View Full Version : JZX90 MARK II
Thought i'd post a build up thread on my 1JZ Mark II since swapping the R32 out. (it's really my girlfriends but she lets me mod it haha)

Like the old skool days, only they did it the other way around. Big up fron and small in the back, with fats attached!
Why the different sized rims?

The only rims in my price range at JPC :)
The rear wheel arches are quite big too so it suits

nice!
Very nice, got a soft spot for dark green Mark II's :D. Shift kit, dumps, and boost and time for skids
Haven't updated this in a while but all this happened a couple of months back. . .
Got some JDM Concept resovoir sock's
http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/8549/photo465.jpg (http://img691.imageshack.us/i/photo465.jpg/)
JJR suede drift wheel

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/2716/p2210071m.jpg (http://img714.imageshack.us/i/p2210071m.jpg/)
Installed a very oldschool JDM BOV I had lying around. . . the first HKS SSQ and it doesn't leak
http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/9263/photo466.jpg (http://img143.imageshack.us/i/photo466.jpg/)
Finally got around to making my stainless lobster back intake. I only tacked it up and got Briffa Engineering to TIG it as i only have a MIG.
http://a.imageshack.us/img697/5019/p7200135.jpg (http://img697.imageshack.us/i/p7200135.jpg/)
And whats this . . . ?
http://a.imageshack.us/img838/8136/p7280139.jpg (http://img838.imageshack.us/i/p7280139.jpg/)
GT2 Super Intercooler kit!
http://a.imageshack.us/img375/367/p7280140.jpg (http://img375.imageshack.us/i/p7280140.jpg/)
http://a.imageshack.us/img829/2931/p7280141.jpg (http://img829.imageshack.us/i/p7280141.jpg/)
Front mount in but i'm not happy with the end result as you can tell by the pics.
Looks good here . . .
http://a.imageshack.us/img132/9312/p7310142.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/i/p7310142.jpg/)
As this kit was made for everything but a 90 i had to cut this pipe to extend further out to the bumper and then cut the end off and add a 45deg to get it just right. The pipe on the otherside was a perfect fit.
http://a.imageshack.us/img840/4847/p7310143.jpg (http://img840.imageshack.us/i/p7310143.jpg/)
You get this little authentication plate with the kit.
http://a.imageshack.us/img245/3721/p7310144.jpg (http://img245.imageshack.us/i/p7310144.jpg/)
Now you can see why it is not made to fit a 90 as it sits a good 50mm lower than the bumper, hence i'm chasing a front lip to cover it. Had to chop alot of the bumper out to get it back on but it fits nicely.
http://a.imageshack.us/img121/1019/p8010147.jpg (http://img121.imageshack.us/i/p8010147.jpg/)
http://a.imageshack.us/img412/5152/p8010145.jpg (http://img412.imageshack.us/i/p8010145.jpg/)
Lobsterback FTW (need a bigger pod)
http://a.imageshack.us/img196/5343/p8010146.jpg (http://img196.imageshack.us/i/p8010146.jpg/)
I had a bingle with a street sign on the way to work a couple of month's after this but it wasn't all that bad. Brought another cooler kit and put it on modifying the hot side pipe for a better fit. It also forced me to buy a new bonnet that wasn't dented and a newer front bar with lip so it hides the bottom of the cooler. The car looks more aggressive with it on but i have no pics atm as the stocko rims are back on it for the moment as i got a flat last week.
So i done a little bit on the car. Bought the clear URAS indicators off Skitzo and made up a gauge surround.
Take one piece of brushed aly and add some holes and 3M carbon fibre vinyl . . .
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/7013/p6040526.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/p6040526.jpg/)
Cut some bit's out of radio surround using a handy Dremel . . .
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/8504/p6040527r.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/713/p6040527r.jpg/)
Add a trio of Drift Saturn Series oil pressure, oil temp and water temp gauges . . .
http://img828.imageshack.us/img828/3995/p6040531.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/828/p6040531.jpg/)
Pop rivet them in place . . .
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/104/p6040535.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/35/p6040535.jpg/)
Wa laa. You have a nice set of gauges while still retaining your middle air con vents and inconspicuos to passers by and the popo!
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/505/p6040536.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/27/p6040536.jpg/)
Still need to find a Clarion faschia to finish it off

