It strikes me as possibly unsafe and slightly dodgy to have spliced wires in a crush connector inside the fuel tank...
I've got an in tank Walbro to install in the VN and there appear to be a couple of wires that need attached within the tank space. What's the best way to go about this??
Solder them up? (got no heat shrink, can't imagnine heat shrink lasting in fuel anyway..?)
Solder at different distances along the wires so they cannot come in contact (knowing nothing about electrical properties of fuel ... I'm assuming it's an insulator)
fuck what a struggle thread, I must be tired :(
Anyway info or input appreciated, want to try to knock this job over in the morning with whatever I can find here.

i'm just doing this tomorrow for my supra. i'm going to solder them together. i also dont trust heatshrink in there so i'll use a bit of submersible fuel hose as insulation on the solder joint and hold it on there with a hose clamp

^clever idea but I have no submersible fuel hose... hmm.
Weld it with oxy while in the tank.

^this was DEFINITELY my backup plan.

how much loose metal parts do you plan to have floating around in your tank?? as long as they are securely connected, and cannot contact each other or the mounting brackets, and the pump is held securely in place, theres no real need for insulation in-tank is there?
I think you will find that crimp connectors are used because they can be submersed when most forms of insulation like tape and heat shrink cant.

Peice of mind.

:)
And yeah if I can wire them up sensibly so I'm satisfied they won't touch, I'll do it that way. Otherwise I will test out the crimp connectors.

Yup, I used bullet connectors/joiners when I put my Walbro in, heat-shrinked the ends for extra security but it's not necessary. So long as you've got a good earth the only thing you really need to do is make sure the wires don't touch.

Ended up twisting the wires together and using a pair of those screw down plastic crush connector thingys. Should be fine, they were in the pump's previous owner's tank for 10,000km and haven't dissolved :D

The screw down connectors will eventually loosen as the copper under the screw displaces over time. A 'good' crimp is about the best you can get, with decent tooling and the right connectors you will get a much more reliable connection than any screw terminal.

^ok I'll remember this for if it ever has to come out again :p
or I could just pull it now and re-do, the tank is sitting on the bench so it won't be that hard.
If I can find any bullet connectors... hmm
