That's all for now, car is having idle issues, keeps stalling at idle when the revs drop due to charger, looking into ways of raising the idle. Failing getting Nissan to do it, will be ordering a diagnostic tool from the US and A

jaybee

how much is a diagnostic tool ??

35r rims look awesome! get them on asap please.

AGIT8D
11-08-2010, 01:08 PM
WHY is it stalling due to the charger though? surely the charger doesn't affect the idle revs making them lower.. is it having a vacuum problem somewhere or something? considered running it out to Mark's workshop so he can have a look over it?

SLIPPERY
11-08-2010, 01:14 PM
the chargers gonna be a drain on the crank indirectly so will pull the revs down a little naturally....

does it suffer from the atmo BOV r33 problem aswell?

Lots of good info online for supercharger installs on various engines too.. Generally referring to the MAF, vac leak, IAV etc.

stumps.

I know with the ls1 engines you can increase the idle by increasing the size of the air hole in the throttle body blade.

Can you do this?

I wouldn't think it would pull enough drain when slowing rotation speed to stall out as it would when coming ON boost?

Have you test fitted the 35R wheels yet?
Do they clear everything??

This sums it up the best. Basically when I'm sitting at the lights its fine, but sometimes if I get an idle drop it will dip far enough to stall the car. Lot of the guys in the US have this problem and their solution was to raise the idle. It currently idles at 650rpm but would like to take it up to 750 or even 800. That should solve my problem, already cleaned the AFM and T/B

Idle can only be raised via the ECU using the Consult II diagnostic tool from Nissan or another tool called the UpRev Cipher.

I should probably rephrase and say that it doesn't stall at idle all the time but intermittently, but still enough to drive me crazy and feel embarassed when people keep thinking I'm the one stalling it or sitting at the lights and revving it so it doesn't die.

I've heard of some people drilling the hole larger but I'm not game, rather do it the right way.

Have not test fitted the wheels, they are actually getting redone due to some minor imperfections and also tyres are not here yet!

does the vq35 donk not have a bolt on the throttle body bit where the cable attatch's? if it does couldnt u just adjust that to bring the idle up a tad?

jaybee
11-08-2010, 03:41 PM
i'm guessing it would be a similar problem to say, if you switched your air con on and the car stalls. raising the idle is only a band aid fix and doesnt actually fix the problem.

R3N
11-08-2010, 03:52 PM
No JD not a shitter SR (doesn't sound like a truck :p)

Not a band aid fix, a permanent fix. Not sure on the total workings on a supercharger, but as it is run off the engine, when there is a slight dip in rpms, its enough to bring it down to a stall. Like I said doesn't happen all the time, only intermittently but enough to piss me off.

It's more similar to when you get more aggresive cams I'd say, you need to raise the idle or the car will be constantly stalling in neutral.

jaybee
11-08-2010, 03:55 PM
sorry should have said it a bit better, i meant raising the idle by just adjusting the screw on the idle control valve - band aid fix.

yeah a correct/permanent fix is through the ecu.

Big ups from el'presidente, momma's gon be proud!

Brakes tomorrow, de-wing near future.

Battery died on it today, even though I've been driving it everyday. Took it back to the place where battery was fitted as it was only a few months ago. Found out the previous owner was dodgy as hell and didn't pay off his bills (he got new tranny put in there).

Apparently old tranny was slipping, previous owner went to get it reconditioned and took it back the day after it was done because something was wrong. The guy that owns the place showed me the 1st gear... teeth were missing and the guy found evidence of fresh skids that killed the box right after he picked it up! So got a new box put in and didn't pay off the rest of his bill. Bonus is, I now have what I hope to be an upgraded VB from the old box which I will get checked out and put back in.

Sorting out some boost issues atm, car isn't making any boost in the lower rpm range, haven't hit redline yet so not sure what boost it will hit. Couple of issues to address, have fixed a minor leak where the intake pipe and AFM join, the AFM plastic looks slightly warped ie. no longer flat, but a thicker o-ring has fixed that for now. Still wasn't boosting.

Have adjusted the bypass valve as I can hear air leaking out through it, it's not closing early enough. Will do a proper test tomorrow morning but seems to be making boost slightly earlier. Other possible cause is a loose belt, not sure how tight they should be, but will have a play with the tensioner tomorrow as I have read the belt slipping might be probem here.

Being centrifugal they need lots of revs to boost and with yours only boosting to 6psi means the pulley is larger so it spins slower therefore boost comes on slower and higher in the rev range.

So i'd wait until you can rev it higher before getting to worried.

Took it out for a quick squirt today, still not making any boost in the higher rev range, almost to redline. Boost gauge won't read any positive pressure. Couple things left for me to check up on before I completely go insane. The bypass valve adjustment has somewhat helped. Will retension the drive belt and see how I go, I'm praying its just that.

