View Full Version : Erratic power delivery.

Just recently started to notice my car when under load will have a 'surge' of power. I akin it to something like a clutch slipping, ie 2000rpm, foot flat, revs will surge slightly and then power will kick in, however at higher rpm, 3500/4000 when I do it will be natural and linear. My boost gauge reads normal boost delivery (as far as I can tell) however I do have an issue with it dropping in boost at high rpm (5000-6000)

My guess is that Wastegate is or BOV is fucked, any other diagnosis?

I beleive a FMIC and high mount will solve the issue.

the jzx's have an electronic controlled bov and the solinoid opens up as your coming onto boost stopping boosting then closes and boosts... its gay and a ecu controlled thing.... ditch the std bov or do the mod with putting in the extra nipple *hehe*

Blitz cooler core is currently in the garage, waiting for a set of pipes to pop up.

You'll have to show me this mate, that or I can get hold of R2D2 bov I bought my mate for his car...which he then binned

Unplugged BOV, issue still seems to be here, so don't think it's to do with that.

I was away for 7 weeks and left my car at a mates, I trust he didn't do anything bad do it but the battery died and I spent a few days having to jump start/hill start it to get around, I know the ECU was reset numerous times in that period, which is when I first noticed this issue. I just reset the ECU and nothing seems to of changed.

Could it be the clutch showing it's first signs of being on the way out? Ie whenever maximum torque is being applied it's slipping?

Too much limiter bashing burnout could be the culprit lol. And im no pro mechanic but sounds like your clutch could be slipping to me. Try driving along at like 60 in 4th then clutch in rev it right up and dump the clutch. If it doesnt slip then this isnt your problem.

What?
Most clutches would slip after a test like that... Fucked or not!

I've always just heel-toe'd, holding the car on brakes while giving it some gas and slowly feeding the clutch out to tell if it's slipping. If the car starts shuddering and looks like stalling then it's less likely to be your clutch. If it is slipping you should be able to feel it and see the revs stay up as you feed the clutch out.

I've been doing a bit of research, fairly sure it's the clutch. Ahhh gay, minimum 1k replacement :(

That said, shouldn't I be able to smell a faint waft of the clutch when it slips?

Third gear in a straight line, in power band, apply break and accelerator at same time, if it slips undeer that then shes foo bared.

This happened to me and about a month later i had to get a new clutch. Basically as soon as boost kicked in the revs would go up but the speed would stay the same. I done those tests eg. fifth gear let the clutch out and see if it stalled. It did stall but that was because the clutch wasn't worn out enough to slip without boost.

I dont mean like limiter it just rev it up a bit. I would of thought that would be a good tell but maybe not lol.
