Are you planning to relocate the igntion coils once you put the turbo in? They tend to melt on their own let alone with a turbo next to them.

Will the external wastegate be able to control the boost properly with it only really coming off one bank of extractors and not the other side at all?
H1GHROLLR
03-06-2010, 03:58 PM
hhhmmm i dunno proberly not lol
Should be close enough to the join to dump enough pressure
H1GHROLLR
03-06-2010, 08:06 PM
i had a look at the manifolds and the part where the 2 pipes merge does not have a center, if it makes sense the gas's from each bank flow into each other and up to the flange also

gas pressure works evenly in all directions, on this theory you shouldnt have a problem with the location of the waste gate.

nice project should be interesting to see the results
just curious will the paint (or whatever you used) on the cooler insulate it and reduce cooling efficiency?
and how will a 20 year old engine not built for a turbo hold up?

lol im thinking it wont hold up too well :p to build a new motor with forgies and good bearings etc wont be any more then 3k so i reackon shove boost through this until it spits it then run a built motor

Mark, bombed VN. Will be quick when done. Surprise a few pingpingpingpings at the lights for sure. Gona be faster than mine :( I bet it will
should of done this to my vp but i sold it
No offense man but your VP =/= mark's VN. Nowhere even close. From the pics I saw, yours needed like 4k worth of work to even look like a tidy VP, and even when that's done it's my belief that once a car is fucked out in the body, it stays that way no matter how good it gets painted.
H1GHROLLR
05-06-2010, 06:23 PM
sam this boosted buick bunky pingpingpingping wont get any where near yours , UNLESS i adjuste all the stops on your rip shifter so you miss like 4 gears :p

Well regardless of whose is fastest I reckon they're both gona be FUCKING FUN to drive, and we will spin pingpingpingpings out in twin VNs lol.

07-06-2010, 02:36 PM
much better, coolers hanging out are gay.
What brand of manifolds are those?
Seems that some manifolds for turbo Buick 3.8 conversions have the turbo sitting sideways at the front like that, and others have the turbo in the corner of the engine bay on an angle.
This setup seems a lot neater with less piping!
mitchy
07-06-2010, 02:49 PM
are there any brackets that support the turbo off the engine?
i've always wondered how these manifolds go having a turbo hanging so far away from the mounting point.
H1GHROLLR
07-06-2010, 02:55 PM
hey guys cheers for comments
BALISTC: to be ohnest dude im not sure what brand they are im pretty sure a guy over east realised a few kits that he built
MITCHY: nah there are no brackets, its something i was thinking about too although the dump pipe may add a little more support ?, any how its pretty easy to add in a support from near the waste gat to rad support i would think

probably sag down slowly over time til it hits the drive belt, but plenty of limiter fun before then :D
any how its pretty easy to add in a support from near the waste gat to rad support i would think
piss easy but probably not a good idea :p since turbo will move as engine twists on mounts, rad support won't let it. You could hard mount your engine, and use the whole engine-turbo arrangement as a massive front end stiffener :p
mitchy
07-06-2010, 03:47 PM
i think you'll find it will crack, as opposed to sagging.
best idea would be to brace it off the engine itself.
H1GHROLLR
07-06-2010, 03:55 PM
dduurrrrrr i compleatly forgot about engine moving :p unless solid mounts FTW
i might make up something at work that braces from engine to just underneath turbo flange

as people have mentioned before its the shit single sided positioning, if you get it modded to take gas from both sides it can control boost better .
Someone said something about flow and being equal an shit, you'd think that reading it from a book, but in reality its not often correct and it fails a lot in turbo gate control , you need to be able to dump gas from all of your pipes not half of them .
Boost spiking will continue for as long as you use that setup you have.
also you have the vac/boost line going to the bottom of the gate port, and is it being taken from a manifold source and not from intercooler pipes ?
These are my theories so no offence to anyone or these may not be taken as gospel haha disclaimer
Also have you had the wategate apart to see if its got a split diaphragm ? , just undo the top of it and see what it looks like
edit, that gate is plenty big enough for a v6 taxi pac donk :)
H1GHROLLR
22-06-2010, 05:41 PM
its definatly opening its a 38mm gate and only a t3/t4 turbo should be fine ?
boost leak hhmmm this would be to do with one of the silcon joiners etc yeah?
one of the joins is definatly a bit scetchy ?
sorry for stupid qustions as i said before im very green on boost
beefcake
22-06-2010, 05:44 PM
no if you had a leak it would go down or stabilise, you dont have leek problems as it keeps going up an up
edit, its not a stupid question if you dont know, its only stupid if you should know but ask haha

hey mate cheers for your help the vac to the gate is running off the manifold into the side port of the gate, as before it was into the bottom port and was not working at all, if i got for a smaller spring say 6 psi and use a controller which i am not running at present will this limit spike or will it just keep climbling and climbing ? will it even out at some psi or keep rising until my taxi donk and turbo remove them self from my engine bay through the bonnet ?

22-06-2010, 05:54 PM
it should even out somewhere but but the street is a shitty way to find out, needs to hit the dyno for safety sake .
Ive seen your setup before on different engines and they all have spike issues but you can tune around them.
You should be trying to find the brand of your gate and seeing what they recommend for gate boost control, most universally tell you to send the vac line to the bottom port on your gate, and if you send the signal to the top port it tries to gain the most boost the system can develop .
Running no boost controller is not a problem in your case as your not trying for big boost and heaps of power, running just gate spring pressure should work, its just something in your setup/combo is not right yet

it should even out somewhere but but the street is a shitty way to find out, needs to hit the dyno for safety sake .
Running no boost controller is not a problem in your case as your not trying for big boost and heaps of power, running just gate spring pressure should work, its just something in your setup/combo is not right yet
ok just an idea what if i tee'd off the vac line a run vacs to both ports ? would this do anything ? or am i better of trying to just make it work with the bottom port ? it was hooked up like that yesturday and it wouldnt even open gate for some reason ?

update*boost spike issues now sorted ,turns out i had a very dodgy spring in there, replaced with a genuine TIAL spring today and boost is staying settled and gate is open properly etc , i can now actually use 100% throttle compared to the 50% before, boost is set low at the moment till i get a controller, but the car feels pretty quick for a bog stock bunky an the boost comes on so quickly, just what i wanted for a daily driver have a few tiny issues to sort tomorrow but nothing crazy, on another note i installed my walbro gss341 today also , very easy job and no modifying needed . . .

yeah man at the end of the day it is what it is lol a VN, those videos were like 60% throttle, today i actually got to use 100% throttle an it pulls very very well for a stocker with a tiny turbo on im stoked with it, i was never chasing numbers or massive skids etc just a clean work car with a bit of kick in its bum :) cheers for your comment
