be fine. Pulled plugs out which were fouled. So got new plugs and put in, car would start and idle badly and was blowing white smoke out of the exhaust, shut her off, and pulled plugs off again which had oil on the tips.

S/C had been leaking oil into the i/c pipes but was very minor and was on my to do list. Should have had the s/c checked out while the engine was out for my rebuild but had an invoice that showed it was rebuilt about a year ago so thought it was good to go.

Anyway, long story short pulled charger out and cleaned up the intake plenums/manifold over the weekend thanks to mitchy, and Antilag's own local courier, monk_13 is going to run it up to MWS and back for me during the week so I can have it back in the car next Saturday and ready for the dyno day on Sunday. LEGEND!

http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/R3N/sc.jpg

I'm still puzzled as to why the car behaved the way it did and gave me no issues whatsoever leading up to it. It was sitting there 3-5 min tops and then decided to not want to play. Will run a can of Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner as per Josh's recommendations to clean up whatever oil residue is in the combustion chamber. Anyone used before?

SK
13-02-2011, 05:59 PM
yeah the upper engine cleaner is great, gets rid of oil and carbon residue which usually helps smooth out your idle and get rid of flat spots.

make sure you read the instructions on the can and dont spray the whole can in at once, it can fill the cylinders and hydraulic lock your engine (i know from experience lol)

yea half can into a warm engine then let stand for 5 mins then start up and remaining half can.

Is that upper engine cleaner from Subaru the seam foam shizen ? Or something like the fortron engine cleaner that mixes in with the engine oil ?

Similar to sea foam but we can't get that here, you spray/let it get sucked into the engine via vacuum hoses

Yeah nar, dont care who does it, fuck taking that chance

Good to hear your on your way to getting it back up and running Kuek, subaru stuff will get rid of the rest. Holden used to make one that was a tad better, but they discontinued it as it was too toxic. I bought the rest of holdens stock once we found out (40 cans or so). Used to clear out the street when you ran a can of that shit through a motor.

This supercharger seems to be causing you more problems then benefits atm...

Lol I thought Brett was pulling the piss but people do actually use water for that, never heard of that before.

Josh, no other problems apart from that, and I know when I got the car what I was getting in to lol. That should hopefully be the end of it and smooth sailings from here. Didn't even get to enjoy my air cond yet!

Have also found that AC Delco do a combustion chamber cleaner (same as the Mopar stuff) but will stick to the suby one.

That should be the end of my spendings for now, 2 regos due at the same time doesn't help :(

Sounds like a very crude method of water injection, which is known for being a good engine cleaner.

mmm remon...

Thanks to a champion effort from Shane, I have my s/c back with all new seals. Spoke to Mark and he says that all the bearings and internals are fine except for the worn seals which resulted in weeping oil.

Just need to address some other issues in relation to how the oil drain is set up and hopefully will be back up running by tomorrow in time for the dyno day on Sunday. So, fingers crossed!

Thought I might update this as everyone else seems to be doing the same and I can't sleep :(

Managed to get everything back together and car running fine in time for the AL dyno day. Was funny when we put everything back together and started it up, was still idling horribly as there would still be some oil deposits in the combustion chamber, so turned it off and took the cog belt off for it to run N/A and not have any parasitic loss from the charger. Held revs steady and after a bit was idling beautifully. Subi Upper Cyl cleaner was used after and worked a treat for what I needed it to do. Its still a fresh motor so wouldn't have much carbon deposits ie. wasn't much smoke coming out from burning up crap which is always a good sign.

All went smooth come dyno day, except we put new belts on all round and it obviously stretched and was squealing like a piggy on the day. Belt slipping = no boost or not much boost at all. Made about 250hp on the roller dyno. Add to the fact I should have pulled the VDC fuse as the car went nuts and ABS and SLIP lights came on during the run so it was never really putting down much power. Never came to mind as you wouldn't have this issue on the hub dyno.

About 6 months ago I had my passenger side window replaced after some pingpingpingping smashed it, had a new window fitted and all was sweet after, except straight after they put the window in, the window didn't want to work. Worked again after a few goes and when I brought it up they assured me that their work had a lifetime warranty and to bring it back if I had any issues. Was having intermittent issues with it after, would go up and come back down and only after I try try and tried would it stay up. Then they day came when it finally died so I took it back to them and explained what had happened, long story short, lots of time wasting and fucking around, I now have a new window motor installed as "good will" from them as it was deemed to have just worn out... funny as I never had any issues before and my driver's side is still working fine.

Apart from that, car is my semi-daily and has not been giving me anymore headaches, although I might retire it to weekend duties to save money on insurance and fuel but it is a tough decision to make as I enjoy driving it day in and out.

Currently working on an air intake that will definitely aid in performance and not limit my options for filters because of lack of space. For those that have seen my engine bay, the pod filter is squashed because there is no way you can take it out without squishing it, and same for putting back in. Will put pics up once I'm done with it. Also waiting on some "high flow" cats and to put them in and go for a retune once the weather cools down a little. That will hopefully free up some more ponies getting rid of the 2 possible restrictions.

Progress is slow, but is still there, slowly fixing up the dodgy issues from previous ownerships.

its funny how so many issues can arise in a car that really isnt that old compared to a lot of our cars. Just goes to show that the previous owners had no idea and didnt give the thing much love. Good to see it now gets uber lovin'!

Yeah it's going back to them on Wednesday so will let you know what the issue was. They don't think it's the rocker cover, instead suspect rings or valve guides. Plugs need to be cooler too.

Yeah, decided to start fresh with a brand new short block. ~12 month build ended last June. It'll be at Powercruise, last part of myQuaife LSD swap arrived today so hopefully can have that in for PC. She'll be on old hard tyres until the Michelin Pilots arrive for some drag launches shortly after.

Full build is over at: http://zclub.com.au/forums/index.php?/topic/5174-my-supercharged-v35/
