View Full Version : '02 VW Bora V6

Well, after the pulsar was written off, I came to a bit of a crossroads...
I wanted a later model dakdak STI, but didnt want to go so deep into debt.

After owning a line of shitters, I decided to go for something a little nicer to drive..

Bought this today.
2002 VW bora v6 4-motion
2.8L narrow angle V6 (147kw / 280nm)
6 speed manual
4motion AWD system
Leather, sunroof, electric everything

I drove this, and knew it was a step over other stuff in the price range for combination of looks, sound, performance and comfort.
Its super smooth, and the sound of the car is what sealed it for me (if you've ever heard an R32 golf with an exhaust, you'll know...).

Current mods:
KW Variant 1 coilovers (pretty slammed atm, haha)
Custom 2.5" cat back (replaces the HUGE rear muffler - pics to follow)
Audi A8 18x8" replica wheels
BMC Carbon air intake
Superchips Chip (apparently worth 15hp on a std car)
DVD/bluetooth 7" head unit

Some pics from the for sale ad:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/bora3.png

http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/bora4.png

Plans:
Wind up coilovers a bit
Haldex controller (more RWD bias)
brake upgrade (maybe)
change woodgrain interior parts to brushed aluminium
possibly a change of rims to OEM VW R32 18's to look like this (opinions welcome!):

http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/DSC02813-small.png

Thanks for reading :)

Very nice!

Rim change = brilliant idea. Not too sure on the A8's myself, but the R32 wheels look great on it.

Never would have picked this as your replacement :)

pretty keen on these.. what does the V6 go like?

Lonewolf
07-05-2010, 05:22 PM
not a light car (similar to a bugeye wrx), probably makes about 160-170kw at the fly, I only expect low 14's down the 1/4 as it is, nothing too quick, but very torquey.

brett: fuck you nigga, its already on its ring!

Lonewolf

yeah, will take it to a no limits night, see how the brakes hold up...
they're 312mm rotors, but heavy car so we'll see.

Not a fan of the current wheels...BBS LMs? :D

The sound will be beautiful.
R32 golfs on full song are aural sex.

My mkv gti has 312 rotors up front.. Not carrying a vr6, but they never struggle to slow it down. (I'm also on kw coils)

oh and I've got to agree on the r32 wheel switch. Those are a great looking oem choice...

Yeah, its about 150kg heavier than a mk5.
being the same chassis as the GTI means that theres a lot of brake options.
From boxster calipers on std rotors, up to cayenne turbo 6pots...
as for sound..

Any plans for the engine? Put the same amount of work into this as your last car and it would be very interesting to say the least!

Lonewolf
07-05-2010, 07:32 PM
not for the moment, its got all the basics already done.
Possibly a set of custom extractors and shrick cams, but need a tunable ECU for those.
Off the shelf supercharger kits are available, but not cheap!

Concentrating on braking/traction/handling for the moment.

Ecstuning.com have recently improved their shipping rates to Australia too, so no shortage of mk4 stuff from the USA.

Also check out tmtuning.com, oempl.us - lots of choices for where to source stuff.

This would be a bit different to drive compared to the Pulsar, Always showed a bit of interest in the Euro pigs, if I ever see it on a cruise I'm going to come say G'day and have a gander at it if you don't mind. What sort of engine enhancements can you get out onto them ? Well done on the purchase :)

No worries, do come and say hi!
Most people tend to go the forced induction route if you want more power.
Centrifugal supercharging is popular, for about 280hp at the fly (stock 204)
Best value around is this:
http://www.ctsturbo.com/products/C2_MKIV_24V_VR6_Stage_1_Turbo_Kit-267-87.html
Having 2.8L of displacement means you can run a decent sized turbo, combined with high compression and low boost = good allround motor.
Main concern for me is that i'd need to fork out for a full standalone ECU, since i dont know if anyone in WA that can tune the std ECU.

that sound fantastic! how did they do that!

Its a narrow angle (15degree) v6, so its almost a straight 6, hence the smoothness. They also come with pretty good cast headers.

FYI, this is what the stock exhaust/muffler looks like, just a tad of a restriction, lol.

