View Full Version : Travel Insurance
Going o/s in about 7 weeks, trying to get myself organised.
Never travelled before, but figure I should look into this incase I have a tj trademark diabetic coma in bali and end up being treated by a vet with unclean knife and fork.
So - recomendations?

When i went to turkey, i did mine through the travel agent, cost me $350 covered 5G's for camera gear and 2.5G for laptop aswell as hospital fee's and other benefits.
Are you a HBF member?
If so you'll get a discount off your travel insurance.. ours to go to the USA for a month was under $300 for both of us.
No travel agent here.
Probably get my laptop and camera covered buy more worried about health side of it.

i went with world nomads when i went around the world last year (pretty cheap) i got sick in NZ and had to pay doc bills which got all back.
next time i would get myself a platinum credit card who gives good reward points and free travel insurance tho...
Lol not interested in another credit card just got rid of one!
Thanks though
www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au used them before for bali
Going with HBF this time, $165 for 10 days 'Super' cover for 2 people
Just make sure you make them aware of your condition TJ, they may not cover you if you dont.
Yeah Tyson definitely.
Brett thanks!
Cheaper than I assumed but I presume I'll cop some fee on top due to illness.
Bretts site says 39 bucks for the week. Wow that doesn't sound right.

Chubb.
ACE Insurance.
Two biggest travel insurance players from my broking days... i dealt alot with their claims so have faith.
Check with your Union. Mine ( CFMEU ) does free Travel Insurance for you and your spouse.
All I had to do is ring them up, tell them I'm going away and they sent me some paperwork.

Union?!?
WTF would anyone want to be part of them for? I guess you vote labour as well
Thanks marbles even though it has nothing to do with travel insurance.

It is right TJ, it's underwritten by Alliance so all kosher. You can see what is and isn't covered before you pay.
*nb i have used them but never had to make a claim, and as we all know they are only as good as their claims process.
Id probably ring them first and let them know that im diabetic.
Regardless, even if that was 100 bucks I'd be happy.

With some Banks, if you have a Gold credit card and buy the tickets with said card, you get 3 months or so free travel insurance.
I got it a few years ago with my cba goldcard
Worth checking out

I used same website also, more than once, got insurance for under 10 days for about 40-50ea. I think if you stay over 7 or 10 days it goes up??

bumping old thread,
anyone else have anything to add?
off to Japan next month for skiing. Was set on travelinsurance direct however although 400 or so positive reviews on one site, the reviews posted by people who actually tried to make/made claims arent so promising.
understand no insurance company is going to make it easy come claim time but hopefully theres some easier then others....
Lets be honest.. no matter how covered you think you are with insurance you are still going to get fucked in the ass.
either way, Bali hospitals > Perths

I used medibank travel insurance when I went to Malaysia for 10 days. ~130 for 2 of us - gone up since then. Made a claim as laptop somehow fried itself and even though the process was painfully long (claim took 1 month from day it was lodged, initially said it'd only take 14 days), they did pay out.

Be very careful what you are covered for. I chipped a tooth and dislocated a shoulder in Japan contacted them regarding it before I returned. The insurance would cover no costs in Australia. Shoulder required surgery to fix. So if you tripped on the plane and broke your ankle on the way home, you are fucked.

I used travelinsurancedirect.com.au for a 365 day period, cost $750, covered camera gear up to $5k for a body and lens, and up to $10k for electrical items in total.
Made one claim towards the end of the trip for a stolen camera, iphone, wallet and 2 passports. They covered all the electrical stuff -15% for depreciation and covered the total cost of replacing both passports with express service.
It was fairly hassle free ordeal I would definitely use them again.

I always just buy 1 cover medical only the day before I fly. cost $160 for 3 months in Europe with 10% off.
think it was about $250 for full cover but last time I was fully covered and my shit got stolen in Estonia despite having a police report apparently it needed to be officially translated before they would accept it and I could claim the shit so didnt even bother.
