View Full Version : Coolant alternative?

Just wondering if anyone uses products other than coolant in their daily?

Seeing as coolant greatly reduces the cooling efficiency of water and we dont get below freezing temps here i really dont see the benefit of using it apart from the corrosion inhibitors.

Any reasons not to use something like water wetter on an every day basis? Way i see it increased cooling efficiency = cooler cylinder temps = less detonation = potential for more power and it has corrosion inhibitors built in so best of both worlds

Have I missed anything here or are products like water wetter just greatly overlooked?

Water wetter normally is used in conjunction with a decent coolant product.
Coolant generally has a higher boiling point than water(distilled) which is why it is used instead.

Cooling systems are designed to work at certain temps. If you have coolant that is cooler but still has the same restrictions ie water pump, radiator and thermostat than the block is going to be colder. This makes your combustion than less efficient.

coolant only raises boiling point a few degrees, usually to about 106degc the big factor is the pressure the cooling system is under which raises boiling point like 20degc

thermostat opens at around 76degc, if your coolant reaches boiling point at around 120degc you have other problems

as for the block being colder afaik it will enable you to run leaner AFR's to increase the temp back to operating efficiency (and for more power without knocking)

but im no tuner so this is just all shit ive picked up over the years

Be aware water wetter has no antifreeze, which leaves open the possibility of possible cracking the radiator or block (if you run it only with distilled water) on very cold days/mornings.

IMO you're trying to reinvent the wheel, just run good coolant like oem toyota and add water wetter for track days if you need additional cooling.

no eythl glycol if you have an alloy or aluminium parts in your configuration

that shit is the worst, let it sit for a while and watch it start eating your water pump seals and car cancer will be rife.

the toyo red stuff is a must have for toyotas as learned, especially if they have that spaz type of water pump (forget the type now its been a while) and is worth the extra monies.

what do you recommend for an alloy rad poopian?

i dont want my bling PWR rad to rust to pieces in the garage. :(

Distilled Water and Anti Corrode additive. Changed every 20k's or every year.

seriously

toyota fanboy aside.... toyota red is possibly the best fucking shit you can buy for your cooling system, mix 50/50 with distilled water and your set.

it even fixes / reseals weak waterpump/cooling system seals , or anything with a very minor leak, instead of pissing out on the ground , its able to slightly seal!

no joke.

the 14 had cooling issues from day 1 since ive owned it, and it got to the point where the heater core got blocked up and thus the heater wouldnt work on cold nights. Then i started using toyo red with distilled water as a 50/50 mix after about 3 days with the stuff the heater core had unblocked itself and thus a working heater. oh yeh also use it in the white car too :P
