Seeing as long winded Titles are the go...

Here's my 2002 VY SS UTE - I call her my Slut (as she's always up for a good time).

Anyway, some may know of my ute and it's many previous incarnations of engine combinations and I'm here to let you know I am back yet again with a new combo.

Seeing as i have spent more money on this car in the past 8 years than i owe on my mortgage, This IS the last engine combo the ute will ever see, besides a stock engine shall i ever sell, though it's very unlikely.

All though im not an emotional person i dont think i could ever sell it as i've had it through the good times & the bad. It's taken me to the other side of australia and back with out fault, I've also thrashed the absolute piss out of it and then spent money getting her tidy all again.

So to bring those of you who dont know the "history" on her upto speed i'll start with the combo's that have powered her over the past 8 years.

Engine 1: Stock with tune. 2002-2004 - traded in.
Engine 2: Built 5.7 with cam and Vortech V2-sq - Blower let go sending metal into sump. A few dead oil pumps.
Engine 2.1: Above engine with GT45. loose wastegate line gave it 20+psi on a cruise one night = cracked waterjacket down the side of block. Still drove it for 3K km's topping up coolant every now and then before i stripped it down thinking it was a head gasket. - nuh ahhh.
Engine 3: Was only in it for 30 minutes and on the 2nd start it snapped a conrod and smashed piston to bits. I Fucking kid you not. it did that on the 2nd start! (Baught it 2nd hand for 2500, seller baught me another engine)
Engine 4: lol this one actually lasted, but it was only in the car for about 3 months before i traded it with a mate on a 402 stroker.
Engine 5: LS2 based 402ci stroker, high comp 11:1 good for 450rwhp on a bad day.
Engine 5.1: Above engine with a Vortech V2 T-Trim running 7psi= 550~620 depending on dyno. I always went with 550 as conservative figure. :)
Engine 5.2: Same engine as above with T51r turbo. was installed for about a week. removed a day after dyno tuning, high comp + turbo back pressure = no timing.
Engine 5.3: Same engine as above, but back to the T-Trim. Changed to a set of ETP LS7 square port heads to drop compression and increase air flow. Going into my VZ Drag ute with a V7.
Engine 6: Stock L98- 6 litre with midsize street cam (224/228@112) + Harrop HH122 (2litre) positive displacement supercharger making 7psi = 490rwhp. ran a 11.6@123mph on MT Et Streets a couple of months ago. (I have the same basic engine in my DD VE and so far it's good for 12.03's N/A)

Just changed the rear pulleys on the blower to gilmer setup to stop slip and increase boost. Now pushing out 11~12psi and hoping to go 550+ rwhp again.

Apart from the engine changes, the ute has the following:
Coilover suspension in front
330mm rotors and 4 Piston AP's up front.
315mm rotors, single piston rears.
NPC Twin plate Clutch + Braided line
3.7 diff with Kaaz
Twin 3" exhaust with 1 7/8" primary's.
3 litre Surge tank with Twin 044's.
8 Rib Belt System
4 Point Roll cage
PWR Radiator to allow for track days or burnout pit madnesss
remote oil filter and cooler
Triple window dash cluster - Custom programmed by me
All the bushes and shit swapped out, Larger sway bar in front/rear etc.
Toyo Proxes 4's on Gmax Enigma's. Rear's are 9.5" wide with 275's.
All the mechanical work & tuning on the last engine has been done all by me, I've dabbled in the tuning side of things for a few years but never really took more than avid interest until my tuner left Perth (though he did tune my Daily Driven VE SSV when i had the blower on it on one of his many trips here).

To the average Joe the car looks almost stock standard as i keep the height in my cars near factory so as not to draw unwanted attention and it was good in the day to flog the absolute piss out of everyone thinking they were up against a stocky.

Anyway, i wont put pictures up of the old combo's as there would be far to many to show. if your interested at looking there are quite alot on my website @ www.vyssute.com

For now i will just post pics on the current combo.

I can happily say the dent was removed and the engine bay resprayed recently.

I have very good memories with this car from Many of the Great Cruises with alot of the long term Antilag members.

Yeah, as you can see from the pics when i had it up in tom price i lowered it with lovell super lows. since then i have sworn off low cars. Every fucking dip in the road on the way up i was hitting guards and wearing the plastic mudflaps onto the ground.

Now she just has the lovell low's and airbags in so i can lift her up another inch or so. Comes in handy when towing car trailers.

