Trying to shine up the Prado's factory bull bar. Any advice on the best metal polish to use?

It hasn't been done since 2005 so it's looking rather dull.

Not sure if thats the right spelling, but its in a black and gold tube, not to be mistaken with the black and gold brand!

Machine buff is going to give the best finish too mate if you can get your hands on one

Trying Autosol. It's not doing the job and yes Gav, I'm using an air machine buff.

Is Meguiars going to bite a little more? Autosol just seems to skim over the top.

They still produce Gumption ? Shit is ace, used it all the time to polish parts on my old pushy.

Autosol is your next best bet, and alot of elbow grease.

can buy it at the supermarket and is about 8 bucks.. use it with steel wool and then finish the job with autosol with steel wool and then a rag with autosol.

No different product, it's just called "Purple", it's sold by private rep around WA, I can't for the life of me remember his business name, but it is awesome stuff. You're not meant to get it on your skin, it's that good.

I find using an liquid acid based metal polish first with a hard bristle brush then washing off. Dry and use metal polish like autosol or septone metal polish if you want something with alot of bite...
Is it just dull or is it badly scratched?

This stuff I think is the one you're referring to as the purple polish? California Customs is the brand. I've heard immensely good things but have been too slack in getting around to using it myself.

Costs around $30-40, from testimonials from customers it's worth it.

Most wheels with a polished lip will be clear-coated.. so any ordinary car polish or wax will be your best bet. Use a clay bar for the bore water stains.

If you use aluminium polish on clear coated polished rims, you may damage the clearcoat.

If your wheels have had the clear coat stripped off at some stage, or they came without a clear coat to start with, then by all means go for it and use Autosol or Purple, or whatever you prefer.. but best if you check first!

Cheers Joe,

Query - how do you check first if the Chrome Lip has been clear-coated?

Bare polished aluminium will go dull after a while, if you've never polished them.

If you clean your rims and they're still pretty shiney even after washing and wiping them dry, then they're clearcoated.

my rims are chrome lip and and i have used Meguairs NXT Gen metal polish and works a treat on them...apply some "spray magic" and enhances shine even more. although fuken hate chrome now as shit just etches in and is a pingpingpingping to get off :(

tried autosol, purple metal polish and meguars NXT Gen metal polish all on my strut brace to see which one was "better"....i couldnt tell. although i used them via hand polish with a cloth...so nothing too harsh.

I'm not sure if it's the same, fairy sure it comes packaged differently down this way. But the guy whom sells it, his business is called 'Auto Smart'. I used 'Purple' on my intercooler and SSR's amd they both came up amazingly.

Shit is worth is weight in gold! I used to work at a Mack dealership and we'd go through boxes of the shit.. Truckies and bikies love it!

The Alloy Deoxidizer they make is amazing too, It bought back a set of Alcoa's back to looking brand new after months of running on salt lakes.
