I put in a application to the safety branch and they sent a letter saying i need engineers certificate and emissions test and then take it over the pits.
I thought this was bullshit so i did some research and found this.

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engines_3Feb2006.pdf
page 11 4.1 saying that i dont need a certificate.
Does this mean i dont have to go over the pits or do i still need to go over the pits?

By the way went from a 3sge to a 3sgte in a mr2 if that helps.

As far as I know this is what I've been told if the engine swap has the same engine size (ie. 4cyl 2000cc to 4cyl 2000cc) then it's fine. Pretty sure if your car comes out with that motor they don't care. Just need to fill out an engine number change form and send it in.

the first paragraph is the key, basically says that the local juristiction has the final say.
You have a letter in writing from the local juristiction telling you what is required, so to do it to the letter of the law you follow their guidance.

Dont think the SW20 ever came turbocharged over here, so its technically not an optional engine (vs say a camry 4cyl upgrade to 6 cyl).

You'll probably get away with just changing the engine number, but you will have to be fraudelent on the RAC horsepower statement that you sign.

If it goes over the pits later, they'll likely pick you up on it too, could be a world of hurt.

But turbo sw20 are available for import, therefore the turbo sw20 donk is not unknown (local emissions data already exists) and shouldn't need an emissions test

i think it could be because his mr2 is ADM

Fairly sure the car in question originally is a NA import. (if that has anything to do with it)

I think its bullshit they make you jump through so many hoops to try and do the right thing and change the engine number.
The guy said if the 3sgte engine comes out standard in mr2's in australia then he doesnt need it and he will change it.
All i want to do is sell it and make sure it good for next owner and they make it so difficult.

it still sounds really dodgy - all those guys running registered 1jz cressys - dont think they had to suffice to do the emissions test.
at least the AUDM market had the 3sgte with the celica gt4.....right (pretty sure some were sold here?)?

yes the celica was ADM, not really applicable to an MR2 though

yeah i thought about this issue earlier today (i used to have a 1jzgte adm cressie) & the only thing i can think of is it came out a 3.0l & it became a 2.5lturbo, so thats propbably why they are ok?

well emissions testing (IM240) is a pretty recent introduction so thats to be expected i guess

what HP did you write down on the change of engine number form out of interest?
Love to know if they actually care, haha.

I got it changed today without getting any emissions test done.
Just had to get it over the pits because i could prove that 3sgte's come out in Australia so they let me pass that

thats a happy ending isnt it. It goes to show that they can see logic after all you just have to be persistent. Well done