Also used to carry my old KLX 650 in the back. I remember on a trip to perth for holidays i got lost and some how ended up in the CBD. Got some looks as i had my "feral" exhaust on at the time and with a matching green bike, it looked tough.

Standard tailshaft, standard drive shafts from diff.

Car has done close to 130K km's with all the above.

I have only ever broken the centre uni-joint on the tailshaft and it was a stock engine when it let go. Go Figure!

As for clutches, i've only had 4 in it's entire life.

Put the Ute on the dyno again this morning making sure all the cruise & WOT AFR's etc were still all good after upping boost.

Power wise the best reading I got was 495rwhp on 12psi, but my rear tyres were slipping (they need to be replaced soon) as we gained over 40rwhp everywhere by having 2 x 100kg guys sitting on the tailgate.

i noticed we were getting about 1950ft lb for torque and we couldnt run the car unstrapped as it was trying to come off the front roller.

When i get some money im going to put a water/meth kit on it as it was getting into the mid 70 degrees intake temps by the end of the run.

AGIT8D
06-03-2010, 01:50 PM
Should you ever try to dyno a car unstrapped? That seems like a recipe for disaster. Or have I misunderstood? Great power and torque Dave, I bet it pulls like a train. I wouldn't think twice about saving for a blower for my combo if I didn't build it with such high comp haha.

Tre-Cool
06-03-2010, 05:45 PM
sorry, bit of misunderstanding in first post.

unstrapped in my case = not tight as all fuck.

However you can run cars unstrapped. it just depends on how much power they make and when. Have wheel blocks on the front & can also strap down front to the ramps.

Torque in this combo is killer, with the 3.7's im in 6th by 80kph and it was pulling up the Grt eastern highway & toodyay road uphill sections with ease.

VT SS
06-03-2010, 10:36 PM
yeah and if its looser its just going to pull up higher on the front roller and give a higher readout, but whats the point in doing that

tre-cool what was your favorite engine combo so far?

As much as i shouldnt do it, when my new car trailer is finished in a few weeks. I might change the brakes over again & take it down and give it a run on slicks.

it'll run 10's again quite easily i reakon. Seat of pants tells me it should do it with ease.

Forgot about thread here, so small update.

Did the private drag day organised on here a few months back, had some troubles with the battery but once i replaced it and using some very worn out old 17" MT Et's the ute ran a best of 11.434@124mph. best mp for the day was 126.93.

about a month ago on an outing to barb's the gearbox seems to have broken the 3-4 shift selector and thus was stuck in 4th gear. I contined to race it for the rest of the day and did a 1.09 for the long track. (stuck in 4th)

I have no idea if thats quick or not but it was 2 seconds quicker than the 2nd fastest car on the day and i'm definetly nothing special when it comes to driving, bulk hp probably helps me here. lol

I have a screen grab from one of the logs i took from the day, which shows me touching 228kph on the final straight before braking.
http://www.vyssute.com/downloads/track-log.PNG

Coz of the gearbox problem, it's been sitting in the backyard/shed till i got around to removing the engine & gearbox on the weekend.

I've removed the engine, as it had a small oil leak from the timing cover and i've decided to put a bigger cam & some ARP head studs through it that i've had sitting on the shelf.

In a few months I may even put a bigger 2.3lt blower on it.

I'll get some pics up of when i go to change the cam & studs.

been a while since an update. mainly because i have been getting my drag car up and running, so funds were diverted for a while.

Also had to wait for gearbox parts to arrive from the USA before i could get it rebuilt.

Anyway, main point of updates.

Gearbox fixed and strengthened with supposably "650hp" rated parts. bare in mind the car's had close to this for a long time in various guises with the oem parts.

I also put on a new new aussie billet shifter in place of the old B&M one i had.

Bigger camshaft installed. cant give out actual specs but it's close to mid 230's on the intake and high 250's on the exhaust @ 50 thou. with lift in 600's. so new double valve springs were installed in place of the singles.

still running with stock heads/studs though. :(

new hpc coated 1 7/8 primary and 3.5" exit pacemakers, i actually baught these for my drag car but they wouldnt fit due to the heads in use.

also put on a 2 step controller unit. 1 for max rpm and the 2nd for when the clutch is pressed. normal ls1 uses a fuel cut, this works by cutting timing. instead.

and last but not least..... a nice big HTV2300 harrop sitting on top. (for you 4 banger boys, that means it can move 2.3Lt's of air for every rotation)

got engine back in couple of weeks ago, electronic convertor box then decided to shit itself after i got back from qld, so decided that instead of buying another one and seeing as i would need to remove crank to change over reluctor wheel.