Be careful about over-tensioning the blower belt. Keep in mind that the belt will be tighter when warm/hot, so it's cold state isn't a true representation.

Too tight a blower belt can/will result in bearings wearing/failing, and general early wear and tear. Best time to check tension is after a drive when the engine is at operating temperature.

yup, gonna tension it right after a drive when in a slightly expanded state. then should be all sweet once cold. is there a guideline to how tight it should be? at the moment, when its cold, you can sort of twist the belt

monk_13
24-08-2010, 11:54 AM
All part of my grand plan!!

But seriously, yeahlow34 speaks the truth. When you got here the other day, belt tension didn't seem to bad whilst I was disconn... I mean having a look around.

First things I would be doing IMO would be to get a new air filter, as that squashed up thing would be restricting flow a lot. And put that boost gauge on another car to see if it is working and/or get a new one. Eliminate the simple things first, then delve deeper if there is still a problem.

My thoughts lie with a slightly popped cooler pipe, engine will still run fine with one popped. Silicones are about a inch too short and the hose clamps have to sit right on the end of the silicones.... not really ideal to seal. Perhaps some road vibrations has upset this. Kuek, you could just run some soapy solution around the pipes and see if they bubble, as the charger still develops positive airflow at idle (as you noticed with that air flow meter o-ring).

Id try that first. If the engine is running fine off boost and at idle you can eliminate any of that intake plenum or throttle body area as it would behave all silly if you had a air leak there. Its got to be either charger or somewhere between charger and throttle body. Soapy solution is your friend here.

Don't worry too much how loose it is when it's cold. This doesn't matter really, as it's the operating temperature tension you want to get right. But for arguments sake, it should be fairly easily twisted when cold.

To give you an idea, the supercharger belt on my hotrod (at max operating temperature, i.e fully warmed up) has approximately 1-2cm movement. So for example, when you pull it, you can get approximately 1-2cm of movement from static position. This effectively is the 'tightest' the belt will run.

Different type of supercharger application I know, but you get the idea. Assuming your setup is tooth, I would suggest similar tension.

In that case the belt would have the correct tension. Narrowing it down to boost leak or fucked boost gauge. Need to borrow a boost gauge to test. Hit 5psi on the gauge last night at close to redline. Pretty difficult to watch tacho, speedo and boost gauge at the same time lol

Isn't it only a 6psi pulley? Or are you saying that in the mid range it was not even on 5psi? You need to borrow my Fat Gecko and camera, set it up on the window and go run some trials so you can watch footage.

The pulley that's on there should be making 8-9psi. Nope not even 5 psi in the mid range. Yup bypass shuts when you go on hard throttle. Have adjusted it slightly so it closes earlier

Now... couple of updates...

Went to see Karl and got the headlight overlays put on. How a person who is so critical of one's use of the English language can be so skillful with a knife is beyond me, or is that totally intentional?

Crappy pics as it has gone dark while I was playing with the suspension
http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/R3N/headlight2.jpg

Also lowered the rear all the way down, it is currently sitting just above the tyre which gives it a much better stance.

Now, boost issues... hooked up the gauge I borrowed from Tocchi, turns out I AM boosting (FUUUU supercheap gauge) and hit about ~5psi at 4k rpmish. Didn't take it much higher as I was in traffic all day. Will try a better run later. Either that or Tocchi's gauge is also broken and I need to borrow another :p Previously, I did have a feeling I was boosting anyway but obviously didn't know how much.

And also tensioned up the belt a little more, but haven't taken it for a drive since, expecting boost to come on much earlier now (going to replace the belts on there anyway just to be on the safe side)

Awesome boost gauge install as well:

Definite yes on that bootlid... wouldn't hack the front bar too much personally...

I'd investigate moving the FMIC to one side and match it with a tranny or oil cooler on the other?

Or another possibilty, is to see if the twin coolers from the Jim Wolf twin turbo kit will fit in there somehow. Although I think from memory, it requires some cutting of the radiator support.

Get some centre caps for the rims!

Will make it look factory and clean it up a fair bit!

Not a fan of chopping up anything, its a tight fit behind there. A side mount would be better though.

I can run more boost with my high comp pistons :D

Been looking for a set but no luck. Wonder if I can get generic blank ones.

Pete, they're great, as good as the brembo set up I had before. Weight wise, compared to the brembos, they're not a whole lot heavier either.

I know a guy, who's dad just purchased an R35. For a decent amount of cash, i could acquire his centre caps for you.

how can you run more boost with high comp pistons?

i thought the higher in compression you go the more prone you are to pinging/detonation.

running higher comp would help a turbo car over come lag however?
