Has anyone else had one explode randomly for no reason?

Get home this morning, sit down in the lounge for a slack day of PS3 when I hear a massive bang and shit in the other room, walk into the dining room and theres our glass top dining table in a million or so bits.
Nothing but a few place mats and coasters and small candle holder were on it, it was around 12mm thick easily so I could have stood on it really.

Did a quick search and found out its really common with china spec glass, which after checking the remaining bits of table its imported from china.

Yay for Harvey Norman you pile of shit rip off merchant, its out of its warranty period so looks like house insurance will have to pay for it, but yeah just watch out hey.

Its pretty common.

Happens due to expansion due to heat, some that are a tight fit in the frame will shatter.

I have had a glass door shatter right near me before, was like a bomb going off. Was in a new dental clinic in Darwin, 40 degree day with the sun lying on the glass. I needed a new set of jocks after that.

it still should be under warrenty due to the fact that glass should not break like that and its meant to last more than a few years i would contact consumer affairs in regard to this cause is another type of warrenty from memory some clause that most people dont know about

This was on aca/tt a couple of months ago.
The woman it happened to complained and got a new one even out of warranty.
Ring up and say your children now have a face full of glass and see if they will replace it.

Call the HN store you got it from on Tuesday, Ask to talk to the Furniture Franchisee. Have your invoice number handy so he can look it up. Explain what happened, don't be a pingpingpingping about it. Explain you have photos of the damage and that you would like to email them to him so he can go to the importer.

Franchisee's are usually pretty good with things like this and the importer should come to the party with a solution.

very common issue, however I thought it was just the outdoor table settings that exploded!

Sue them for the cost of the table, a set of jocks, and 3 million dollars for psychological damage due to the noise it made.

It's to do with how the glass is not tempered properly and there are air bubbles in it from smelting (not sure what gas it is), when it gets hot, the bubbles expand and it goes bang. Another example of China FTL.

Follow this link:

http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/ConsumerProtection/Content/Shopping/Complaints/Consumer_Complaint_Checklist.html

Talk to the trader and ask to have the table replaced.
If they fail to act, ask them in writing.
Failing that, make a formal complaint (http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/ConsumerProtection/PDF/Forms/Consumer_Complaint.pdf).

Don't bother with the formal complaint if you haven't first approached the trader verbally and in writing.

We had an outdoor glass table replaced using this method. The trader wasn't very helpful until the formal government consumer protection papers turned up. Had the Managing Director on the phone within days of lodging the complaint and had a new table delivered the next day.

brett i think someone is after you and has made a failed assasination attempt on your life and missed striking the table! id assume they were a good distance away as you didnt hear any muzzle report of there firearm! that or it was suppressed either way sounds like pros! i really think you need to go to the police!

Common thing for glass tables that are manufactured for commercial quantity, and to be honest, most if not ALL Harvey Norman furniture is from China. A lot of their bed sets with the leather trimming are packed with hay which gets mouldy and causes white stains on the leather, so double check anything you buy, quite often the leather has to be replaced, which based on what is available from China, can often come in a different colour, thus not suiting the rest of the set.
