Not cheap at all.

I pay $280 per month to park my car in City of Perth Parking in Northbridge.. and thats only 12 hour block per day, 5 days per week (lucky its all, *ahem*, tax deductible).

If you want 24/7 parking, its a lot more expensive.

Just buy a new shitter every time you come back.

Will probably be cheaper and your cars never last more than 3 weeks anyway.

I pay $180 a fortnight in West Perth - anything cheaper and you're winning! What about long term parking at the airport...? You will have to drive yourself there anyway. May be cheaper.

Hmmm. You're getting ripped off :) That's way more expensive on a daily rate than Wilsons and CPP parking in West Perth.

I found a bay for $300 a month. Still works out to be 15 bucks a day, which you have to commit to. I'd rather park in Wilsons/CPP parking which charge $13 to $13.50 a day, with no committment.

If I can find one that will work out to be under say, 9 bucks a day, so $180 a month, then I'd take it. Otherwise it ain't worth it. Probably won't find one at this price :(

Yeah but wilsons is 12 - 15 min walk to my work.

My car park is 20 second walk to my work.

$13.50 a day or $16 soemthing a day and save 25mins + can go to it if ever needed during day ect ect...

Fuck I would hate to work in the city, getting stung for parking. Sounds like the worst idea ever. Then again, it would pay off in the summer months with the copious amounts of glamour office flange crawling the streets.

$2.50-$3.00 a day is buying you laziness.. Find your 30 and take a short stroll. As mentioned there will be bulk hotties on the streets for your viewing pleasure. You may even get approached by one after you've done the walking for a bit ;) hahah

Can see hotties in the car!

The world will end in 2012 so i dont care about being fat!

Would rather sleep in 20mins! ( gotta drive to level 12 / 13 and park catch lift down then walk )

Walk to food court at lunch or into town see bulk baps during this time.

+ Summer coastal run on way home.

City is even more expensive than west perth.

Try paying 50-60 bucks per day. Did that a few time in the Wesfarmers building, when they ran out of parking elsewhere. Ouch!

Fuck I would hate to work in the city, getting stung for parking. Sounds like the worst idea ever.

Its tax deductible if you're in the right job!! I got all my parking money back and then some last year through my vehicle and parking deductions, so I'm happy with that.

It's bloody awesome driving into the city.. you get to listen to music on the way to and from work, drive your own clean car in rather than standing next to some smelly arm pit on the train or sitting next to a stinky cvnt on the bus every morning and night.

It all comes down to car park selection too. I have tried 3 different car parks before I found this one.

Instead of parking at Pier st or Roe St and having to tackle the ridiculous city traffic (Pier St was the worst, had to battle Wellington St traffic for 15-20 mins and then it was another 10 mins from Beaufort St to home, farkin stupid!), I now park in Northbridge. It takes me 5 mins to walk to the car from work, and a 12 minute drive home in traffic at the worst, and I avoid all the city sh*t because the car park spits me straight out onto Beaufort Street, then I cut through the southern part of Northbridge (no traffic) to get to Mt Lawley, and then the back streets home to Yokine.

It also means I can come and go when I please (and I have to for work too), which is very convenient.

On that note, there are sh*tloads of apartments in the city for $350 a week or less WITH bays included.

Heaps of people who don't have cars lease them and then sub-lease the bays to other people, which is actually illegal under many strata by-laws, but it doesn't stop anyone :D

Is that coz you're not gonna do enough kays, or is it because you simply won't do any business travel?

I got a novated lease and I do zero percent business travel. I just drive to work and back, which is undeductible (I don't have any clients to travel to or anything like that in my employment). Since it is a fringe benefit, my employer is supposed to pay FBT on the car (which I'd have to pay them back for), however all the cash I spend on running costs (fuel, rego, servicing etc.) with my own after tax cash (like I would if I didn't have a lease) reduces the taxable value to zero, which means employer doesn't pay FBT, and I get a 41.5% deduction on my lease payments, which are salary sacrificed. And at the end of the lease, when I sell the car, the difference between the price I sell it for and the lease payout figure almost equals my total net of tax lease payments throughout the term of the lease. Which basically means the $60K car I drive, only ends up costing me 2 or 3K after I sell it, so it's almost like a free car! Your tax savings completely offset the interest on the lease, and a great majority of depreciation!

Joe - All those working in city benefits sound delightful, but I found it hard enough working in Canning Vale with 7am starts and driving from Mandurah. Freeway users are drongos at the best of times.

For now I quite enjoy my 2-3 minute drive to work, I get to listen to 1 song on the radio, then just put on tunes when I get here. I work on the canals so the view from the top floor (read: 2nd storey) can't be that bad compared to the swan river and I don't have to deal with any parking costs, freeway muppets, etc. Of course the occasional right lane hogs blocking right turning lane at the set of lights as mentioned a month or two ago is annoying!

As for the sleep in - what time do you start dufus? Do you have to operate on mining time due to your clients?

