Theyrenot models dude, its a style of photography which make it look like model using a tilt lens.
I saw an formula 1 single shot image which looked like that.

Tilt-shift photography is fascinating.
It makes for some interesting shots.

wouldn't be doing the same thing though, it would just blur foreground and background out, with a tilt shift you are Tilting the Focal plane a certain way, so if done right you can shoot at say F/4 and get a really deep depth of field, which wouldn't be possible in photoshop, say if you wanted a faster shutterspeed but didn't wanna use a higher iso.
It's an amazing effect, But not many people can justify almost 3k for a TS lense.
I know I cant.

It looks neat, but I think tiltshift is a bit of a fad at the moment. I'm not sure in what situations it would be useful, other than "OMG it looks like a model!" as evidenced above.

Good for stitching perfect 2 shot wide angle pannos, Good for any shots where you want the perspective to be straight etc buildings, also good when you want to change the angle of focus so you can still have a narrow depth of field, and also shots where you want right from foreground to background in focus, the whole make things look miniture is a bit of a fad but I wouldn't say that tilt/shift photography is a fad not many people own one that I know of.

I love it :)
my interest in this led me to find a similar technique called smallgantics (used for motion-pictures)

looks the same as what Marc posted, is just a lens where you can tilt the focal plane...... Yes you can mimic those shots above in photoshop but there are still uses with this lens where you cant.

hrmmmm,
spotted a few tilt adapters on fleabay. i wonder if they would be worth trying for the small expenses they are.

I wouldn't expect anything that great but hey for 100 bucks cant really go wrong, will be manual focus though, even the TSE lenses are manual focus and it can mess with auto exposure modes too.

I really want to buy one but I know I won't use it too often for what I'd pay for it.

Yeah its a very specialised lens, barely any uses for it for the layman - you might be able to rent one out though?

I work at Harvey Norman, If I really want it I can just order one in and then sell it cheap as an ex-demo model. :) Which gives me an idea... :)

There's a picture in the back of today's West Australian of Casey Stoner, and I'm fairly certain it's a tilt-shift photo.....anyone else see it?

I so want a TS lens. The 24mm is so tempting but ARGH..got to justify it. Thinking of using it to do enviromental portraiture

Was shooting up at Karijini whole last week and in the gorges the 17mm tse was on my camera pretty much the whole time.

Sony don't make any of these lenses so I have to get on the piss all night, real hard for my images to look like they are 'tiltshiftesque' :)
I do like the effect but it is a bit like HDR, it can get played out...
DRKWRX
28-04-2010, 03:45 PM
yeah lol I used it as I was saying before with the shift feature you get perfect stitched 2 shot wide angle pannos! I cant just chuck the 16-35mm on and shoot two shots and get a perfect panno, and in these gorges it really helped show what you actually see with your own eyes :) Ive only taken one shot before to try out the tilt of the lens not really my thing and with the 17mm you dont really have DOF issues so using the tilt for that is pretty much not warranted unless you're shooting very close to the ground.

i bought the tilt shift plugin for Apple's Aperture 3.0 software.
works a treat. The focal plane adjustments are intense!
its taking me some time to get it happening right tho, im fairly new to DSLR photography.

and macs.
Interesting call Simon.
I use Adobe LightRoom - better than Apple's Aperture in some areas.
Will keep eye out for TS plugins :)

Stupid question, but does this lense just make everything look like toys, or are you guys taking pictures of toys?

Would get sick of it very quickly I think.

Brockas read my previous posts in this thread, that use of the lens is just a wanker feature mostly.