Next on the list to buy some 3" tube and make some blast pipes as the Blitz NUR's drone is killing my ears
I reckon I wouldnt be able to see those if I was sitting in a 90.
Short people friendly for sure
Don't need to be looking at them all the time though. Good for quick checks when at red lights, startup etc
Got started on making my blast pipes as the drone of the exhaust is really starting to shit me off. This should make it a bit more raspy and a bit lumpier on idle.

FFFFFUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!! 2 Dark green 90's with Blast pipes. Least mine is manual, and my pipes are bigger :P
Auto drone is killing my ears big time haha. Mine will be longer than that as that's just the length of the bend. Will be cutting those straights off and adding more length.
So i scraped the idea above as there were going to be too many welds, so i started again with some bends made to length. This is the result of what a mate calls "Mega Bombs" haha. They are no Chiba or Aspec quality blast pipes (whole lot was free) and its just 3" mild steel painted black to keep them looking somewhat stealth spec :D . The whole bend part is an exact copy of the Blitz Nur Spec i took off but less pretty haha.

Picked these up for a steal. Alloy crank, power steering and alternator pulleys. Gave them a good polish as they were a bit worse for wear. I'm probably not going to use crank pulley as i dont trust it as its not a dampner like factory one.

Finally get some independence back. Riding 32km to work everyday for 6 months killed me.
Bought this strut brace today and gave it a bit of TLC. Anyone recognise the brand as it's got no markings on it?
Bar is painted in crinkle coat but it's not fully cured yet. Trying to keep the stock theme happening for less hassles.
Dump pipes, cam gears and braided oil lines should rock up next week too so it's slowly coming together:eek:

Is that dump pipe definately off a jzx90?
It looks the same as the one I bought, it was off a supra.
I had to chop the shit out of it to make it fit, the bolt on the steering shaft still hits the heat wrap.
Just thought it would be a bitch, to get it coated, then discover it doesnt fit.
350 including shipping. Paid a bit too much but at least I know they fit. Would be easier to buy new ones and mod them. Copies would be like $50 for two 90 bends, about $50 for flange's, then labour for shaping pipe to suit flange's (heat pipe then massage) and welding. You'd be looking at 500 then wouldn't even have a front pipe.

Na It's off an old soarer. It has been "massaged" and by massaged I mean "hit with hammer" by previous owner. It is only a small dent near top of front flange where he straightened pipe up so flange would sit flat with exhaust housing. It should clear rack but if not a little "massaging" may be needed.
How much boost are you running through yours and what power?

a 1 off hand made dump pipe (even if your copying one) will usually cost more than a mass produced aftermarket one.
Mass produced ones are already developed and have jigs and all the right bits of pipe ready to go. Just need to be slapped together and welded.
To copy that one you would need to make a jig before you even started (make flanges to bolt to the ones on the dump, bolt them together, then weld the fabbed flanges in situ) then develop (make a cut pattern) each piece of pipe to perfectly fit together (of course you could just grind, check, grind check, still takes about as long as making a pattern though)
would be a lot simpler mind if it was just a simple single 3 inch or whatever :P
I'd love to make something like that though haha, get bored welding pipes all day!
edit: big straight pipes (250mm+)

Standard boost, no idea what KW as I have never had it on a dyno.
Turbos are shagged, I have just aquired all the bits to do a single conversion.
Bought a Mines ecu for it, then scored a Haltech interceptor for a good price.
Turbo installation was going to happen this weekend but I have picked up the flue.
It can wait another week.

Totally agree there but if you had a nice mate who could fab you one for cheap it could be possible haha. A mate has a spare 1jz sitting in his shed so that could be used as the jig and you could bolt the flanges up and go from there.

