View Full Version : Exhaust popping and farting more than usual

Over the past 6 months or so, I've noticed an increase in the popping and farting from the exhaust upon backoff. The noise doesn't really concern me however I'm wondering if it's a precursor to something being wrong with the engine or tune.
A few facts about the car:
- Engine is a 2.2L H22A with intake, throttle body, intake manifold, exhaust etc all aftermarket.
- The car was tuned by Hyperdrive about a year ago and the tune hasn't been changed since.
- The exhaust is a Remus and has no cracked welds or deformations that I can see.
- The plugs are fresh and the car is always run on BP 98.
- I haven't made any engine mods within the past 6 months.
I suspect that it might be tune related as the tune has always been pretty rich (AFR ~12.2 from 2800-4800RPM, which is where it pops the most) however I don't know why it would have gotten any worse as of late.
Any thoughts or comments are welcome.
Most "popping" is excess fuel vapour being dumped into the exhaust and being ignited.
The packing in the mufflers will also burn off over time, the "popping" was probably always but has been muffled, now there is carbon build up and some of the packing has burnt away your noticing it more.
If your worried, get it on a dyno and check afrs.
I wouldnt worry.
Ash, could be a dodgy sensor somewhere.. tunes dont change, and if everything else is constant, you need to look at things that could be going wrong. Sensor's would be a good place to start... maybe an o2 sensor or air flow meter?

yep, happens when the car is running too rich, you back off and fuel burns in the exhaust.
Muffler wearing out can also expedite it. The above richness and burning fuel burns out the muffler making the problem worse.
Still dont know why its tuned so rich still.

My car was doing exactly this the other day. Though today i just used some electric contact cleaner in the AFM and a quick change of the spark plugs and it ran smooth again.
Is most likely a sensor issue but if it's dumping more fuel then needed

I was told that any further leaning out was causing the ECU to retard ignition and the engine to lose power. Without going for a standalone ECU there was supposedly no way to get the tune any leaner
The tune is as rich as 11.8 across much of the top end but roller coasters all over the show. I think I might call All Star and see what they can do because I've always felt that the current tune is far from ideal.

if thats true, hondata :D
if not, retune should get you more power and better fuel economy.

I have a H22A in my Accord and I have had this same problem ever since the swap was done. Engine is stock, everything else stock. Running a stock P13 ECU, but I don't think it should be running *that* rich on the stock ECU.
Where abouts are you? Wouldn't mind meeting up as I'm not too sure how my H is performing because I don't know anyone else with one.
