View Full Version : Coilover problem
So today i did the s13 - coilover , hub , control arm conversion my R31. Anyway s13 struts/coilovers are slightly shorter then original r31 struts, so iv gone to wind the coil overs all the way up, which has compressed the spring alot but didnt really push the piston out to raise the overall length of the coilover? its almost wound all the way to the top and its still low its actually so low i took it for a drive and it ripped the top of my gaurd out and lipped it outwards. Does anyone know whats going on with this why it wont raise?
Any help would be appreciated.

what brand coilovers are you using? you shouldnt be compressing the spring anyway. You need to unwind the lower body of the coilover so the coil over assy becomes longer.
there tien super streets , do you mean wind the helper spring as in the smaller springs under the main one?, the spring is compressing instead of pulling the piston out

Contact the supplier and ask if they can provide a different / longer base.
My Ceffy coilovers were provided with a longer base to combat this problem (suspension is same, top and bottom to S13, but the length is different).
i used this guide to do it :
http://wiki.r31skylineclub.com/index.php?title=S13_Suspension_Conversion
it states that r31 struts are only slightly longer and this should be able adjusted on my coilovers by just winding them to desired hight.

are you able to unwind the base of the coilover from the body of the shock that bolts onto the hub/stub assy or is the base fixed??

bugger :(
if your winding the spring up to compress it, would you not just be shortening the struts overall length, as you are compressing the shock somewhat as well. I would be unwinding the spring until it is loose enough just so the spring can seat itself without being able to rock the spring around
that might be right aswell ill try that tommaro , yea it could be pushing the piston in instead.
get longer springs, or get tender springs to sit below/above the main coil.
That is, if the actual shock will let you go much further.

you need BASE adjustable coilovers when you put S13 gear in a 31.
like the ones shown in that guide, the base of the strut moves up/down independant of the spring, which gives you the required length to suit a 31.
thanks for that mitch , i got it about 10-15mm hire today and i hit in the inner lip of the gaurd so it doesnt catch and its good now only scrapes when backing out of my drive way because its pretty steep. The rears are stll about the same hight as my old king springs so im happy with that.