Engine would need turbos on it obviously. And you would need to know where the front pipe hangs, otherwise where do you end the dump pipe :P
Also due to the nature of the shape of the top turbo flange, and the angle the pipe enters it at, there would be a lot of back and forth while shaping it.
In this particular case, just because of the complexity, it would probably be easier to just borrow AE86s and copy it directly.
If that was possible would you want it in mild or stainless? I can get some material quotes for you if you want.
Pm me so were not hiijacking the thread :P

YUP. http://www.customautotrim.com/vinyl/wood_grain_vinyl.htm
But I'd be inclined to wrap the rest of the interior in CF Wrap, although some say its tacky it does give the interior a little bit of a faux modern feel :)
If someone made some real carbon pieces I'd buy them but if done right you can't really tell. At least its not supercheap special wrap.

wow, good service, where'd you order from?
EBay haha. Waited two weeks before he told me he didn't have them even though a tracking number was created. Was another three weeks until they arrived.
Picked up another package today. Stainless braided lines for oil feed and return. JIC fittings are crimped on so they wont come off, the flanges are zinc plated but i'm pretty sure so we'll see how they go. Everything is supplied and the gaskets are a perfect match too. Only cost $79 for the lot. You could only buy two Speedflow fittings for that much haha

having a tracking number created just means they've advised the freight company of a package. wont mean shit till you see something has been scanned in.
Yeah i know that bit, i kept checking the tracking number and nothing changed for two weeks so that's when i asked him where my item was. He said they didn't come in on his shipment, so he never even had them before i bought them. Bad ebay seller haha
Had a look under car the other day noticed some puny factory under braces that go from main chassis rail to outside of chassis just before the diff. Thought to myself "I can make some bigger ones of those", so i did! It's 25mm O.D. tube with 3mm wall thickness and the ends have been pressed using a special jig, not a vice and hammer. Took 3000PSI (30 tonne) to squash the ends down then there was a bit of shaping and drilling and they were done. Bolted straight into the car no worries. The factory ones are likened to some alfoil rolled up and you could flex it with your hands, so they wouldn't be doing much.

depends on what force the car is putting the brace under.
IE; if the car is causing the brace to bend then yes you are right
if the car is putting the brace into compressing then less so
if the car is putting the brace into tension then unfortunatly you are wrong.

Aristos are the same puny rubbish lightweight rubbish, bought some ex japan 2nd for $20 and acts like a tailshaft loop :)
Good fabbing there !
I'm guessing they would be trying to limit the amount of twisting force on the chassis when cornering. The position of where it is bolted to would indicate that they are intended to stop the the back corners of the chassis twisting up when cornering. The chassis cannot physically get wider or skinnier, only twist yeah, so therefore they would not be under compression or tension/extension. I may be completely wrong though as i'm no guru haha.
Would be keen if they are the same as what's on the 100.

I've not seen the 100 ones so i'm not entirely sure. If you could pull one off or just measure the length i could compare them for you.

The engineer was commenting on structural integrity on compression and tension, rather than torsion. In reference, they could be doing a lot of work if they were not under torsional load.
S133LTR
21-08-2011, 09:02 PM
um what?
Triston was commenting that the larger diameter pipe may help it not to bend, but that if its being stretched or compressed that it may not provide any more stength.. what does torsional load (twisting) have to do with it? My point was from spoontahs description of the force required to make the braces the material sounds thicker/better grade than the stock which IMO would increase resistance to stretch and compression.
Good work spoontah.. mods like this are always worth a shot imo, especially when you do them yourself and they cost you farkall.
Got my dumps back from CIC today. Hope they fit so I don't have to massacre their good work!

May have headlights for you after the weekend.
Still interested in coming round for a gander. Thinking i will pull both turbo's out just so i can check them and change studs and gaskets.
Dumps all done after working on it all weekend. Had to mod it a bit as they fouled on steering rack as I expected. Braided lines and fittings that I bought new off eBay don't even come close to fitting, unless you don't need a water pump. Sounds a lot grumpier than before and turbo spool is significantly louder.
After all this, I'm definitely going single as it was just too much of a pain in the ass and you couldn't pay me to do it again.
Will hopefully book it in on Wednesday at Ovaboost and get re-tuned for 16psi.