They're pretty firm, but not too bad. Non adjustable except for height, so I may end up moving to a V3 myself one day if I get a bit more serious

please tell me you have ordered that turbo kit.

Ha, no not yet. Lots of other things to sort out before I go for more power.

R32 wheels have been ordered. Not sure if I want to spay them black before they go on...
Can anyone do a photoshop on the pic in the first post for me?

I LIKE.

I have a soft spot for VW's, and the Bora V6 is no exception.. nice rig!

My only criticism would have to be the seats.. get some really nice leather cleaner and treatment on them!! I recommend reading this for some good instruction (and use of particular products)..

do it - vwwatercooled.org.au

the guys on there are so friendly, helpfull and very cluey...being a MK4 there will be BULK threads on most aspects mentioned in your posts(http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f14/)

Quattro Motors is your best place to service or Golfwagon. Can't vouch for Golfwagon but the owner Brian @ Quattro is the man...even talked me out of doing a few things mod wise - his shop is always to the brim with VAG cars so he doesn't need to bullshit you

i found the hardest part is avoiding import tax's from UK/German suppliers for the plethora of options for em...not many shops in AU, the few local options charge out the wazoo just cos its 'Euro' i think

OP - check these guys out, have got a couple things through them

yeah im onto a couple of the US/UK suppliers for parts, and also joined up to vwwatercooled forums :)

possibly a change of rims to

inline for the Dotz Hanzo's for my Pogo...could be the biggest mistake ive made on the car but a local guy has em in the box and at 1/4 the cost so il give em a go

...sale of old rims are funding the newies anyhoo (when AL member replies to PM to collect  ...if your reading this you got about 48hrs to contact me or the next person waiting in line is taking em - sorry!)

Also picking up a haldex controller this week for more RWDness.

fuck nice buy dude, the poon will flow!

how far to the back can u put it?

Lonewolf
09-05-2010, 08:46 PM
driving normally, most of the power goes to the front wheels, and gets pushed to the rear wheels when traction is lost.
Haldex controller pushes the power to the rears more actively, prior to any wheelspin, by acting on throttle position too. = AWD more of the time

Congratulations Blake, nice car !
Euros are under-rated until you drive one.
Modifying one is expensive, but keep the AUDI wheels. I think they suit the car perfectly IMHO.

Watch out for electrical gremlins - which tend to plague these VWs.

Lonewolf
12-05-2010, 02:30 PM
owain: not questionable, i know exactly what they are ;)
Will have to have a cruise one night, dare say i'll get chopped even harder when/if you get traction.

Yeah, it already came with one electrical bug (electric side mirror), but nothing major. Its the price you pay for having electrical everything I guess.

Lonewolf

finally got around to getting the haldex controller and dieselgeek short shifter put in.

The short shifter is great, reduced throw as you'd expect but also taken out any slack from the whole mechanism. You can see that its now all bearings rather than rubbery bushes:
http://www.dieselgeek.com/catalog/S6.JPG

The haldex controller is also a good improvement its basically now constant AWD when you have your foot down, launches a bit harder now :)

Brakes are next on the list....

Joe
05-06-2010, 01:04 PM
That short shifter is bling!

Too bad you won't see any of it once its all back together :(

Lonewolf
13-06-2010, 05:44 PM
you actually can see it as it bolts to the top of the gearbox, and its an east-west layout :)

Ordered some stuff today to fix up interior parts
Arm rest delete kit - to get rid of the stupid arm rest as it just gets in the way
New glovebox lid as the current one doesnt close properly
new mirror switch

OEM mk4 R32 steering wheel (maintains factory airbag, better leather and proper fingerholds)
http://www.tmtuning.com/HOME/medienarchiv/bilder/4117_r32-104-110_1.jpg

also upgrading the brakes with an ECS tuning stage 2 kit:
http://c1552172.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/14455_x800.jpg

312mm slotted rotors
porsche monoblock 4 piston calipers
braided lines
pads + fluid

going for silver to match the std rear calipers, and wanting to keep the "OEM tuned" look.

HANS YOLO
13-06-2010, 07:04 PM
very nice additions...where are you bringing them in from?

me thinks i will have to take a trip to Golfwagon. Have you found their shop to be massively busy?

