few computer gurus here need something lightweight and not to cumbersome, but able to function pretty well as it will be used for work ect, have one of those cheaper HP ones currently with XP light on it and its not the fastest thing around so something a little better than that?

not an apple fan either...

I love my Asus Eee PC 900HA
win xp
320gb HD
1 Gig ram
Intel Atom Processor

Its small, light and tough as shit, I have dropped it a few times and all good, takes a while getting used to smaller screen/keyboard. But I havent used my desktop in 6 months since getting it, great for watching movies on plane and shit.Plus small enoughto lug around and not needing a massive bag for it.

Dude, most rigs only have limited internet so you're either going to use it for watching tv/movies in your bunk or paying a shitload to get something portable that can play games reasonably.
Being a third party, you're not going to have access to the employee wifi, so be prepared to get fuck all while you're out there.

I'd worry less about your laptop and more about getting decent bags to carry your gear - remember 10Kg max per bag and PPE/coveralls weigh more than you think.

Yeah if you need one, S. should be supplying a laptop, but that's a work lappy which usually stays in the TP shack (and usually huuuuge).

Just get a cheap netbook with a 320/500GB 2.5in external.

I like my Dell. Not the smallest and lightest ever, but brilliant in terms of speed, usability and battery life (about 5 hours with a 9 cell).

great for watching movies on plane and shit
All you need now is a decent mate who will return your HDD.

I have a lenovo S10. great little laptop. Has been dropped many times and still keeps on ticking. Get aprox 6 hours out of a charge and 12v car chargers are only $20ish on fleabay so if your travelling for a day they are easy to keep charged.

Mine copped a virus while i was away once and the self restore software worked a treat and got me up and porning again:werd:

Dell 13" - Enough said.

Stay away from mini-notebooks. Too small to be practical (try surfing pron/nets on a 10" screen, boo!)

+1 Dell 13".. Inspiron 13z with 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD and 3 year on site warranty service for around $1300. With a decent warranty you can't go wrong. Has webcam too..

bingo, and being at the bottom on the rungs, they are gonna get fuck all net.
limited phone usuage (only the 3rd party room phones, and often they are being used all the time for work related calls)
and the fact you guys are Scomi, its not like you are Haliburton or Weatherford who usually have "footholds" in the 3rd party room, you guys will be lucky to get net at all to be honest

remember highly likely that your mobiles will be taken off you on the rig .. as they are not allowed ... so yeh, i think you guys are going to be in for a BIG shock

oh i forgot to mention

you will be sharing tiny rooms with 3 other guys, and the bathroom (tiny) is shared by another room, so 8 ppl sharing 1 bathroom.

gets busy at times.

oh and good chance you fuckers will struggle to sleep with all the constant bangs and noises throughout the night and such haha

have fun :)

your clothes and ppe will get to about 10-10.5 and your hand carry bag (laptopetc) will be about 6.5 kgs.... i had normal size dv4 with 15.1 monitor for 2 years offshore and just bought a dv2 with 12.1 screen and my bag is now like 4.9kgs with about 4 mag, cables, remote hd etc.... you will be fine.... look for more durability as kunts throwing your bag around etc... make sure your bags padded as getting laptop replaced/repaired is a prick...

p.s who you going to work for?