Looks nothing like that now, stupid trees and their fucking pollens making car look shit in 2 days.
Yours are way different to mine so they may be worse. Had to bolt dumps to rear turbo and semi install it, then slide on front one and bolt them up. Leaves almost no room to do up bolts.

Looked ace!
After fitting dumps I never ever want to fiddle around with a twin setup again so I set out to find a decent single for a cheap price. Considered buying a Kinugawa turbo after seeing the power that it made on Simon's R32 but had also heard some bad reports. I then almost bought a new T67 Masterpower turbo, seeing as though i had no problems with it on the old R32 and it's still pushing 472rwhp doing track days 7 years later. Then a TD07s- 25g popped up for sale on here this week cheap as chips and I decided to buy it considering it apparantly made 403rwhp on a stock 1JZ, so would be perfect for what i wanted . . . 400rwhp
So the new combo will go something like this:
Port matched head with mild port job
Performance Valvesprings valve springs
Works Engineering cam gears
BC 264deg cams
TD07s-25g turbo
Ebay SUS321 manifold with strengthening (will be copying my mates Trust SS manifold)
Turbosmart 45mm Hyper-Gate
Turbosmart Race Port BOV
650cc injectors (Siemens or SARD, don't know yet)
It's gonna take some time collecting parts so i will change my mind on some things no doubt.
Should be good for 400+rwhp on 22PSI and I dont mind the lag.

Haha yeah i know, that's three single 1J's in the space of a week. Gotta stick it to the 26's
I found a very good one on eBay after lots of searching and comparing and it's $152 AU not including shipping. Made from SUS321 stainless, spilt pulse T4 flange and it also has bracing on the top of the runners the same as the Trust item.

So got it dyno tuned at Ovaboost today and was pretty happy with the results although . . . Had a bit of a head fuck with the boost controller though as the filter had split and it would only read .2bar when trying to set initial pressures. So when boost was set at .4 bar, it would smash about 30psi of boost in. Got rid of filters and smashed along Gnangara Road unitl it was right and went back to Mick to tune it again. It made 282rwhp at 14psi. Couldn't go anymore as it was hitting boost cut in the lower rpms but was still rich up top. Mick was pretty impressed considering it's still the stock fuel system.

Figured i'd taken one step back with my pod and enclosure as it wasn't 100% sealed and had no CAI so it would just be sucking hot air in. Other reasons being:
1. I don't like how it turned out
2. Kept blowing IC pipe as I couldn't tighten clamp enough
3. Hyd fan hose ran through enclosure so leaks oil everywhere when you need to take out enclosure
4. Lid is very hard to get on as IC pipe needs to go on first but . . . (see #2)
5. Hot air made it ping on dyno
So I hacked out the factory airbox and made the airflow path as big as it would let me. I will be cutting out the front of the box and turning it into a BFI.

Also picked this up yesterday about 500m from the safety of work. Only got done for no reo bar or mesh and no muffler (WTF, think the cop was retarded). Pretty sure you don't legally need mufflers as long as it's below the decibel limit. Anyone care to shed some light.

Take that yellow off, your windscreen looks like it had a crack in it. Then go over. Fuck you're reo-bar.
Got a reo bar that I might mod. Although Marty had the idea if removing FMIC and putting a straight pipe across to join ends of piping.

So, sticker free?
So, sticker free?
Nope. Got everything I was originally done for off the list but then got these added:
-Exhaust doesn't exit the rear of the car properly (Take kit off and it will)
-Exhaust leak and coolant leak (tighten clamp and replace hose)
-Torn RCA bush (didn't see this until he pointed it out which is a good thing and I have the part here.
Back over next Friday, so should be all good.
In the meantime i got my mad fab skillz out and made some shit.
Made up a seat rail adapter for my Bride one so I can run an ADR approved Drift reclinable. Just used some 6mm flat bar and counter sunk all the holes so I can get it engineers approved.
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/9647/imag0204e.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/imag0204e.jpg/)
Made an external gate adapter flange that still needs v-band welded to it. It's gonna make it easier when the time comes to go single as i can have 360deg range of position.
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4795/imag0205h.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/84/imag0205h.jpg/)
And lastly, made up a new FMIC bracket today so I can keep my reo-bar in place and plan to get it permitted once my sticker is off. Made out of 3mm flatbar as the engineer that is going to look over it said that would easily suffice. Still needs to be painted black though as it looks homo.