Lonewolf
13-06-2010, 07:26 PM
awesomegti in the UK and ECS tuning in the states
golfwagen is great, Joe is a legend and knows his stuff. Was about a weeks lead time to get my car in there.

HANS YOLO
13-06-2010, 07:59 PM
sourcing parts for the Polo stateside is proving a pain in the ass for me as the model wasn't released there.

plan to go talk to Golfwagon/Quattro about ordering in some stuff from here (http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Performance/Vehicle/Volkswagen_Polo_02-09_GTI_2008_1.8_Turbo_GTI/Brakes/614/45581) brakes and suspension...just a bit worried bout bringing stuff in that doesn't fit!

did Golfwagon advise you or have you just done your homework?

Lonewolf
13-06-2010, 08:28 PM
just order it yourself?

And nah, I do my own research, easier for me as my car was available in a number of markets and the Mk4 golf was very popular

HANS YOLO

very nice car mate!

Lonewolf
09-07-2010, 01:15 PM
I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that the factory cams are also that way..
Schricks cams are setup the same, so I can only presume its a good thing.

They have VVT on both cams so I guess there may be some reason they do it, be it torque, emissions, or idle quality etc

Very nice car Lonewolf! Im jealous as deep down Im a serious VW nut.

You're spending a small fortune modifying the Bora but I know what its like when the mod bug lives in your blood :) altho most parts for this would have to be new I assume.

If you ever want a bodykit from Europe for it - let me know - I may be able to get a good deal for you.

Lonewolf
09-07-2010, 02:24 PM
havent spent a lot on it really, they have a big support base in the UK and US (Jetta).
Only going to get expensive if I look for big power, as no-one has the ability to flash tune them here apart from Marks workshop (Quoted Circa $13k for a VF Supercharger kit...)

Wont be looking for a bodykit except maybe a better front bar for more FMIC clearance one day...

Took the car to the dyno today so I have a baseline to work with, and make sure everything was ok on the air/fuel side

First run in 4wd, you can see how jerky the curve is as the haldex kicks in and out
http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/dyno/IMG_0433.JPG

I then pulled the fuse so we could get more accurate figures in 2wd mode
Torque - You can see how early it makes peak torque, great for daily driving
http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/dyno/IMG_0434.JPG

Air/fuels - Nice and smooth, could run a little leaner for more power, but for a mostly factory tune its good. Gotta love wideband controlled ECU's
http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/dyno/IMG_0431.JPG

And a quick comparo to the old car (2L VVL SR20VE) - almost the same power but a lot more torque
http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/dyno/IMG_0436.JPG

Cams are going in next week and will have another run, should hopefully crack 200whp

Car is in getting cams now, and brand new R32 wheel which will be nice :)

Have also ordered a 2nd hand ECU with a C2 motorsports tune on it from the UK.
Main features are a 7200rpm rev limit, tweaked VVT tables, suits the cams im putting in, and allows me to fit headers/high flow cats without a check engine light from the rear pair of 02 Sensors.

If the ECU works ok, I will know that the software is suitable should I want to go turbo in the future.

Porsche gear out of stock indefinitely, so went another route and ordered these....

http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/brakes.jpg

Seat Leon Cupra-R brakes.
323x28mm rotors (std 312mmx25mm)
4 piston "lotus style" calipers
HEL teflon brake lines
Brembo pads
custom carriers

Will hopefully clear without the need for spacers, should be ok given i'm running 18x8's.

dyno after cams:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/dyno/dyno_cams.JPG

Would have made the expected 15-20hp gains if I had of had the 2nd ECU working with the increased rev limit.
Seeing what I can do to get it fixed (likely have to ship it back to the UK)

yeah, 24v version of the 2.8L the MKIII vr6's had.
and yeah, the sound is the best thing about it, yet to find someone who doesnt like it :)

Love your car mate. That is my old car that I sold to Luke bout 2 years ago.

I don't mind catching up with you & seeing it in flesh.

I had lots of plans for it and looks like you have completed most of em that were on my wish list.

Keep on the good work

Daniel I presume? If so I still have reciepts from some of the work you did!
1 question, was there any iffy wiring for the DVD head unit? My OBDII port apparently doesnt work....

