Hey guys,
The coils (series 2 RB25 items) on my RB30DET are starting to break down under high boost. I need to upgrade to something that will last a little longer than a few months.
I will not waste my time/money with Splitfire coils. I used these in the past and they were utter shit.
Does anyone know of anything/recommend anything that would work with what I have? I know Mick at ovaboost runs Sonata coils on his 2JZ, just thought I would check to see if anyone else knows of anything that is pretty cost effective and works.
Cheers,
Matt.

not sure if this is what your looking for but , at auto x there was a red vl with plates SLOW6 that had an amazing coil set up on RB30 that had 6 individual coil packs , might be worth trying find out what set up that was, i think it was in with sanders racing, maybe give lee a call and see what he knows about it ?

how much boost matt?
the stock coils are pretty good, just ~15 years of abuse and heat takes its toll on them.
i've had 4 RB's, all running stock coils with no issues.
my current ones are fine with 407rwhp @ 18psi.

Highroller - Yeah, I might give him a call. I don't really know Lee too well (met him a few times at ovaboost) so unsure whether he would be willing to pass on too much information free...
Mitchy - Funny thing is, they only started playing up after the drags (which was about two weeks ago) running 16psi. When car is tuned again, it will be running between 18 - 20psi (depending what it makes).
I think I would rather try something else rather than the stock items - this is my third set, and they are still relatively expensive second hand.

unsure if you can retro-fit coilpacks from different motors, but the stock coilpacks (Visteon) for the 4L falcons outperform any of the aftermarket coilpacks for the motor.
if its possible to retrofit, maybe give them a try :)

usually they start to crack and thats when the problems come in.
you can try a non-conductive sealer on the bodies to cover any fine cracks in them.
personally i'd stick to a direct fit like new factory or splitfires, simply because its easy, and there are plenty of cars making decent power with them.
otherwise i've heard good things about mercury marine coils

Are you sure it's the coilpacks causing the issue?
Could be wiring, ignition amp, bad seals letting oil get into into coils.
If your determined to ditch it, your best option is an aftermarket CDI system like MSD

What ecu are you using.
Its got an EMS from memory. Need to see what dwell settings are in the ECU before ditching the coils. My own cars gets a misfire @ 1.9 bar on stock nissan coils.

Yeah pretty positive its the coils ... not having any issues with them on low boost (10psi), its only when you increase boost to 16psi.
Yes, its running an EMS Stinger. I will borrow a set of my mates coils tonight and throw them in, but I am fairly sure thats what the problem is. I wouldn't have a clue what the dwell settings are, I would have to ask tuner...

You are using resistor type plugs arent you?

If your using a stinger then you must only be waste sparking the coils which means only half the available coil recovery time as sequential fire.

My mate has a MSD setup he used on his 400 rwhp RB30ET setup. Worked really well, possibly for sale

Im just running splitfire coils and they have been fine at 475rwkw and 24psi

So In other words the limitations of your ECU are working your coils twice as hard than stock(Plus your asking even more of them with the mods and boost your runnning).

At the moment I am just using the standard coils... I am pretty sure the EMS runs two coils from one output on the computer (in what ever is the correct firing order).
What do you think I should do Rrob/Datsquik...?

I would make sure you have the correct plugs: resistor type is less likely to missfire than non resistor, heat range should be at least a 7 in ngk's, they should be the right length ( shorter plugs hardly engage with coil), you can gap them down to 20 thou if you have to but probably 24 thou should do.
You could swap coils with someone who is running without problems to see if the problem goes away. You need to check the coil charge time settings on the ecu and adjust them if needed. With the boost and hp your running you should be able to get away with waste sparking those coils but it would be getting close to the limits of the coils. The expensive fix would be to run some bosch coils with decent leads.
The tune can also have an effect on ignition breakdown, overly rich or lean wouldnt help, detonation can also lead to ignition breakdown.