Arvo shift was last week and thought hmmm, what can i make this time? Made a new underbody tri-brace as the factory one was bent and looked all flimsy and shit. Cost me nothing unlike the two on ebay for $180 and $270 each :p

alot of effort gone to this, nice
do you notice big difference with bigger triangle brace?
I did notice a little less body roll when watching the bonnet to see how high it moved with and without the brace going round corners. Having tall stock rims and tyres on it at the moment would probably make it less noticeable. But hey, any chassis strengthening is gonna be be better than leaving it stock.

tri-brace looks great. The factory one doesn't fit back on with my 1uz fitted. Might be worth making one to suit like yours.
It's just 6mm plate and 25x25mm tube MIG'd up so is pretty easy.
On a side note, I'm yellow sticker free and all the good bits are back on.

its not a huge engineering skill to make yet TRD and other brand charge heaps for something u prob fab'd up in less than 1hr
Took a little bit longer as I wanted to make the end plates the same shape as the factory ones. I got paid to make it as well... again!
Bought some more parts last week but next on the cards is an 044 fuel pump and SARD FPR to bump the factory injectors up a bit until i can afford some 650cc SARD's.

EDIT: I'd be careful the wastegate isnt a fake. A mate of mine just bout a 'genuine turbosmart' 38mm job from oversea's as well for around 250 delivered. I went to his house and was looking at it and couldnt fault it until i said to him.."where is the little cd" you get with all turbo smart gear and also under the box lid should be a QA stamp which his didnt have. After some reasearch on google turns out his genuine was a fake, but a bloody good copy there is no way you could tell..I have some pics of it on my phone here ill upload and post...

Should be able to run 13psi happily wiht the stock injectors and pump.
You just going SAFC?
I should but it's already lean in the low RPM with SAFC and it did ping until I put SARD FPR on it. Might be a different story if i get it tuned at Allstar this time.
It's a fake FML. After a better look and not a glance i found two immediate things wrong with it.
1: There is supposed to be the Turbosmart "T" on this face You can just make out a little square where it should be.
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/2143/p32903072.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/p32903072.jpg/)
2: The valve is bent so the seat wont go in properly and opens the gate a bit so it is just going to let the gases bypass it making it useless.

They look 100 percent real, we had a genuine one and the fake one side by side, the box on the outside is identical, the foam inside, how all the parts are laid out, the look of the part etc all the same..really hard to tell.

EDIT: Scratch that, missed your line about the valve being bent and the seat pushing it open :o
Can you see how the valve is closer to the left than the right? (it's bent to the left) When i go to put the seat in, it doesn't fit properly and opens the gate up so it ain't gonna do shit.
-Luke-

I saw online somewhere a bunch of china gates had the stem threaded into the valve seat and they where all on the piss. I wouldn't be surprised if that's that case with yours

No doubt a 44mm
Dash cracked yesterday due to excess vibration, most probably from Guildford train tracks twice a day, so I glued and liquid nails it back together and thought i should bring the interior out of the 90's. Cue 3M carbon vinyl wrap.
Came up pretty good but some spots i'm not happy with as it wouldn't stretch enough coz of some of the tight radius'.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3604/p4020311.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/19/p4020311.jpg/)
Looks right at home. Had to rotate comp housing a fair bit and cut 50mm off a 90 silicone bend to just get it to clear strut tower. This also mean's i have to make a S bend drain fitting up as the hose doesn't have enough clearance anymore.
http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/3731/p4020312.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/845/p4020312.jpg/)
So at the end of day one i have finished fabbing up dump pipe which was quite possibly the easiest part ever. So much room for it to fit with ample clearance.
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5769/p4020314.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/38/p4020314.jpg/)
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/1639/p4020315.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/716/p4020315.jpg/)
Half of the front pipe is also done. Just need two small bends and a straight to finish off.
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2259/p4020316.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/39/p4020316.jpg/)
And tomorrow i have to contend with this problem. Since the manifold is based on a US Supra, the gate flange sits right infront of the steering rack. I'm going to have to cut it off and lobster weld a tight 90deg so i can just clear it.