The head unit was installed by a professional car audio shop in Balcatta but I wasn't very happy with the installation so I guess they stuffed up the wiring, had to go back few times.

Also few months ago I found the spare key so if you want it its all yours.

I'm in Marangaroo so let me know if you want to catch up.

Damn, I miss that car, especially the sound and handling. I got an XR6t with 435rwhp but the Bora was more fun to drive.

They come in a wagon?

At least you will be able to tell the difference between the front and rear.

Speaking of which - I only just learnt that there are a few older Passats about with a W8 engine.

few mm clearance on my wheels, so I might buy a 2nd set for motorsport dutes, either sprayed white or black, havent decided yet.

I also now have a Vchecker to see why the 2nd ECU I bought doesnt work properly, will hopefully test this weekend after Rob checks out the wiring of the DVD Player.

Vchecker/Vag Com = Same/Same?

Lonewolf
02-09-2010, 06:02 PM
vag-com does a few more things and a lot more expensive.
This is a small unit that allows you to check fault codes, reset them etc, as well as monitor some engine vitals.

Also just weighed the stock calipers, have saved myself 2kg of unsprung weight per corner too :)

I have a genuine vagcom/vcds cable(USB model) you're welcome to try, but I suspect it may only be for mk5 golf onward.

If it is compatible - (jump on the Ross tech site to find out) you are welcome to borrow it if you get no love from the vchecker.

Vchecker should suffice, just need to get the port working first...

With the help of Rob@Volatile Customs, Snipped the required wire in the head unit loom and I can now scan my ECU.
Plugged in the 2nd one I purchased from the UK (that previously threw a check engine light and died in the ass), and the thing works perfectly. No error codes at all!

Feels to be a fair bit quicker, but will see how it goes on the dyno this week sometime hopefully.
7200rpm rev limiter works nicely :D

Lonewolf

Dyno result:
Had the car on the dyno again today after swapping in the C2 (cams + high flow cat) tune.

Previously, the car had a flash from a company called Superchips, so this comparison is vs another tune, not the standard ECU.
Here are the results:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~lonewolf3/Bora/dyno/c2_afr.JPG

A quantifiable gain in low end torque, and smoothing of the mid range dip that I had previously, as well as the increased rev limit which will help on the track.
I also feel that the throttle response has been sharpened with the DBW too, but this may just be my mind.

I'm actually quite surprised at that, i've got a duratec HE focus (2.0L), and I can apparently get those same hp numbers with a set of cosworth stage 1 cams and a 60mm throt body... Obviously with less torque, but I would have thought you'd be getting higher numbers from a v6?

Lonewolf
14-09-2010, 09:34 AM
they're designed for torque rather than high RPM power (peak torque @3000rpm).

Be surprised if the focus motor did that, given my 2L sr20ve did similar power and i'd rate it higher than the duratec...

A lot of people are into modding them in pommyland, and are the first choice for people building caterhams and things like that, seems like ~200hp is what most people end up with after relatively light mods - TB, intake plenumn, cams, exhaust and a tune.

But I sit back and look at the cost of all those parts, and can't justify it as being better than a deposit for an XR5...

If thats true, a circa 100% power gain via n/a tuning is awesome give they're only 105kw at the fly stock?

I'd really like to turbocharge this motor, another 100hp would make it a bit quicker, and would likely develop circa 400nm of torque too. Maybe one day :)

Well the XR4 runs the same duratec HE and comes out of the factory with around 200hp, so I guess so. (edit: no they don't lol, but theres plenty of people with those numbers). Problem is the huge $$$ involved with modifying a duratec.

Can you get SE kits for those vw's?

Lonewolf
14-09-2010, 10:10 AM
oh, I was talking power at the wheels by the way, I know a lot of the UK guys deal with calculated flywheel power :)

SE kit?

SC I mean, supercharger. SE was just a product of my mind being put to sleep by my tragic workload here in front of me lol!

Lonewolf
14-09-2010, 10:26 AM
yeah, there is a Vortech supercharger kit available from VF Engineering, however the general consensus is that they fail a lot.
I'd like to go one, but the limitation is with the software (GIAC) being a backward step from the one I'm now running.

Turbo also gives room to wind up the boost should I decide to build the motor and shoo for 400-500hp too.
