Anyone into kayaking and know any decent places to float around on the swan?

Preferably some cool shit to paddle through like snags and what not, and ideally some good places to fish from a yak.

Nothing to insane, i.e strong currents, rapids and shit yet as I only picked mine up yesterday.

Mods if this is too close a topic to the fishing thread, pls delete/etc etc etc.

Bream fishing in Shelley at the old jetty (can see the old wooden pilons sticking out the water).

Use to paddle form Rossmoyne to Point Walter but I wouldn't really say that there was and real 'cool shit' to see - did it more for the fitness.

Kayaking? gah, kayakers annoy me! haha. Guaranteed every time we're out training on the swan, some kayaker wanders into our line when we're rowing. However from what I see a lot of kayakers like the area around Point Walter down to Alfred Cove past the reach. Most of that area is sheltered by the cliffs and the water is usually nice and flat because of it. Perfect for rowing....... :D

Haha I'll make sure I stay away from everyone else as to not display my noob paddling haha.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.

If you see me going around in circles cause I have a left bias paddle then feel free to come give me a hand haha

back in the day went on a footy team wind-up thing, where we all paddled from kent st weir to shelley bridge. (heading down stream on the canning)

was pretty interesting, took a couple hours from memory. a few crusiy bits, then some find-your-way thru-a-maze bits. probably some secluded spots along the way that no-one really fishes too often as well.

Just a thought guys,

Are there any areas I should be wary of due to high speed traffic on the river?

And for night paddling, are there any requirements such as a Hi-Vis Vest + Light or something or other?

Definitely need a light. Either on your helmet/head or on the bow of your craft. Water cops will fuck you 2 weeks from sunday if you don't and afaik it's on the spot fines aswel

I used to do sprint kayaking for WAIS back in the day - one of the best sports out there and something I wish I never left - but going on the swan river there are heaps of places you can go to. Head down to Ascot (near the Garret Road Bridge) and head off from there left or right - some very nice areas to be seen either way. Going left leads you towards Burswood and right up towards some wineries etc. from memory.

I should head back on the water sometime myself really.

Can launch at shelley bridge boat ramp and paddle up a far distance.
I used to live in wilson and take the canoe from here up to mount henry.
hasnt been too rainy so the water should still be salty and some bream around.

13kms? should be able to sleep through that, fuck, my training sessions are longer.
Again though, can't stress how calm the waters are around point walter and black wall, sheltered and smooth. Some nights/mornings get out there on the water and it's like glass.

I was thinking about hitting black wall/point walter/fresh water etc as its quite sheltered behind the spit and respective areas. Definately going to go for a paddle tomorrow morning around shelly as mentioned as long as the rain stays the fuck away haha.

Btw are those skirt things advisable to buy?

And is a PFD mandatory?

Skirt things as in around the cockpit of the Kayak? You can buy them. :)

Ocean kayak and cosy paddle round the river not same. We've got kayaks at work I use to rip around the canals of Mandurah in and it's a breeze compared to heading out thru the head in Augusta and paddling out, down the coast, then 180 and back up. Going to be getting punished by waves/breeze/etc. Am not looking forward to it, still trying to come up with ways of bailing but it's a work thing

Wait till summer and hit up collie river, lauch from wellington dam and enjoy a bit of whitewater, or wait for another few weeks and Avon might have a little bit of flow. Im in with a few mates to try a section of avon tomorrow after the rain today, but that will be in a playboat, not my multisport!

Good place to launch for some nice paddling would be the belmont ski area, and go east through the little conservation area and out near garret bridge, then hook a left and go back via the main river.

Ive been informed that Ocean Kayaking is the real shit. Smooth water is apparently far more 'pleasant'... no less painful though in the long run im sure.

Kayaking i could get down with. Like the one man per vessel idea. More than one man in a boat without a motor or sail is teh queer.

Yeah ocean kayaking is fun! But make sure you either know how to roll or get back on in open water if you in a kayak and more than a few hundred metres off shore!

Hahahaha yeah I don't know how to eskimo roll. The kayaks we have at work are more like wave ski's, big fat ass wide things. Means you need to paddle hard to get up any pace.

I think work is going to buy us 2 sleek sit ON ocean kayaks as opposed to the sit in ones so I won't need to learn an eskimo roll, but I will def need to learn how the fuck to get back on one when I get belted by waves.. Check out the anaconda challenge in augusta if you want more details on it - it includes a 13km run/hike, 30km mountain bike, 2km swim and the paddle, then the team groups after the bike ride and everyone runs 2km over the line together.. And yes, some people do the event solo

an awesome kayak is the (fin gizmo fisher, or vision) brilliant to fish off, very stable ezy to manover and fun in the surf! comes with anchor rod holders and waterbotle holder, iv spent up to 6hrs on the yak in 1 day and is very comfortable! are people keen to go 4 a bream session around ascott waters some time in summer?
