View Full Version : 215i T56 HSV clutch issue

Mate's VR Senator 215i T56 has a lovely new clutch problem. The longer the car is left without the clutch being used, the further down the pedal the friction point goes. Left overnight, it will be off the bottom of the pedal (depressing pedal does NOTHING).. and it needs pumped about 50 times to come back up onto the pedal.
Once it's driving, everything works OK.
Any ideas?
These cars have a very non standard clutch setup, a hybrid cable/hydraulic setup which is apparently somehow self adapting/adjusting... I don't fully understand this. Please - if you know nothing about these particular clutches, don't pop up in here with stupid questions like everyone I ask seems to spit at me. For example: "hybrid? how does that work", "no, it just has a hydraulic clutch, all T56s do..", "nah VRs have cable clutches, you're wrong.." will NOT be appreciated.
Any helpful comments WILL however be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Sam

Check the master and slave clutch cylinders to ensure that they're sealing properly and not bypassing fluid. Given what you've told us, I'd expect it to be an issue with the hydraulic part of the system rather than the cable part if it is indeed a hybrid.

If fitted with a hydraulic master ittl be interesting to see if its been rebuilt and sleeved before :)

Yes they are hydro and cable
A wierd system on them I was glad to see gone
I would suspect hydraulic bypass and the master needs recon
However they are a German (FAG) designed cylinder and run a centre valve on the end of the piston which if swollen up from contaminated fluid isn't available
Unless its already had a replacement master on it at some stage

Master cyl is brand new genuine, about a month or two ago.
No contaminated fluid I would say, we flushed and bled the whole lot through very carefully and thoroughly.
Will try a re-bleed and hope that somehow fixes the problem. . the master cyl is a pingpingpingping to do on these cars.

Take it back to who ever fitted it and have them rectify it . Cylinders are easy to do

Nope, I fitted it. There was no problem with fitment.
Easy to do? ever done the master cyl on THIS particular arrangement? pingpingpingping of a job

Problem before was very different, oil was leaking back up past a seal in the master cyl causing the rate of clutch pedal depression to impact the effectiveness of release. (Fast depression = worked fine, slow depression = did nothing at all...or something like that, can't remember exactly)
Since new master cyl was fitted a couple months ago, it has been 100% fine and awesome.
This problem has just come up in the past couple of days.