That i might as well put a stroker kit in. so now im just waiting on pistons to become available in the usa then rotating assembly will get sent out, then i can send block off to get bored, torque plate honed etc.

not going big cubes with this one, just a slightly larger stroke/bore as i want this sucker to rev to 7500 safely.

so more waiting.

engine parts were selected to run upto 15psi of boost. essentially maxing the blower out.

Thread revival. dropped off engine block & parts for assembly today to John @ Street Quick

There's a been a few changes since the original build. mainly around camshaft size and cyclinder heads. still going with mast heads but gone the bigger big bore heads as im using a 4.125 piston.

Also decided to go twin turbo instead of a blower as the ve has the blower now, thinking atleast some gt35's or gtx35's on some custom manifolds Josh @ Metalcraft is going to make for me....

I havent decided whethor to go air to air or water/air intercooling yet. Once the engine is in and manifold's are being fabricated we will see what sort of space we have to accomodate either selection.

Couple of pics of what condition the ute is in after nearly 2 years of being off the road. the closest the car has had to a wash is when it was left out in the rain.

single's are shit on a v8... that's what we run in dads' drag car.
low boost/low timing thanks to piping that was only meant for a 5.7lt

my thought process behind all this is, if i sell the 402 in my drag car to my brother up north, i'll then build a stockish motor and run similar manifold/turbo kit so i can fuck off the vortech blower on the 402.

I may be thinking of another car, but did you ever run this at the Newman outback drags?

I think I recall seeing it and speaking to the owner (presumably you) whilst he was playing with some setting in the tune in the line up @ WAW one night

either way fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuu Spiders!

yeah. vortech's suck balls when the pulleys dont line up 100%.

i did well though. it didnt throw the belt till the last round and i still rolled to the finish for the win. haha

edit. found the vid's from that year.

I had a pretty scary ride in my final, the car shifted second right on the start of the painted section of run way, got extremely loose and I'm sure I was looking at the guy running next to me through ny windscreen!

Big singles are fine, running piping that isn't matched to turbo/engine size is not. There are plenty of big single combo's floating around that make huge numbers on the dyno & run the times at the strip, as there is for twins as well...

T1000 kits are aids which is probably why you have been turnbed off the idea. I'd be running a big single turbs over a blower any day of the week though :D

oh for sure. i had a single turbo kit before the t1000, same size turbo but the manifold was made of steam pipe and had a decent cross-over. that thing come on boost hard and quick (relativily) but i swapped it for a smaller t3 flange kit as at the time i didnt need the big one any more.

ended up getting jipped in that deal.... karma came around and killed the guy less than 6 months later though..

plans are to get rid of the kit on dad's car but use the turbo at the rear with it's own oil system and run a normal headers / exhaust to it..

Just have a decent mani & cooler pipe kit made for the current kit. No point re-inventing the wheel if he's just out to have some fun...
Also, only LSX based car that i've seen over here with a similar setup to what you're speaking of is that orange VZ Maloo ute with the turbo in the tray. Fails pretty hard for a stroker motor + turbo in a stripped out & tubbed car with 9" rear imo.

Never said slow, just said it fails for what it is. 154mph for a 408 with GT55 turbs isn't anything special in a purpose built car... 9.0 is also a one off run, it's never consistently running those numbers.

Ute is now back in the shed awaiting installation of the new engine. I shit you not, this car has not been cleaned in 2 years! just hosed down.

in typical fashion i decided to do more work on other stuff before actually putting the motor in, so ended up removing the engine harness to clean up and extend the map & cam sensor wiring (instead of using extension adapters) also degreased away some the oil and shit in the engine bay.

Engine harness is on the dining room table, pretty much finished. I just need to clarify some wiring so i can integrate the boost controller wiring direct from the harness.

A while ago i had the drivers side of the engine bay repainted and im in 2 minds about getting the passanger side done as it does look a bit shitty compared to drivers side. (any painters out there able to fit it in while im away at work message me)

engine wise, i put in the crank sensor, engine, alternator & aircon brackets/mounts, water pump & twin plate clutch are also on before it goes back in. Tomorrow I'll put the gearbox onto the engine ready for installation back in the engine bay.

Clutch has got a bit of rust on it, from sitting in the shed. :p

Plan is still to go with twin gtx35's, low or high mounted decision hasn't been made yet.
