Taken from the smoking tax thread as to not hijack

Why should we. Rudd wants 1/3 of our states GST takings in exchange for getting a fraction back in the way of the health reform, why should we have to put in so much to pay for the other states shortfalls. 10% of the oz population lives in WA so why should we contribute the most only to get so little in return.
It was a good decision imo. WA should become an independent state of the commonwealth.

Guess it's about that time just before election time when labor backers pockets need lining.

New release from the rudd camp,
Since WA wont hand over 1/3 of their gst takings to buy into the health reform the rudd government they have now decided to introduce a new tax to take 40% of the PROFITS after normal tax out of the pockets of mining company's. If it wasn't for the resource companys we have invested in this state Australia would of gone broke in the GFC.

"Kevin Rudd is looking for yet another source of funding," Mr Hockey said.

"He's spent all of the last surplus, he's spent all of the next surplus, he's now taking money off states, he's taking money off smokers, and he's about to take money off the golden goose that's delivering Australia an age of prosperity."

Double tax grab

Western Australia's peak business and mining organisations have condemned any move to introduce a new resource tax, saying it will drive investment overseas.

James Pearson from the WA Chamber of Commerce says a double tax grab would be a bitter blow.

"This is the industry that is not only lifting this state out of the downturn, it's also driving the rest of the nation's economy," he said.

WA Premier Colin Barnett has criticised mining companies for failing to prepare for more federal taxes.

But Reg Howard-Smith from the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy says miners have been preparing for the review for months.

He says the sector will oppose any additional taxes and continue to push for a royalties-only scheme.

"Clearly the major strategic issue of our focus now for over 12 months has been on opposition to a resource rent tax in Australia," he said.

"We will continue to advocate a very strong position ... we are obviously waiting to see what comes out of the release of the report on Sunday."

Blame Rudd all you want, hes doing what the current and next politician will do, finding ways to make more money.

The point is, WA during the GFC was contributing almost half of Australia's GDP. At normal levels we contribute over one third of Australia's total GDP

The reserve bank said that if they could give the states separate interest rates, NSW would be on 3% and WA would be on 12%.

Its time for WA to succeed.

well when things were good they kept cutting taxes (and services), now things are shit (and they are spending money on services) someone has to have their tax increased

either personal income tax
company tax
gst
or this rent resources tax have to go up

any of the first three go up and they'll lose votes country wide

labor won without WA in the last election, they will win without us again

Rudd should have not been in office.

As Howard said: "He has done nothing while in power."

He hasn't, he has cost more money, made more fuck-ups and seems like he doesn't know what the fuck he is doing.

The excuse of the "GFC" is bull...

Labor fucks up. Liberals fix the fuck ups. Labor fucks up again. Liberals fix it again. And history repeats itself over and over again...

Slightly off topic also, but don't you hate it when he constantly sucks up and talks about "working families"? What about working dinks (double income no kids)? And the rest of the population?

K. Fudd is just a pr monkey, not a politician. Rather than look at what he has and hasn't done it's probably better to look at what he has done that's fucked up. There's a fair few of them. Not too many political fuck up's end up killing people off. Almost everything they've done that they've made a song and dance about have been poorly thought out knee jerk reactions to something. it's not a good way to run a country in the long term

Pity the legislation doesn't allow W.A. to secede from the rest of Australia.
It has to go through a national referendum to succeed and I can't see the eastern states voting yes to losing lots of tax dollars.

WA was forced into the Commonwealth anyway from the start, don't see that changing at all.

Last few referendums on this didn't go well from memory?

Edit: Though wouldn't you be replacing one puppet, with another? I don't know how the Federal Reserve system works here, but if it is similar to the US system, it will achieve its own means anyway...?

people are so quick to forget...
You cant blame a poli for the problems of now, as they can only fix the issues made 3/5/10 years ago.
if it wasn't for rudd (and yes, a whole heap of other shit), we'd have been a lot worse off 6 months ago.

FTR, FMG believe the mines tax is a good idea and "very affordable"

Ahhh i think you'll find andrew forrest was on the radio yesterday saying quite the oposite...

no mining company in its right mind will happily support a cash grab of this size, as it will screw over plans for expansion, and whats the point of moving more dirt if your not going to make the money you planned on initially...

Egg-fuckin-zachery

Mining companies are now re-drilling in areas they wrote off before because the price for iron ore/gold/unobtanium is making it worthwhile to dig up and process now!

They must be retarded to think that. Would cause a decrease in jobs to cover costs, and we would be royally raped up the arse because of it. You would see movement overseas and off-shore instead, loss of jobs, affecting other industries too (hiring equipment, drafting services etc.) which is absolutely ridiculous to consider in the first place that such a grab would be possible.

Exactly. Look at Rio Tinto's expansion of Cape Lambert in the process of design and submission at the moment, it is a MASSIVE increase.

at least he said sorry to the abo's

Personally, I see it this way.

I wasn't here in the 1930's, 40's etc. Why do I have to say sorry, or have sorry said on part of, for something I did not do, or had no part in?

It should have been fixed then and there, fair enough it couldn't happen back then, and fair enough it was said now, but I don't see it as a bonus to his "profile" for doing this, as it has no effect on me or my way of life.

I am not saying it to be racist or any bullshit like that, but times change, people move on, get the fuck over it and get your own life on track, cos focusing on the past will get you nowhere. You can't change it. I don't sit there and wallow in self pity for what happened in World War II, and being Polish - there is family I would obviously have never met, and will never know exists because of all the misplacement that occured. Either way, shit happens, get the fuck on with life. :)
