Hey everyone i bought a 180sx tonight with an electrical issue when you brake the dash lights come on and when you have the lights on the brake lights stay on. if any one would have a clue would be great as i plan on sussing it out tomorrow. also the dash lights don't work but light up when you first turn the lights on. will also get some pics and do a ride thread up :) .

Sounds to me like a relay has been hooked up wrong. When you brake the brake lights come on too or just the dash lights?

180s electrics are a pita, my mates 180's wiper starts wiping when he hits boost, he eventually fixed the problem... he removed the wipers
That's probably not very helpful to you, so try unhooking the stereo to see if that has been hooked up wrong.
I had similar problems when earthing to the wrong wire when I installed my stereo

Sounds to me like a grounding issue, could even be as simple as a dud globe in the rear that's arcing the tail-light circuit from the brake-light circuit.
Take all the tail/brake-light globes out (inc the high mount) and see if it still does it.

Thanks andy that was the problem with the brake lights.
But the dash lights still cut out they come on when you first turn the lights on for a second then shut off but will source this later

May find that the auto-dimmer switch is dead. Have you tried turning it all the way to max?
Might also find that the illumination feed for the stereo is interfering with something else too, so work out which wire is for illumination and make sure that it's not mixed up with another circuit.
