We give Windows 7 free to all our students at uni. Its part of a scheme called MSDNAA where Microsoft gives free shit so that people get hooked on it at an early age.
For people who aren't in this program there is a student edition which is for sale and most tafes/colleges/unis will be able to provide this to students directly if you ask the IT helpdesk guys. It differs from the retail product in that it has no box or packing and is just a plain CD and serial number, but it is 100% proper license from Microsoft.

use your skin colour ... it helped you get into school too ... might help you get it cheaper.

I was told it is best not to upgrade but do a clean install of Windows 7 so it doesn't use any of the existing Vista files.
Either way, small computer shops or places like Arrow/Austin Computers will sell you the OEM product cheaper then places like Harvey Norman.

"It's Not Cheating" Programme: http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/itsnotcheating/default.aspx
Got mine through there for $64. $50 for just a product key and an extra $14 if you want a disc sent to you.
Basically you use your student email address, they verify it then send you an email with a link.

What happens if you are at TAFE and don't have an email address?

If you don't have an email address, you can verify your student-ness using your student ID card or other means:
