Can be a painful exercise depending on type of vehicle, try taking apart steering column shroud and removing ignition lock from the steering column ( usually two bolts or hex security keys) and asorted wiring, then depending whether or not you can get access to the remaining part of the key, you may have to disassemble the lock itself carefully not to lose any of the tumblers, springs etc they normally have one or two tiny holes on the lock that you have to press in to remove lock cylinder, check vehicle repair manual if your unsure how to take car apart, I did mine in a z20 soarer cost nothing but time and managed to het a new key cut from the broken pieces.

Also you could try a huge ass magnet and jewellers screwdrivers and wire to tease the bloody thing out, this usually falls on it's ass though.

Failing trying it yourself you could always call a locksmith or R.A.C roadside assist, but that is cash money and not many of us have any of the green.

What type of car?
Really depends on the type of car, but if the key can still be turned then it shouldn't be too bad.

Fark that, push the car onto its side and tap the barrel till gravity pulls the key out.

Would a large high density magnet not pull it out? Like off a set of speakers or something?

happened to me in my old supra, just went down to a lock smith in wannaroo and he got it out and cut me a new one for $50 i think it was, it took him all afternoon about 3-4 hours to just remove the key because it was stuck in the barrel pretty deap
