Good pick theres a couple for sale around the place...
Look for a recently rebuilt engine... other than that it all depends what it has done to it.. same as any other car
Dont let unreliability mislead you they last for ages if well looked after..
Mine for eg has 10k of limiter bashing and still going strong.. :)

Also, www.ausrotary.com is loaded with info if you can be arsed sifting through.
My advice would be get a Nissan instead.......
Nah in all seriousness, a few tips; try to go S5 as S4's have hideous interiors and almost always a fucked rusted out sun-roof. And as said before try and get one that's been rebuilt recently.
Also, if it matters to you, Aus delivered cars are cheaper on insurance. But imports have waaaay better lookin' tail lights, a higher diff ratio (4.1 rather than 3.9) and are generally in better condition.
^the jap lights the round ones i assume? yeh look much better.
just out of interest would you rekon s5's are more common with a sunroof or without? not a fan of those things.
gunna get me one of these after i move house.
cheers
Wouldn't bother with a s4 man.. not the best looking inside or out haha.
As stated before, if you maintain the car well, it'll last ya.
i didnt realise they were much different tbh

Between S4/5 The front bumper looks a little different. The side moldings are colored on an s5, s4 is all black. The most noticeable thing is the round tail lights on an s5 but some people switch them. check the year of the car to tell what year it is, Interior S5's have black which is hot, you will see S4's come with red / grey / blue the only color i hate is Red. The Gauges inside the cluster are different Round vs "Pie Slice" Shaped
some other differences are that the S5 oil metering pump controlled by the ecu, dual TPS, higher compression... Just to note sometimes S5 OMP's Fail but i have never heard of the mech OMP of the S4 failing.
there is more but i forget sorry
^^^
That pretty much sums it up between the 2. I still would go with the series 5 as there is no need to stuff around and make it more appealing but if u dig the look of the series 4 then go for it. There is the mechanical side of both to consider also.
Btw is there much of a price difference between the two?

not really.. i like the S4 look, everyone goes for the s5 look, i personally only dislike cars with red interior , black, grey, blue, brown all AOK but it comes down to preference. best bet is to look at all Fc's in your price range and pick the one you like the most.... because really once your looking for big HP the mods you have to do and the money you have to fork out is the same,

anytime you buy a rotor, get a compression test from a rotary mechanic. I dunno if the regular mazda service centres do it properly.

S5's have initial D spec dash, can feel like ryosuke n shit.
but seriously, check compression and cooling system, rotors hate the warmth, its an old car so look for anything else that may come as a big problem down the track :)
thanks for the info people.

just to clarify so all s5's (adm/jdm) have the round taillights as standard?
thanks

yes all S5 have round taillights jdm/adm just different sizes.... but swapping them is not that hard

As far as i know, Jap s5's didn't have a sunroof option (car above is American), where as Aus did. So once again, import would be the way to go.
i see, thanks for the pics & info.

If ya plan on getting an FC, just be prepared to not be on a tight budget.
Dont buy cheap parts and service the thing om a regular basis. Treat them well and dont buy a shitter and it should last you.
But would definatly recommend spending that bit extra and getting one with a recent rebuild (by a workshop not a barkyard job as most have)
