fwd 4age shit is more common than rwd

timing belt is easy
non interference motor so no damage is done if you fuck it up

I wouldn't worry about putting a gates racing belt on it... You will not notice a difference. Its only a bigport. I advise for you to replace the crank and cam seals and tensioner.

belt is easy to align, 12 o'clock on the keyway of the crank, align the notch in the gear with the dimple on the oilpump on the right of the keyway

there are also embossed notches on the backing plate that the cam cover bolts to. You align the dimples on the cam gears to this.

Call Just Toyota Wrecking or Japwreck and see if you can pickup some extractors for 20v 4age.. they were released on the 20v's from factory and will work on your 16V, they were a brilliant design. You just need to re-drill one of the holes on the flange that bolts to the head. Take your factory headers down and match the flanges up and you will see what I am talking about.

failing that call Mettams in midland and ask for some wildcat extractors, Mark should be able to get them in for you and he doesnt ask drug money.

this should help you

Tensioner from Veales/CBC Bearings will be fine. Genuine Seals are the way to go tho

The adjustment for the pump is on the back (towards the exhaust manifold) loosen the small 12mm bolt (i think its 12mm from memory) that bolts into the back of the pump which is on a sliding bracket, then unwind the Long bolt that you tension it with and it should loosen

i wouldnt stress too much, the old 4age's have pretty much the easiest timing belt to put on, ever.

All done, the tool that had the car before me put alot of iginition timing in and the cams were 3 teeth out on each side, so i re aligned it all and it was had no power and was back firing alot, so i retarded the iginition timing and its all running sweet, will have to take it to work on monday and put a timing light on it just to make sure its all good.

Thanks for the help guys

pretty sure you have to bridge T1? and E1? before you set the timing on 4age's?

WOW. And your supposed to be the subaru australia apprentice mechanic of the year. ....and you couldnt use logic and common sense with your indepth experience to work out how to do one of the most simplest timing belt remove/install's in existence. Good luck.

I would be pulling the dizzy out and re-aligning if it was out on teeth and required the ign timing to be up the shit to get it to run. Seeing it is backfiring it doesn't suprise me.

gav your an idiot, just got the owners manual for the 4age, going to re do the timing tonight when i get home, the timing was advanced all the way \, so i just backed it off a little to keep it safe.Timing belt was a sinch to do, lined up everything and ran fine, just felt really un responsive below 3000rpm, i have never worked on a toyota engine or done a timing belt apart from subaru so i didnt know what to line up and seeing as the harmonic balancer was pretty much butchered with its timing marks missing, it was a bit of a mission to find where to line it up.

But its all sorted now, runs fine and no un usual noises so im pretty happy with the way it went
