View Full Version : Licensing an unregistered trailer
Hi everyone,
I've got a small 6x4 trailer that my grandfather gave to me before he passed away.
It's unregistered and I will be taking it to the pits next week for registration.
My question is, what paperwork needs to be filled in?
None of the paperwork I can find on the DPI site is suitable.. all of them ask for registration details, of which there are none.
I can't exactly transfer ownership either.
Any ideas? I need to sort this out asap because I know whats going to happen.. I'll rock up to the pits, I won't have any paperwork, and the gimps working there will tell me to go away until I can come up with something.

ring an inspection centre?
I'd rather not speak to the inbreds that work there..

Go to the licensing centre and speak to the inpectors directly. They will let you know exactly what you need.

I imagine for a simple trailer you should just be able to fill in a new vehicle license form, put down a value of the trailer, pay stamp duty and license fee and walk away.
if they ask for a receipt, just tell them it was free due as u inherited it. they will just want a dollar value for stamp duty purposes, so cheaper the better for u.
All new trailers built after a certain date now have to have a vin. i think it was braught in a few years ago.
i registered my car trailer a few months ago and it was a pain in the ass what i had to go through to get it registered.
trailer was built for free by my mates business, so it had a vin plate etc. licensing wanted a receipt (of which there was none) so i just made one up, and got the workshop super to sign at a nice low dollar figure so i didnt get raped by stamp duty.
Although I own the trailer, officially its still my grandfathers (as he never transferred it with the DPI).. which means its now my grandmothers. All well and good to get a receipt from the official owner of the trailer, but it was registerd previously so they're going to ask for all sorts of shit indicating where it was transferred I'd assume.
I thought I'd try my luck ringing the pits and after 20 mins on hold, they told me they will need a copy of the Death Certificate and a stat dec from the Executor of the Will..
When I told them that the Will has not been registered with the Supreme Court due to the current Executor being a spouse, and therefore no Probate number being issued and therefore making the DPI Stat Dec form obsolete (as it asks for a Supreme Court issued Probate number), they now "have to get back to me" as they have no idea.
I think I'll just fill in a transfer of ownership form, but what do I put where it says "vehicle registration"? There is none!

not sure if its the same deal with cars, but if it was previously registered and expired, all you need is a receipt/letter to prove you own it, and it just goes for a new registration, not a transfer.
Good idea.. I'll get my grandmother to sign a letter and I'll attach a copy of the death certificate.
Hopefully that will be enough.

Do you still have the old plates?
Was it originally registered in WA?
Just hand in the old plates, get a letter from your Grandma stating that she is giving it to you as a gift (include her full name, address, trailer VIN if available and get her to sign it) and then just get a temp 48hr permit to cart it to the pits.
Once it passes, you'll then supply the letter and it'll be issued new plates under your name.
The plates were handed in years ago, and it was originally registered here.
I've drafted up a letter so we'll see how I go.
Cheers for the help :)

the pits dont look at trailers anymore i believe. i had to take mine to a local inspection place in rockingham where they did the inspection/paper work.
then i took a copy of the passed paperwork in with the other licensing form.

If it hasn't got a "chassis number" on it... stamp one
I used my drivers licence number
That and a stat dec to say its yours... or the other paperwork your getting from nana will be enough

Osborne Park does but only unbraked ones.

quite easy dude my grandfather only just done the same recently and is about to do it again with another trailer, All you need to do is provide satisfactory evidence showing it is yours, then you sign a stat dec stating that... then it gets licensed
