An internet sex predator who used chat rooms to lure young girls and pay them for sex was sentenced to more than 12 years jail today.

Ross Hine, 23, was sentenced in the District Court to 27 charges including 13 counts of sexually penetrating a child over 13 but under 16, two counts of indecently recording a child, 7 counts of using the internet to procure children to engage in sexual acts and four counts of possessing child pornography.

The court was told there were 11 victims aged from 13 to 15, and some of the offences related to Hine paying teenage girls $200 to have sex with him and convincing them to send him naked photographs of themselves.

Judge Patrick O'Neal said in one case Hine threatened to publish a naked photograph of a 13-year-old girl unless she had sex with him.

He said in another matter Hine plied a 14-year-old girl with alcohol and took pictures of him indecently dealing with her when she was passed out.

Judge O'Neal said Hine had also boasted about having sex with under age girls.

The offences occurred over a two and a half year period starting when Hine was 20.
