FORMER child actor Gary Coleman has died aged 42.

Coleman, who rose to fame as Arnold Jackson on the American sitcom Diff'rent Strokes, had been in a coma after suffering a head injury in a fall earlier this week.

He died at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo where he was taken from his home in Santaquin, about 55 miles south of Salt Lake City.

On Thursday afternoon, Coleman slipped into unconsciousness and was placed on life support, according to his manager John Alcantar. He said Coleman had suffered a brain hemorrhage.

The actor is survived by his wife, Shannon Price, whom he met on the set of the movie Church Ball and married in 2007.