/end geek modeIts a novated lease with pre tax deductions that pay the finance on the car that the lease company takes out

post tax deductions that go to a kitty where allocations are made for fuel, rego, ins, tyres, servicing, etc etc. had fuel cards with it for both BP and Caltex and could use 98Ron if i wanted.

bought that car at $12K cheaper than new due to fleet discount and not having to finance the GST on the car. had to do 25,001km a year to avoid FBT tax. since i was contributing towards the running costs of the car meant 0% FBT.

because i was driving from our work offices to onsite everyday i could claim rate per km and also parking. obviously only a percentage of the parking as you already said cant get 100% back on the parking only the rate at which your tax is at.

the car lease meant my taxable income was waaaaaay less and my hecs payments were fark all per pay, got a heap of tax back every year, child support, etc was low too. but paid the balloon payment on the car last week. now am out of my lease so this financial year will be my last with such great benifits.

although thinking of buying another new car (calaisV or SV6) on lease again and having that as my daily hack while EXCESSV gets a new heart and a whining hump where the manifold is :3some:

Yeah, sounds pretty much what I am doing. You'll probably find that if you sell the car now, and pay the lease out, you will have heaps of cash left over, that's if you were to sell it lol!

You realise you can renovate the car? Just refinance the payout figure, and keep doing it again (with obviously smaller repayments), unless you are doing significantly less kays because not driving to site anymore...

i increased my allowance hugely in the 3rd year as a use of forced savings for me. means now my already taxed post deductions come back to me as a lump sum tax free.

didnt want to renovate it as i have been at this company for over 4years and want to move on. i know other companies dont really find taking on leases as an issue but i wanted to be free of the strangle hold plus be back on full pay to pay some debts and do some mods.

once salary permits i will novated lease a AMG C63 :idb:

Im in Craigie and have to drive to City which can take 35 mins or over an hour all depends.

I get up 7:15 and get to work by 8:25ish... If I have to pay $3 less and go to wilson parking I have to get up around 6:45 as driving to the carpark is gay - 1 way street then drive up 12 levels park - go down the lift walk 12 - 15 mins to work. then obviously i dont get to use car during the day to go meet people for lunch or go to shop ect...

Ideally I am going to sell 1 of my 6 cars and buy a motorbike. Still get parking at my work, but it will be free. Just need to find out if driving out of class is just a fine or more... If anyone can help? So I can just by a Harley straight up instead of going 125 for a year ect...

Sleep in is only 20 mins. But that 20 mins becomes invaluable!

Mate, you should have claimed those mods as 'repairs' :) I'm getting new rims for my car, and claim that my stockies got cracked, so I had to replace them. Mods are not allowed as a recipient contribution, but if the item is replaced due to the original being broken, you're fine. I know a bloke with a WRX who is doing precisely that. Claimed his new FMIC, exhaust etc, with the shop's invoice mentioning it as a repair lol! Basically you end up with a higher recipeint contribution than needed. This excess you could have salary sacrificed, so you could have claimed it back on y9our tax. Ah well, no point crying over spilt milk.

And with the C63, unless you buy it cheap second hand, you will get raped with LCT threshold tax consequences... It will probably cost you more than if you bought it outright. Novated leases only work for cars up to a certain amount. :(

Haha nah, I work for an iron ore company, not for public. But can give out handy hints :)

Yeah, you cannot go overboard, 7K for brake repairs is ridiculous. But minor mods like exhaust, fmic and associated pipework, sometimes factory items are more expensive than aftermarket parts. Hell, grab a hammer and chuck a few dents in them, take a picture and you got proof :) You could probably even get a new ECU, just fry the stock one somehow, and Bob's your uncle :)

The above constitutes tax evasion. Use at your own risk

or just get multiple reciepts for consumable items(i.e.gearbox flush, wheel alignment and rotoration, diff oil change, remove coins from cd changer etc, its all small stuff but mounts up and there is nothing wrong with upgrading brakes if you have a towball) rather than one great whacking invoice for brake kit, obvisouly depend on how well you get on with the joint supplying/fitting.

Mentally dealing with d*ckhead drivers that can't drive. 12998439 sets of lights. Paying for parking. Not being able to have more than 2 beers after work. No thanks!

I catch bus to/from work for a measly $4/day. Stick the headphones in, sit down, relax, and listen to my tunes. Sometimes read a book. It's only a 10min trip.

Car is tucked away in the garage and barely moves. More cash to spend on hookers and crack/car mods/drinking.

I meant ridiculous in terms of abusing the tax claim thing, not price of the brakes itself :)

Yeah, be honest (to an extent), stretch the envelope a little bit, that's fine haha. Just don't arouse any suspicion with massive claims.

Good news is, ATO hasn't done random FBT audits for good 10 years if not more. I don't think that is even on their radar. To be honest, seeing how some of the leasing companys set up novated leases, some of them do not even comply with the tax legislation to make them an effective salary sacrifice arrangement. So if they ever get caught by ATO, you and your employer are screwed. I lost count how many times I have dealt with leasing company representatives, when getting a quote (for me or somebody else), and the clauses and terms of the lease they're coming up with breach the ATO guidelines. They're employng retards, but unfortunately a Joe Blow will not have the knowledge to realise that, and will happily sign on the dotted line.
