Just wondering if any body here has studied a business course at tafe, Particularly Cert III in Business and what they thought of the course.

Basically I'v only got a high school education so im not qualified in anything so to speak and ever since school I have never really done anything besides being a degenerate waste of space. I'm 23 in a few months so play time is over and I think it's time pull my head out of my ass and actually do something in this world.

It has been on my mind for a while to do something like this and i did attempt a flexi-course a while ago but I didn't really have the motivation and commitment at the time. after some hard thinking and talking to a few people I'm thinking of enrolling for semester 2 this year and make a proper go of it this time.

I want to get into something to do with admin/ data entry and have been advised by the people at West Coast tafe that "Cert III in Business" is a good step in the right direction.

So basically any feed back from people who have done a business course at tafe would be swell. cheers

Did Cert IV in "Business in Marketing".. Felt like the lecturers didn't even know what they were talking about half the time - at Freo, around 7 years ago.

Yep did my Dip in Business at central in 04.

Passed all curriculum whilst being 100% high 100% of the time. It wasnt hard. Dip.Bus gets you into Commerce at Curtin still im pretty sure.

Do your Dip.Bus at TAFE, then go to Curtin and do your B.Comm.. best thing you'll ever do, its so applicable to a number of jobs, careers and industries.

I did a B.Comm Mgmt/Mktg and now a PostGradCert in Leadership and Management at Curtin... bloody fantastic.

Cheers for the info. The last couple of days I'v gone into tafe just to start getting information together to see what is what. The people down at West Coast tafe (nice and close to me) gave me a few pages of info and they have told me to get together my old school reports and come in and have a proper chat to a business lecturer and from there they will help me choose the appropriate course to apply for.

It's been a while since i sat down in a learning environment so for me this kind of thing is sort of a big step, i was never really one for study however at the time I was never really interested and never really thought about my future, Now that I'm a bit older I'm hoping i can make a change and learn from many of my mistakes.

From what your saying Jo is if i do get as far as getting my diploma in business at tafe its basically a step in the door to uni and onto basically so many other opportunities into expanding my learning in the area. its really good to know this!

i started business at tafe a few years back after hours at the tafe in northbridge (whichever on it is - central?) anyway found it crap. pulled out after a semester

this year i have started my bachelor of commerce at curtin as mature age external student (get to study by myself at home) and for me this is much better. as for getting into uni i just sat my STAT test - piece of cake and got in.

i am 26 with one daughter and another child on the way and for me studying after work hours in my own office was more practical then trying to get to classes like i was doing when i attempted tafe.

But everyone different and my preferred method may not suit you.

also - working for a company that will pay for your uni helps :D

Don't bother with a Cert III, go straight to Cert IV in Business, i'm currently doing Cert IV in marketing (first time back at TAFE) @ Central in NB) - Night Course
If you aren't retarded, go straight to Cert IV in business

TAFE is pretty good imo.

if its uni you want to get to just do the STAT test as with that you can get straight in.

i did mine a couple of years ago and finally made the decision last year at 24 to leave a warehouse management job move back home and go to uni and work in bars and bottleshops

best decision i made for my future.
short term it kinda sucks but im looking at the big picture

you can doooo it

See if you can the highest TAFE can offer for that course. Cert III < Cert IV < Dip < Adv. Dip

I thought Curtin only takes in Adv. Dip? Could be specific to the course though. Engineering wise it takes Adv. Dip. Business could be a Dip. if that is the highest TAFE offers. No point wasting time doing Cert III if you can do Cert IV. :)

Yep sounds like an engineering requirement. Saraceni is spot on re: business. Curtin substantiated that when i called in back in 08.

I've done Cert IV at the freo/beaconsfield tafe few years back. It is very introductory, if you don't intend on going to uni to study it further I wouldn't bother.

If you have the motivation and discipline, do it externally if the course allows for it. I never used to go to any of my classes and lectures and I turned out fine

My major concern with doing a flexi-course is my lack of self discipline and motivation after doing basically nothing for so long. I need to be in front of a lecturer to be motivated haha, I have a lady coming over from the West Coast education district and she is going to help me to enroll into the highest course i can for business management at tafe. Hoping for maybe cert IV.

I have been in contact with my old school to get reprints of my reports. Need reports for the last 2 years of schooling to hand in and they charged me $50 per semester for the reprints lol but i guess $200 is a small price to pay considering where this could take me in the future.

I have the luxury of living at home for free so I will be alright in that department. I'v pretty much got my mind on making this work!

if you racka the disciprine then you're going to be in trouble. you will need to do additional work beyond your contact hours at tafe.

If you have enough motivation to go back to studies, you will be able to find the motivation to self study. I self studied all throughout uni because i swear i have ADD ...oh look, a butterfly!... and i turned out ok-ish

I think its more to do with the fact that i need someone there for at least some of the course where I can ask questions to steer me in the right direction. Without someone there to do that I often feel lost and thats when things go wrong lol.

I'm hoping if I can get through "cert IV" (pending that I get accepted) in class then I can then continue further (i.e. diploma) by doing a flexi. If that makes sense haha

Do a mix of compulsory and flexi, thats what im doing.

The flexi workload is a lot easier and less to complete, I guess it all depends on how many units you want to do and how quick you would like to finish it.

Just remember you are doing the same workload in half the amount of time if your studying part-time.

i'll come round and smack you around abit if you feel lazy if you want :p

i'm pretty sure the flexi thing you will still have access to lecturers to ask questions etc. i spend most times corresponding with external and distance ed students

You guys should all study Finance at Curtin, so you can get lectured and tutored by R3N.
