POLICE have charged four people - including two P-plate drivers - after two street racing events overnight.
The first race occurred on Mandurah Rd, Secret Harbour, at 11pm last night, when police followed and pulled over two vehicles racing at speeds of up to 160km/h in a 100km/h zone.
As a result a 32-year-old Karnet woman was charged with reckless driving and a 20-year-old Warnbro man, who was on P-plates, was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Both cars were seized and will be held for 28 days under the hoon legislation.
At 1.30am today, in Padbury, Hillarys police pulled over two high-performance Club Special Holden Commodores which were racing at speeds up to 158km/h on the northbound lanes of the Mitchell Freeway.
A 23-year-old P-plate driver was charged with reckless driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level in excess of 0.02. It was his second hooning offence.
A 32-year-old man was also charged with reckless driving and both cars were seized.

Yeah, the freeway is the safest stretch of road in the state.. And for instance the new Forrest Hwy section is built to Euro motorway specifications.. i.e. 130-160kph speeds. The 100kph section is a joke, and most modern cars are designed to sit comfortably at 130 and over.
However, good work to the cops picking off the drunk drivers, but they need to do it properly. Fine them, and then two in the head and one in the chest.

I just don't see why they should break the law for something as simple as speeding. I am sure another Police car can intercept the vehicle in question?
I understand they should be pulled over - I just don't see it as a circumstance where the Police need to break the law.
Freeway should be at least 130km/hr - but that 80km/hr zone would be a big issue.

If someone just broke the law, they need to tend to it as fast as possible, they are not going to pussy foot around to look where they can turn around. People winge they are not out there catching people breaking the law and then people winge they have to break a couple of road rules to do so, especially when they do it safely.

Understandable - but there are more heinous crimes to attend to than someone doing 10km/hr over the limit. IMO.
And there have been plenty of times I have seen a cop car approaching a set of traffic lights, and bang, lights and siren, pass through the red light, and turn it off 200m past the lights. This, while increasing speed and then decreasing it once they pass the lights - not right is it? Abusing the power much?

The exemptions Police have on the road exist for a reason. The most obvious is that every car on the road in a district has an average of 3 jobs to attend per hour on a busy night. Response times even for jobs that don't require a priority 1 or 2 still matter.
I'd like to know why people have an issue with Police contravening traffic laws while they are operational.

Shit late at night before (3-4am) i have driven thru red lights on deserted streets, always slowing down and checking both way first mind you doesnt mean i shoot every red light in peak hour traffic.
Ppl seem to be getting hung up on police breaking the road rules while on duty, u'd be fuming if there was some one in ur house with family all bailed up and the cops couldnt get there when asked why and they replied " oh sorry we could find a designated U turn area".
Cops off duty still have to obey the road rules a guy from works who's x was a cop got castrated one day by 2 TEG cops from another station cos she shot an orange light. Reported to her superiors and everythin.

regardless if it was a quiet area or not, i still fail to see why they do it? im not perfect myself but i can def say ive never run a red when the road is deadset clear in the middle of the night. yeh if theres a a job that ciomes thru on the radio, ok fine lights go on and you do what you have to to get to the job, its justified. but if its not so important, why do it? if off duty cops have to obey road rules, why dont on duty cops? do you see ambos, firies, rac, security guards do it?
You do know that some jobs dont require them to have lights and sirens the whole way, but still may need them to get there a little faster than just sitting at set of lights for 30 seconds?
in the middle of the night there is no way a set of lights will stay red for 30 seconds. traffic light intersections have different setups for different times of day/types of traffic. ie during the day on say albany hwy and kelvin road, there are no right turn lights, which go on at peak hour both morning and afternoon, as well as midday for a certain period of time. at night, competely different story, if you pull up to the lights and no one else is there, i can bet that you will wait there a maximum of ten seconds. obviously a high priority job will see cops clockin big speeds, lights and sirens blazing, (ie break in) and low priority jobs (ie noise disturbance at 11pm) probably not so much.
obviously it doesnt happen all that often, but surely they should be settin some sort of example in regards to road rules? ok so im not goin to ask a cop whos just pulled me over for runnin a red light "why do you do such things?" but if the cops are following the road rules, would people be complaining?
I had no idea traffic lights had different settings for peak and off peak. Who would have thought. And yes, some lights will still take 20-30 seconds to cycle over at night.
I have seen it happen maybe 4 times in my life, passenger and driving - and unless you know what they were up to you have no right to question it.
i do agree with you tj, i wouldnt question a cop in regards to anythin of the sort, id rather not cop a licky or a fine. its not a big deal in comparison to a lot of things, but shouldnt on duty cops be following the road rules unless theres a job on?

Winner.
Just because a job hasn't been given urgent driving priority, doesn't mean they can take their time. It depends on the circumstances and the task at hand.

Setting examples is for mum and dad. The Police do follow the road rules and you can bet they face tougher penalties than a normal road user if they cannot justify their actions. There are many exemptions however depending on what they are doing.
not saying they always disobey the rules, as mentioned before, ive only seen it once, cant say ive seen other cops break road rules. purely commentin on what ive seen, and it didnt look right.

Jealousy I suspect.
I know several guys that are police, including a good mate of mine that recently joined. My attitude has changed over the last 5 years, the bottom line is don't whinge if you're caught doing something illegal. Also, develop a good understanding of the law; it will help you defend yourself if required.
You might complain if they do a U-Turn and use there lights and sirens as part of that turn, but I tell you what, if it's your family they are attending to because some drug fucked idiot has broken into your house and threatening to kill someone, you'd let them do what ever it takes to attend to your distress call.
jealousy? as if. i dont whinge if im caught doin somethin illegal, cop it on the chin, if i got caught for it i deserve to cop it. ive got a good understanding of the law also. after losin my license twice for dumb shit, ive learnt my lesson.
do you really think they would do a u turn, with lights on and then turn them off if they had to go to a distress call? highly doubt it. im no einstein but theyd have their lights on the whole way.

got that part right. If it is a lower priority job they will not have lights on the whole way, only time they will put them on is to get through congestion. ie traffic lights, U turns etc.

You can whinge and moan, but at the end of the day, you can;t do anything about. Go give them a ticket for doing an illegal u turn if you dare :)
Think first, was it a traffic cop who did the 'illegal' driving, or was it a useful cop who was going to attend to a burglary, domestic dispute or other real crimes. If it's the latter, shut up. If it's the former, well, we already know they're assholes, no one likes them so no point having a whinge stating the obvious!
well going by the fact that he turned his lights off, wouldnt think it would be a crime. at least not a high priority one. not whingin n moanin, just wantin to find out what gives?

Fair enough, your not jealous. Yes, I really do think they would turn the lights on, then off, depending on the type of priority they're given. Especially when doing U-Turns at traffic lights and stops signs etc.
Basically they're given a lot of discretion for their job. Here's a tip; you want the ability to do the same, join up :) If you don't like what they've done, note the time, date, vehicle rego and vehicle call sign and report it to the district office.

Try Stock road South st lights @ 2 am i have often waited
3 to 4 minutes as those lights are not at the moment on south st priority so if you pull up as it has just gone red you have to wait til it goes through the whole cycle of right arrows straight through then back to where you are to get a green light
