We get over 100 new users registered every day, most of which are spammers.

When a moderator has time to approve a bunch of them they will. In some cases this can be a few days / up to a week.

Your problem is the image verification and having an old style VB, 3.6.x is well out date.

Change the image verification to a question. For bots the image verification is easy to get around, but an actual question makes it hard.
