Hi

Does anyone know if there is a way to transfer a vehicle between family members with out paying stamp duty and other fees?

Had a look through the DPI website but found nothing.

Cheers

I tried to do this a similar transfer but from Business to Personal and The Department of Treasury & Finance (http://www.dtf.wa.gov.au/cms/index.aspx) said only way I can do it is transfer in my name and pay the stamp duty again..

That said maybe if there was a deceased member of the family or some circumstances that can sway the department and just do a non monetary transfer.

depends what car it is too, you cant declare you sold a 20K car for 1K and put the market value as 1K, they will charge the stamp duty of the market value of the car if you are too unrealistic.

not so bad if you are only swapping over a cheap car tho.

dont even bother transferring it, your family members could probably work something out, i took control of my old mans car for about 7 months, just kept it in his name, i paid rego when it came roudn etc, when i sold it just got my dad to sign the transfer papers, saved me having to pay stamp duty when i bought it off him.

Yep thats the only way, as long as you can trust your family member!

Also make sure you are listed on the insurance policy if you do it this way, just in case.

well that sucks.

I think I will just keep it the way it is, cheaper that way :)

Put the car as average condition/etc on the transfer, and list it as $600 in each box. Take the form into DPI and if they question it, just say that the car was in a small prang and your family member sold it to you cheap 'cause they didn't want the hassle.

Did this with my sister, DPI didn't really care.
