Hey All,

Looking at getting a GPS, just wondering what people out there would recommend?

also where is the best place to go looking for one? JB HiFi?

Thanks :)

Easy choice - TomTom. The people at JB HiFi will tell you they sell more of them as well and dont get as many returned for warranty.

Absolute worst is NavMan, it was prone to crashing and losing maps which is terrible if you are out somewhere and relying on the damn thing to find your way home. It is now a paperwight. The basic TomTom One that i got for $200ish is worlds better.

The Garmin Nuvi that's for sale at JB Hi Fi is about $195, this is the one I bought when it was on special. Its a 4.3" touchscreen and personally I find it easy to understand. The 3d view isn't that bad once you get used to it. I don't think the maps are as detailed as other gps's but you get the idea of where you are. Spoken street names are a plus too :)

TomTom > Everything

Use mine on a daily basis for work and does me well, although use a bit of caution when typing in numbers on highways. Occasionally it might want to send you 80km in the wrong direction...

Had (still have) a Garmin Nuvi for years cost me $800 new both text to speech and bluetooth but heaps cheaper now. Maps upgradable (at a cost). Always been very reliable unit definately recommend.

Cant go past Garmin for anything GPS. Mapping is second to none. I've only known of one brand to beat garmin and that needs yearly licencing fees.

Don't overlook the Mio's, I've had one for a couple of years and its the bomb.

Garmin for the win though.

tomtom live 900 series is fantastic, sometimes takes a while to gps sync but rocks stable. Lost 3 in the last year. an expensive exercise...

connects to most phone but not most windows mobile phones so you cant get the weather traffic etc if you have a WM

first garmin just got is a nuvi 5000, 5 inch widescreen with video input and its proven to be fantastic, takes forever to start up, its using a linux kernal. Both tomtom and garmin can be hacked to get the latest maps and speed cameras but its not a simple process and takes a bit of messing around

www.gpsunderground.com is by far the best site for maps speed cams and hacks.

I would recommend the garmin units as for us, they have been the most reliable and easy to use product.

If you are interested in pricing, pm me and I'll see if I can do any better than JB HiFi...

if you have an iphone you can buy the tomtom car docking station & sat nav app for $250. (150 for the dock and 100 for the app) good for people that dont already have a satnav but have an iphone.

I got it and couldnt be happier, the docking station has a good loud speaker so gives you good hands free, and also charges the phone and outputs audio and voice to your stereo...

highly recommended.
