ok guys,

My mate and I are planning on doing the vietnam/cambodia/thailand trip, working our way through the borders as we go. (have a really good contact in cambodia if anyone is planning on going there)

Now we plan to stay about a week in each but not really sure when we want to go back. (no set return date) Here could be our problem.

couple of questions as we are getting told different things

1) can we just buy a 1way to vietnam

2) if not, will a return date leaving from thailand be suffice?

3) Also we are not really sure if we will leave from bangkok or puhket, so is there such a thing as a return ticket from general thailand which would cover both/all airports just so they know we are leaving from vietnam (doubtful)?

One agency told us it cant/wont work just purchasing a 1way to vietnam as they wont let you in the country without having a return...

We really dont want have to do any backtracking and waste time on our holiday in taxis/buses.

thoughts?

Yes you can book one way to Vietnam with an airline, On entering the country some places (like the UK) want an exit date but most countries are fine with people backpacking/border hopping.

Singapore airlines are fkn cheap to Ho Chi Mihn (Sub $800 one way)..

I would call the Vietnamese embassy (02 6286 6059) and check with them, they will let you know if you need a visa and any other requirments.

You do need a visa and entry and exit dates.

Get a changeable two way ticket, so you book, then have it so you can change your flights for no extra charge, Bit pricier but can be done

If you don't have a return ticket some countries won't let you in... regardless if you have a return date in mind. Thats the case when people come to Aust i'm pretty sure so could well be the case for Vietnam.
I'd do what Tyson suggested to be safe

Not sure about this. As everything in Thailand, nothing is black and white, which is why you're getting different answers.

I've had to do numerous border runs into Cambodia and Laos and back into Thailand, and I've never been asked to show my return air ticket. I'm always there on a 12 month visa and the thai border police sometimes ask a lot of questions (what am I doing in thailand, where am I staying, where my gym is etc), but in 12 months of border crossing I've never been asked to show any return ticket. I would suspect it will depend on what type of visa you're going there on (I'm guessing a tourist visa), so to point you in the right direction, try researching your specific visa more.

I think you'll be ok going to Vietnam and Cambodia, but you're more likely to get hassle going into Thailand, especially if the immigration officer is having a bad day/you look like you might have money/you don't have boobs. Worse case is you'll be refused entry, you'll have to find a net cafe and book your ticket online and print the intinery before you try to enter the country.

A lot of government officals/police over there can't read english anyway so I don't see the point of them asking to see your return ticket. I passed off my australian drivers licence as an international one when I got stopped at a road block in Nakhon Rattischima and I could tell from the blank look on the cops face he had no idea what he was looking at.

If you want a more definate answer I'd try asking the question on the forum at thaivisa.com or somewhere more appropriate.

Some of the airlines get shitty if you don't have a return ticket and will refuse you entry to the plane, but I seriously doubt you'd have any problem at the border.

As for your last question, as far as I'm aware you will have to buy a ticket either deparding from Suvarnabhumi or Phuket airport, as flights from BKK --> Phuket are often done via Bangkok air or some other domestic airline.

Also be aware when you enter Thailand from any bordering countries by land they only issue a 2 week tourist visa, via the airports they still issue the 28 day tourist visa. They changed to this recently to weed out illegal workers who just cross into a neighboring country once a month to renew their visa.

also be aware for boys in thailand.

so if an exit date is needed will one from thailand be ok?....

we dont want to be stuck somewhere, and then having to book a ticket just for the sake of getting in which could cost us a stupid amount.

1) i thought u didnt a visa in thailand unless staying over a month

2) i have done border runs from thailand to cambodia myself and havent had a problem either.

3) its more the fact of us being let on the plane and into vietnam just on a
1way ticket.