This was a headache to make as i couldn't get two hands in there to mark and measure. Guestimates worked out pretty well in the end. Mick shortened the flange up on the manifold and welded it at more of an angle. Used steam pipe instead of stainless as it won't crack with the amount of heat that it will be under.

Where are the piks got to see this yesterday looks good
Need to finish my airbox off first
Not everything went to plan last week but the single is on and driveable. I have a couple of issue's i'm not happy with atm
1. Decided I want a plumb back option so i currently have no BOV attached at the moment hence no gate or skid pics as it blows the IC piping off
2. Manifold fucked me over a little. Exhaust studs were too long so had to cut the end of them off which then messed up my whole exhaust system. Since the manifold wasn't stting flush when i mocked up the dump originally, everything has moved in about 10mm and now the exhaust touches trans lines in some spots. I have to cut dump and twist it 10mm to get the clearance back.
3. I'm not happy with how the intake pipe turned out and have modded the air box more to make the pipe more flowing and neater
I'll fix the exhaust in the following week as it's not that big an issue but i know it's there and i don't like it haha. I'll also be grabbing a Tial QR bov (http://www.tialsport.com/prod_bv_qr.htm) next week. Can be changed from plumback to atmospheric by changing the base which is handy.
All TIG'd up and painted. Wrapped the gate pipe and dump up to keep temps down a little.

Onto the bad/good news.
BAD NEWS (through my own stupidity): Though I could wing it with a double stocking air filter while I finish my air box off but sucked up something tasty and lost the corners off a couple of fins on the comp wheel. Still makes boost but have stopped driving it in a manner that any boost comes on until i get a daily in two weeks.
GOOD NEWS: I get good trade price at MTQ so can get if fixed on the cheap and will replace comp wheel with new billet one as Mitsu don't make relacement comp wheels for TD07's. Should spool up a couple of hundred RPM's sooner. It also had a killer whine likened to an 8/71 blower when it goes over 15psi so it was in need of a rebuild anyway.
Since it's pretty logical that metal has entered the engine I have a 1JZ short motor lined up that I will do a mild build on so it can handle the 24psi i want to eventually throw at it. This has happened sooner than expected but it means I can bolt my ported head on so should see better results. SPEC's will be:
- Block decked
- Block deburred
- Slight hone to keep standard sizing
- New rings
- Standard piston's cleaned up
- ACL Race Series Bearings
- ARP head studs
- ARP2000 Rod bolts
- Cometic head gasket
- Toyota genuine front and rear main seals
- Deburred oil pump
- Standard rods resized
- Crank knife edged
Chihan from eTuner over in Eastern States has just recently made 404rwkw on an unopened 1J running a T04z and flex E85 so i would hope for around 350rwkw on pump fuel with supporting mods.

Unlucky about the turbo. Funny how we both have issues with ours now hah.
I couldn't help notice that you said you get good trade price at MTQ. Possibilities of hooking me up with a 3076 cartridge at a naice price?
Haha yeah I was thinking the same thing too. Still only rims and manual separating us.
PM sent

If you get sick of the sh*tty cloudy head lights, Coventrys sells a head light polish that will get them looking new again. Only down side Is that you will spend a good couple of hours polishing them

PM mxracer has some US based headlight cleaner that brings cloudy h/lights back to almost new.
Only prob is it'll show all imperfections if your h/lights have hazing and spidercracks.
I just use Meguirs Plastic X polish. You can see the yellow on the rag once you've polished them but it also shows up cracks when the headlights are on.

That polish is good but the stuff he's got is a formulated process and makes cloudy lights look new out of the factory, just need good lights to begin with :p
It's not that three stage resto stuff is it?
