THE US Navy has a raygun - and it's a big one.

In a red-letter week for the US military, its Naval Sea Systems command "successfully tracked, engaged, and destroyed” several unmanned aircraft with its Laser Weapon System, otherwise known as LaWS.

....

According to The Register, "it represents the first Detect-Thru-Engage laser shoot-down of a threat representative target in an over-the-water, combat representative scenario".

LaWS is fitted to the Navy's "R2-D2" robotic gun turret and looks every bit like what you'd expect a raygun to look like.

In normal operations, R2-D2 would support the Navy's Phalanx 20mm cannon, which automatically locks onto incoming missiles and blasts them out of the sky.

Unfortunately for anyone in the impact zone, that ususally results in a shower of shrapnel or the 20mm shell itself if it fails to explode.

The LaWS system simply vapourises the target.

Naval spokesman Captain David Kiel said the success test "validates the military utility of (rayguns) in a maritime environment".

"Further development and integration of increasingly more powerful lasers into Surface Navy LaWS will increase both the engagement range and target sets that can be successfully engaged and destroyed," he said.

I had Dino Riders toys, awesome. *sniff* :')

Ray guns are also awesome. Reminds me of a doco where the military heat up a guy behind a matress and other objects. Some sort of crowd dispersion heat gun weapon.

ZAP ZAP POW!

Meh, you can make your own using a Star Trek toy gun and a laser from a blue ray player. Capable of popping balloons from a distance.

You cant import more than 1mw laser into the country. Ask anyone who has tried to bring one back into the country

All because some dumb pingpingpingpings couldnt stop pointed them at aircraft landing

I wonder how efficient are they at stopping every single laser that comes into the country? I guess the xray people would pick them up very easily.

http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/LaserPointers.pdf

What if the person over in Hong Kong or wherever rips off the label on there which states how many mW the laser is before packaging? :)

Not worth it. I tried ordering a high power green laser last year. Shop labeled it as electronics parts and it was built into a flashlight as not to look like a laser pointer, and when it never arrived i started getting concerned. Instead I get a hand delivered package stating what a bad boy I've been and a warning saying if I ever try it again I'll cop a fairly decent fine for whatever it is plus the one they are letting slide. From what I've seen on doco's etc every piece of mail is checked upon entry to the country, altho I do find that hard to believe.

I got one through from wicked lasers (wickedlaser.com) was a 60 mW I think, fricken powerful, could easily see it bouncing off the windows at ob city from my parents place in Sorrento. Not cheap though!

Not cheap though!I've been seeing ads for those things for years... I've always wondered how difficult would it be to mod one to push more power through the diode?
I don't know how diodes are made, but surely you'd be able to squeeze another 10-20mW out of a diode of good build quality like a Wicked Laser... because that's basically what you're doing with those modding-a-blueray-diode lasers.
