View Full Version : Upgrading high school maths & physics

Ladies & Gents,
I need to find a course somewhere that will allow me to have my school leaving WACE/Summary of results upgraded to show Applicable Mathematics & Physics as my maths/science subjects respectively. This is so I can possibly pursue a career that requires these levels of competence in 2011 - as in senior school I never took a TEE Science subject & only did the lower TEE maths which was Foundations/Discrete in year 11/12 respectively.
I need to be able to undertake this mostly via correspondence as I often work away, at little notice, and generally work 99.99% of the business day anyway..
Will there be someone who offers such a custom course and will be able to co-ordinate it via correspondence? Is TAFE responsible for these types of things? If not, who are the best people to talk too?
Can anyone share experience of something like this or similar they have undertaken in the past?
Thanks in advance for any advice :)
Kael.

Canning College, not sure if you can do it via correspondence though.

TAFE or any of the senior secondary campuses

Cheers boys, but how will I go with taking only two subjects opposed to a grade's worth, I've known TAFE & CC to be a haven for adults repeating secondary school? What I need to do is akin to the pick & mix chocolates at your local video store..
Also since Applicable Maths & Physics lead on from Introductory Calculus & Physics in year 11, would I need to take the year 11 subjects as well?

As part of my engineering degree, I had to do several extra units of Physics above a high school level. If you haven't done the math that precedes the physics, they likely won't allow you to do it. If they do, it'd make life a lot harder.
If you are a mature age student, some universities will allow you take a unit which gives you an equivalent of a highs school pass in the subject. Many will also allow you to sit the unit externally which means you need only submit assignments and show up for the final exam, rather than attend all the lab sessions and lectures.

Firstly, ring the guidance people relating to the course you are ultimately trying to get into. I'm assuming it's a uni course? Phone them and ask them exactly what you need to do to get in. No point doing more than what you have to do.
Also asking advice for education on forums can be confusing at best. The WA high school system has changed a few times over the past 5 years, so what might have been applicable to some people may not apply to you. It is best to call or visit the prospective student centre of whatever institution you are thinking of going to in order to get the most accurate information.

^ What everyone said up there, they may direct you to a correspondense thing like SIDE (School of Isolated and Distance Education) which I had to do to complete my year 11 and 12 TEE History as there wasnt enough students in my year at highschool to actually fill a class.
Basically a self learn course and phone up once a week to check in, pretty neat but requires a bit of discipline cause no ones watching your back to make sure you're doing your work.

Thanks for the advice lads, after some leg work this afternoon and yarns with TAFE, CC, Cyril Jackson, Tuart & of course DFR, it looks like Cyril Jackson will be able to meet my needs offering the relevant courses online.
Here's hoping studying/passing 4 TEE units of Maths/Physics between everything else without instruction isn't as impossible as it seems! Again if this is a road already travelled for some give me some further advice by all means!
Stupid education!!
Cheers :)
