I went to Harvey Norman the other day and had a look at their cameras .
asked the guy there what the difference between an expensive point and shoot and a cheap SLR .He had no idea and said a camera is a camera . just depends how much u want to pay . So i am asking here what the difference is.
This will be my first cam in a while and looking at spending around a grand . don't want to go much more, so i am also wondering what people would recommend.
thanks

This all depends on your intentions.
If your just going to be snapping away, just get a Point and shoot. If you feel like your wanting to take this up as a hobbie. Do some research on brands, try some out at a CAMERA SHOP, not the like if HN of good guys.

most of them will come with a 'kit' lens.
then you can buy more depending on what you wanna do

For canon I wouldnt go the 1000d - spend a bit more and get the 500d so you have the HD video aswell, and a few more features for when your skills improve

a bit more? 500d is almost double a 1000d price.
nothing wrong with the 1000d, i only bought the 450d cause i managed to scam a good deal direct from canon.

For anyone recommending you a body/lens withour knowing first what your going to be shooting, don't listen to them! The different bodie's applie for different styles of photography.
What will you be shooting - Landscapes, sport, portraiture, Automotive
What sort of conditions will you be shooting in - Lowlight, Night, indoors, outdoors?
These two questions alone will gauge what you need to get you statred.

Bit of a general assumption there. Depends who you speak to at the shops.
But like he said above, it depends on if you plan on doing family stuff, sports, night time.
If you want a bit of everything I would recommend the 50D or D90. If you plan on doing video recording too, no point gettin something unless its HD so the 500D would be a good option for a starter.
Like everyone said but it depends on your budget and how often you plan on using it and how serious.
There are some great alternatives out there in the digital still market like the Canon S90. Fuji S200 EXR if you want zoom, Sony WX1.

My first camera was a Fujifilm S6500fd and it was a great starter camera. Not a true SLR, lens wasn't interchangeable, but had alot of features and settings similar to my 400D. Cheap way to get into it and start learning, then you can upgrade later on when you feel up to it.
My old for sale thread of my old camera, had some pics in there.

Look for a second hand 40D with a 17-85mm.
The 1000/450/500/550D are all plastic bodies, The 40D is a magnesium chassis.
The standard kit lenses are not much chop (18-55, 55-250 and 75-300), The 17-85 is a much nicer, sharper lens.
You should be able to pick up a 40D kit second hand for about the $650-700 mark..
